The Citizens Post from the boardroom

Good Evening,

Welcome to the Simplyhealth City Ground for tonight’s Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round fixture between Winchester City and AFC Stoneham. We would like to welcome all players, staff, committee and supporters that have made the short journey up to Winchester this evening and we hope you have an enjoyable visit and a safe journey.

We come into this cup tie on the back of a hard-fought victory over our local rivals, AFC Totton, in the League on Tuesday. The lads showed a real fighting spirit and resilience to score a late winner having been pegged back by Totton. Simba Mlambo is having a prolific start to the campaign with four goals in his opening two games.

The FA Cup is an important competition for us as a football club as well as for all Non-League clubs. The financial rewards from winning in this competition are immense as well as the prestige of being successful in this world-famous competition.

We had a well-deserved cup run last season that resulted in a special day out for the club, away at Torquay United, and we are very much hoping to emulate that again this season.

On to matchday programme number two now – I hope you enjoy both the read and also tonight’s game!

Thank-you for your support on Tuesday night, that was our fourth successive fixture with a gate of over 200, our target figure, so thank-you and please do come back and visit us soon! Up The Citizens

The Citizens Post DAVOs diary

Good evening and a warm welcome to everyone for tonight’s FA Cup match against AFC Stoneham, I wish their staff, players and supporters a pleasant evening and safe trip home afterwards.

We are certainly anticipating a tough match against a good side, a side that beat us in a Soton Snr cup match last season, they have also started very brightly in the Wessex Prem after promotion last season. It’s fair to say last seasons FA cup was a fairytale for us equaling the record for the club at the 4th qualifying stage, an amaz- ing trip to Torquay where we far from disgraced ourselves, I don’t forget though that run started with an absolutely horribly difficult game against Bournemouth Poppies that we scraped through, so we know these games are very tricky! We will need to be mentally at it, match them for effort and if we do that our quality will shine through but you get nothing at all without the basics of hard work and effort, so we will be making sure we try and do that, we are under no illusions how difficult a game it will be though.

So we have now had 2 league games, a great away point at Bristol Manor Farm was backed up with a brilliant 3 points against local rivals AFC Totton, we said after Saturday it will only be a good point if we back it up with 3 at home and so in the end it’s a very pleasing first week of the season. I don’t think there is any doubting that it was a very richly deserved result, we could and should have been out of sight by half time, instead we were only 1 up through Simba, as is often the case if you do not make a team pay it can bite you on the backside and they levelled up, we came again though and despite more missed opportunities we got the winner with Sim scoring his 4th of the season! Excellent result for us.

On the player front we are not really going to be at full throttle until September as unfortunately we have a fair bit of unavailability until then for various reasons out of our control, injury wise we welcomed back Olly Balmer on Tuesday from injury and only George Short is missing currently through injury. We are always looking to evolve the squad where possible, however as always we do kit have a revolving door policy and so it’s not something that we do unless we know the player and the character is right, the lads we have brought in have been first class all of them, I hope you all get to know them better and will agree with me!

Enjoy tonight’s game and shout as loud as you can for us, we need that support as always! Let’s hope for a positive night!

Up the citizens!

Todays Visitors AFC STONEHAM

The Club was founded in 1919 as the Royal Engineers (Ordnance Survey Office) FC by soldiers returning from the First World War. However there is a record of matches being played by Ordnance Survey Royal Engineers against The Gentlemen of Tenby in 1888.

The Club joined the Southampton Junior League in 1919. They won the Junior ‘B’ in 1920/21 and were admitted to the League Divisional Section which was a Junior League with no automatic right for promotion. They were runners-up to Cowes in their first season, but no promotion.

The Divisional Section was split into East & West section the following year and the club finished mid-table in the East Division. Around that time the club began a long association with the Civil Service Ground. Nicknamed ‘The Mapmakers’ it’s believed they merged with the Post Office Team when they moved to the Civil Service Ground and formed a new club, Southampton Civil Service in 1923/24 and finished fourth in the West Division.

The Royal Engineers (OSO) split from the Civil Service side the following year but the Engineers certainly found their bearings in the West Division in 1924/25 by finishing runners-up, a point behind Totton. Again there was no automatic entry to the Hampshire County Division to the frustration of both clubs. The Royal Engineers (OSO) and Southampton Civil Service continued to use the Civil Service Ground and developed a rivalry in the Western Division with the ascendancy shifting one way and then the other. The club simplified its name in 1929 to ‘Ordnance Survey’ but the side struggled in the bottom three or four places in the league, reaching rock bottom of Division Two in 1930/31, but sixth out of fourteen the following season. Finishing third from bottom in 1933/34 the club slipped out of County Football for what proved to be sixty four years, returning to the Southampton Senior League.

