Miscellaneous handouts, flyers, and bulletins—Box 13 Scope and Contents MorningStar Ministries was founded by Rick Joyner and his wife Julie and 1985. The ministry is currently a center for the River church movement. The ministry is located on the old Heritage USA property built by Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker.The collection consists of books, CDs/DVDs, bulletins, flyers, conference information, and other handouts collected from MorningStar in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Many of the materials in the collection were published by MorningStar pastors or staff, and the collection includes other books and materials by frequent guest speakers. MorningStar holds as many as a dozen conferences a year, and conference sets as well as teaching series are included in the collection, in addition to informational handouts, conference flyers, and bulletins from the church. MorningStar’s periodicals, including the Morning Star Prophetic Bulletin, the Morning Star Journal, MorningStar Partners, and MorningStar Strategic Team, are catalogued in the Archived Periodicals of the David Allan Hubbard Library. If the movement had the fullness of the Holy Spirit unction and power that it claims, we would not see such an exhibition of the flesh, but in fact moral and other scandals have continued to plague it in recent history. The following are some prominent examples: In 1977 ORAL ROBERTS claimed that God had appeared to him and instructed him to build a medical center called the CITY OF FAITH. In 1980 he claimed that he had a ³face to face´ conversation with a 900-foot-tall Jesus who told him that he was going to solve the City of Faith financial problems. Seven years later, Roberts said that God had appeared to him yet again and told him that he would die if he did not raise $8 million within 12 months. The wild-eyed visions and unrelenting appeals could not save the City of Faith. In 1989 Roberts closed it to pay off debts! Yet the Pentecostal world in general did not decry Roberts as a false prophet and a religious phony. Thousands continued to flock to ORU from Pentecostal churches across the country, and millions of dollars continued to flow into Roberts¶ ministry from gullible supporters. In 1989 JIM BAKKER, head of the very influential Pentecostal PTL television program went to prison for defrauding his followers out of $158 million.

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract Studies of religion and fandom have generally considered sincere devotion a fundamental point of contact between the two cultural phenomena, an assumption not reflected in fan studies proper. This dissertation aims to expand the scope of research on religion and fandom by offering cultural histories of “unfaithful” fan followings of three controversial American televangelists – Robert Tilton, Tammy Faye Bakker/Messner, and Jim Bakker – dating from the 1980s to 2012, and consisting of individuals amused by, rather than religiously affiliated with, their chosen television preachers. It is argued that through their ironic, parodic, and satirical play with celebrity preachers widely believed to be religious fakes, these unfaithful fans have engaged in religious work related to personal and public negotiations of authentic Christianity. Additionally, it is demonstrated that through their activities, and in particular through their media practices, these fans have impacted the brands and mainstream representations of certain televangelists, and have provoked ministry responses including dismissal, accommodation, and counteraction. iii Acknowledgements Family comes first. MorningStar does not publish detailed accounts of its history and therefore a complete picture is difficult to piece together based on the available information. Rick Joyner states that he was converted to Jesus Christ in 1971.1 He indicates that he immediately began to have prophetic experiences in which he could foresee events and occasionally look at people and know details about them such as spiritual problems or callings on their lives.2 He was “thrust into the ministry” very quickly after being a believer for only two years and began to pastor a church.3 Joyner indicates that he failed badly in this attempt and left the pastoral ministry in 1980.

Much of this growth has been concentrated in a few very large megachurches (defined by scholars as churches with 2000 or more weekly attendees in one location) and new denominations formed as smaller churches became affiliated with them. Globally, the megachurch phenomenon is not exclusive to Pentecostalism. However, in Australia, almost all megachurch developments are Pentecostal, or charismatic and neo-Pentecostal offshoots. This dissertation examines the early life course biography of one of the first Australian megachurches, the Christian Outreach Centre (COC). It reviews events leading up to the founding of the COC in 1974 under a charismatic leader, and its growth and transition over its first 30 years and its development into a national and international denomination.