Success became hard to come by although the reserves won the Southampton Junior ‘B’ Cup in 1937. The club switched to Sunday Football from 1960 to 1966 then returned to Saturday’s rejoining the Southampton Junior Division 8. The club swiftly worked their way through the junior ranks and achieved promotion to the Premier Division for a short period in 1973. The club won the Senior Division One title twice in 1982/83 and 1992/93, and the Reserves lifted the Junior ‘A’ Cup in 1993.

The club grew in size from that year with a 3rd XI and a veterans XI being formed. The Veterans side had much success winning Junior 6 in 1996 and gained successive promotions before becoming founder members of the now very popular Veterans League. The first team won the Premier Division of the Southampton Senior League in 1996/97 which took them back into the County fold. The club just missed what should have been a unique treble, each time they have joined the league in their own right they have finished runners-up in their first season.

In both the 1921/22 and 1924/25 seasons this feat was accomplished but they were just two points short of repeating this in 1997/98. However, this was put right the following season as they finished runners-up to Clanfield in 1998/99 and gained promotion to the newly formed Division One. AFC STONEHAM

By now the club had realized that a stable future lay in the hands of young players and so set up a youth policy starting with an under 16 side in the first year and an under 18 side starting in 1998. This proved a great success as the U18’s side won the Southampton Youth Division Three at the first attempt gaining promotion to Division Two. In this season the Vets gained promotion to Division Two in addition to winning the Veterans Cup. Even though the 1998/99 season was a great success for the club on the field an era ended as the Civil Service Ground was closed at the end of that season. Fortunately, with the help of the local council, ‘Survey’ were relocated to Lordshill Recreation Ground. The club knew that this was to be a temporary arrangement and moved to their new home ground at Stoneham Park in 2002.

The First Division of the Hampshire League proved to be too strong and the club were relegated in their first season at the higher level (1999/00). Positions of 11th, 8th, 4th, and 6th were attained before the formation of the Wessex League Third Division in 2004/05. The team finished 13th and 12th in that league before opening a new chapter in the clubs history by changing its name to Stoneham in 2006.

After finishing 14th in the Wessex League Second Division, in 2006/07, the club along with sixteen other teams became founder members of the newly formed Hampshire which was set up following the dissolution of the Wessex League bottom division. During the 2007 close season the club decided to enhance it’s name by adding ‘AFC’ to Stoneham, which had an immediate effect with AFC Stoneham winning the in the 2007/08 season and reaching the final of the leagues Senior Cup, just missing out on an impressive double. 2009/10 saw the Senior League Cup added to the honours list while the U16 team won Division 3 of the Southampton Youth League.

Further success followed in 2011/12, having moved again to Jubilee Park the previous season, with the Reserves completing a League and League Cup double and the U16 team winning their League for the third season in a row. The First Team also went to St Marys in the Southampton Senior Cup Final for the first time and beat Bush Hill to achieve their highest honour to date. The Club also combined with Granley Rovers FC incorporating a complete youthsetup into the Club which now provided football from Minnows through toVeterans.

The success of the previous season was continued into 2012/13 with the Club joining an elite list of teams who have retained the Southampton Senior Cup with a win against Brockenhurst on penalties.

The Southampton U18 team won Division 2 and many of the Clubs now 17 teams reached finals and semi-finals and finished in high league positions. In 2015 the Club earned promotion to the Wessex League whilst winning the Hampshire Premier League Cup for the second time. The Club finished 8th in their first season in the Wessex League Division 1 and our youth teams won the Testway League Cups at under 15 and 16 while our under 18 Hampshire Youth team won the Hampshire Youth League Cup. This season also saw the first Ladies team competing in Hampshire Womens Division 1.

Season 2016/17 saw us switch on our brand new floodlights on October 6th 2016. The first team ventured into the FA Vase for the first time in our history navigating past Malmesbury Victoria and Longlevens both from the Hellenic League before losing to Shaftesbury. We beat Aldershot Town 5-0 in the Russell Cotes Cup before losing to Southern League Premier Gosport Borough 3-2 in the quarter final and went out at the same stage of the 2-0 at Basingstoke Town. AFC STONEHAM

Our reserves, with the emphasis now very much on developing young players from our youth system, reached the final of the Wyvern Combination Cup losing 2-1 to Southern League Petersfield Town. Our first team finished 8th again in our 2nd season in Wessex Division 1.

Season 2017/18 saw us improve our league position to 5th whilst reaching the final of the Russell Cotes Cup losing to Wessex League Premier Champions Andover Town 1-0 in the final at their ground in front of over 500 people. We enjoyed memorable nights on the way to the final winning 4-3 at AFC Portchester in the quarter final and 3-1 at AFC Totton in the semi final.

The current season has the club running 30 teams from Under 7s to our Wessex League team including a ladies team whilst we have also started our own Player Development Centre , an FA Wildcats Centre for girls and our own Saturday Morning Fun Club for children aged 4-9 as a way of introducing them to the beautiful game. Our first team remain unbeaten after 20 league games and 6 months of football, one of only three teams at our level in the country to do so, as we push for promotion to the Wessex Premier League.

For the first time in our 100 year history we entered the FA Cup as one of the lowest ranked teams in the competition and had tremendous victories at AFC Portchester 3-0 after a replay and 2-0 at home to Evo Stick South league Westfields from Woking . Sadly our adventure was curtailed by Cirencester Town in the next round at home in front of over 350 supporters.

Prior to the Cirencester game and as the lowest ranked team left in the competition we had a visit from the FA Cup with many of our junior players and first team present for photos on a memorable day which brought the club both TV and Newspaper coverage. Our first ever FA Cup adventure will live in the memory for a very long time.We finished the season with a Southampton Senior Cup final at St Marys Stadium where we unfortunately lost 3-0 to Alresford Town. The cup run to the final saw us win at both Wessex Premier league Lymington Town and Hamble before winning a memorable semi final against Winchester City 4-3 having been behind three times and winning in the 94th minute with a Ben Clarke goal.

We finished our league campaign as Wessex Division One champions on another memorable night at Totton and Eling where we clinched the title with a 3-3 draw having played three games in five days.

The 2018/19 season was undoubtedly a fantastic one for the club allowing us to now take on the challenge of the Wessex Premier league for the first time in our history as we move to our brand new £9M facility. Match Report By Malcolm Clarke WINCHESTER CITY 2 -1 AFC TOTTON

A healthy crowd of 206 saw Winchester beat AFC Totton 2-1 in a local derby with Simba Mlambo scoring his second brace in successive games. AFC Totton have finished 10th in each of the last two seasons, but have lost some players from last season, but their team contained former Winchester players Craig Feeney and Dave Allen. Winchester made three changes to the starting line-up from Saturday with Ollie Balmer, Oli Bailey and Danny King coming in for I K Hill, Rob Carr and Liam Gilbert with the first named being on the substitutes bench.

Winchester made a positive start with AFC Totton goalkeeper Archie Mat- thews having to save a shot and a header from Simba Mlambo in the first 10 minutes. At the other end Rob Flooks made an important block to keep out Liam Callaghan.

Winchester though continued to press and apart from having a strong appeal for a penalty for hand ball turned down they came close on other occasions with Mlambo, Griggs and Balmer all farcing further saves from Mat- thews an d Danny King having one effort go across the goal. On a couple of occasions Matthews just beat Bailey to a loose ball. At the other end Robin Nicholls shot just wide for Match Report By Malcolm Clarke

the visitors, but Winchester had very much the better of the first half. However just as it looked as though the first half was going to end goalless Janie Barron set up Simba Mlambo for the opener just before the interval.

Although Rob Flooks had a header that went just wide AFC Totton came more into the game in the second half with Liam Callaghan coming close with a free kick and Ryan Pryce who had hardly anything to do in the first half being called into action. Winchester however were desper- ately unlucky not to score a second when a free kick by Ollie Balmer nit the cross bar. Midway through the half the visitors drew level through Lewis Beale..

Winchester came close to regain- ing the lead with Balmer having a header saved, Bailey shooting just wide and Kieran Douglas heading just wide,. They scored the second through Simba Mlambo's header from Danny King's cross with 7 minutes to go and although the visitors tried hard to get back in the game Winchester who bought on Max Smith, I K Hill and Jack Francis as second half substitutes were able to complete the win. The Citizens Post malcolms musings

We welcome AFC Stoneham to Winchester for today’s F A Cup tie. To reach this stage of the competition AFC Stoneham won 2-0 at Brockenhurst thanks to a first half goal by Mat Bainbridge and a second half goal which was a good achievement as like themselves Brockenhurst had won both of their opening two league games.

Although AFC Stoneham are a division below us they like ourselves beat two teams from a higher division than themselves in last season’s F A Cup with their 2-0 win against Westfield (the Surrey version rather than the Sussex version) being particularly meritorious bearing in mind that Westfield play at our current level and reached the playoffs last season.

Last season the clubs met in the Southampton Senior Cup and AFC Stoneham showed terrific fighting spirit to come from being a goal behind three times to eventually win 4-3 with two goals by Zach Glasspool, one by Sergio Caballero and one by Ben Clarke., with Oli Bailey (2) and Simba Mlambio scoring Winchester’s goals. Although AFC Stoneham lost the final to Alresford Town they did have the consolation of winning the Sydenham’s Wessex League Division 1 and with it promotion to the Premier Division.

Apart from the cup successes already mentioned AFC Stoneham achieved other good results in cup competition last season including a F A Vase success against Binfield of the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division.

I would like to welcome Tony Smith back to Winchester for today’s match.. Tony is now secretary of AFC Stoneham, but was previously a photographer with Winchester City for several seasons, a role he also filled at Eastleigh. Having looked at the player profiles on the AFC Stoneham website I identified Matt Palmer and Joe Sutherden as players who featured in the F A Cup victory at Brockenhurst as players who had previously played for Winchester City.

Although I have passed their ground on several occasions and know that their players regularly meet at the Cricketers Arms in Chestnut Avenue, Eastleigh after games the only time I have seen them play was when under the name of Ordnance Survey they played against Eastleigh Reserves. They were formed in 1919 and cater for players of all levels and are a progressive club who are hoping to move to a new ground. Although the club was previously named Ordnance Survey and Stoneham it is really since they changed their name to AFC Stoneham at the start of the 2007/08 season that they really made their mark in local football.

In their first season of Hampshire League football since the change of name they were Premier Division champions and they spent seven further seasons in Hampshire League football before joining Syden- ham’s Wessex League Division 1 where before last season’s championship success they finished 8th twice and 5th once. They were also were losing finalists in the Russell Cotes Cup in 2017/18. They have also won the Southampton Senior Cup in both 2012 and 2013 and Eastleigh MP Mims Davies has visited their ground.

Anyway coming back to Winchester City our F A Cup run of last season in which we reached the 4th qualifying round of the F A Cup for the 1st time in more than 60 years will live in many people’s minds for a long time, in particular the wins against Frome and Merthyr Tydfil. The money we earned from that run was a great boost for the club and we will be determined to do well again this season, even though we know that today’s game against opponents with a renowned cup pedigree will not be easy. Winchester City had a well-deserved FA Cup in the 2018-19 season. It all started for City at home to Bournemouth Poppies, when a late Tyrell Mitford penalty earnt City a trip to Frome Town.

City took the lead in Wiltshire, but the hosts from the league above levelled in the second half, to take the game to a replay. A Connor Cocklin header in the second half of extra-time took City through, but there was further drama after a floodlight fire caused a lengthy delay in the latter stages of extra-time. Fortunately, the referee allowed play to finally resume, and City sealed an away trip to Merthyr Town.

Tyrell Mitford was the star of the show as he netted a hat-trick at Southern Premier League side, Merthyr Town. City came away 4-1 winners, producing an upset, and they were awarded with a home tie against Cirencester Town.

There was a power cut and heavy rain in the build-up to the Cirencester cup tie. A healthy crowd watched on as City beat their Southern League Division One South counterparts. The resulting draw handed City a cup tie away at Torquay United.

The players began the day with a private breakfast at The Winchester Hotel & Spa, before boarding the coach down to Plainmoor. City, who were watched by several hundred travelling fans in a crowd of over 2,200, started brightly and Torquay didn’t take the lead until a third of the way through the game, via a heavily deflected effort. The Gulls then netted twice more before half-time to effectively kill the tie. Torquay scored again not long after the restart, but City got their chance to shine, when Joe Hayward scored a penalty in front the ecstatic visiting fans.

It was a day that will go down in the clubs’ history, an occasion was the joint-fur- thest the club had ever got in the FA Cup. WINCHESTER CITY Football Club PLAYER PROFILES

Looking back on the previous season WCYFC had a very successful 2018/19 with 20 teams from U7s to U16s playing across the EDMSL, Tyro and CSYL leagues. In the competi- tive Tyro leagues U13 Blues won their division. U11 Blues won the Tyro Challenge Trophy and U7 Blues were finalists in the EDMSL Cup Final.

WCYFC are proud that we can offer players a footballing pathway from young players through to teenagers and onto playing football at U18 and beyond. Our links with Winchester City FC are vital in ensuring a progression for the 15 and 16 year olds to bridge the gap to adult football. Many of the players in the Winchester City U16s side that won the Hamp- shire Cup this season came through from Winchester City Youth Fc and there are ex WCYFC players in the current U16s U17s

Football is FUN – playing with friends, running around, scoring (not scoring), celebrating, being part of a team, learning, improving, laughing and having fun.

FUN is at the heart of our Development Squad sessions – these players are 4-6 years old in school years R & 1 and Winchester City Youth FC have a special session for them every Saturday morning at Chilcomb. Experienced coaches build sessions around the FA FUNda- mental ABCs – Agility, Balance, Coordination and Skills, but most important is that the children all have a football at their feet and have fun.

This is the foundation of the club and the members of the Development squad go on to form the U7 teams when they reach Yr 2. For more information and to get involved contact us on [email protected]
