Elimination of Leaven בִּ יעוּר חָמֵץ

ׇָ Let any fermentation or leaven in myכּל־ ֲח ִמיָרא ַו ֲח ִמי ָעא ְדּ ִא ָכּא ִבְרשׁ ִוּתי possession, whether or not I have noticed it and ַדּ ֲח ִמ ֵתּהּ וּ ְד ָלא ֲח ִמ ֵתּהּ ְדּ ַב ֲﬠִר ֵתּהּ וּ ְד ָלא whether or not I have eliminated it, be nulliﬁed ַב ֲﬠִר ֵתּהּ ִל ְב ִטיל ְו ֶל ֱהֵוי ְכּ ַע ְפָרא ְד ַאְר ָעא׃ and become as the dust of the earth.

Mingling of Foods עֵ ירוּב תַּ בְשִׁילִ ין

1 ,Blessed are You ָבּרוּך ַא ָתּה ,Adonai, our God יְ יָ אֱ לֹהֵ ֽ ינוּ 1 ,Sovereign of the universe ֶ ֽמ ֶלך ָהעוֹ ָלם who has sanctiﬁed us with your commandments ֲא ֶשׁר ִק ְדּ ָ ֽשׁנוּ ְבּ ִמ ְצ ֹו ָתיו and commanded us regarding the ְו ִצָ ֽוּנוּ ַעל ִמ ְצַות ֵערוּב׃ commandment of “mingling.”

By means of this “mingling,” let it be ַבּ ֲה ֵדין ֵערוּ ָבא ְי ֵהא ָשֵׁרא ָ ֽל ָנא ְל ֵמ ֵיפא permissible for us to bake, cook, insulate hot וּלְבַשָּׁלָא וּלְאַטְמָנָא וּלְאַדְלָקָא שְׁרָגָא foods, transfer ﬁre, and tend to all our needs וּ ְל ֶמ ְע ַבּד ׇכּל־ ָצְר ָכּ ָנא ִמיּוֹ ָמא ָט ָבא ְל ַשׁ ְבּ ָתא during the festival for the Sabbath—for us and ָ ֽלנוּ וּ ְל ׇָכל־ ַה ָדִּרים ָבּ ִעיר ַהזֹּאת׃ for all who reside in this city.

(Uncover the matzot , lift the egg and shank bone, and

recite:) הָא לַחְמָא עַנְיָא This is the bread of poverty ִדּי ֲא ָכלוּ ַא ְב ָה ָת ָנא that our ancestors ate בְּאַרְעָא דְמִצְרָיִם. .in the land of Egypt כׇָּ ל דִּ כְפִ ין Let all who are hungry ֵי ֵיתי ְו ֵי ֻכל. 1 !ׇ come and eatכּל ִדּ ְצִריך Let all who are needy יֵיתֵ י וְיִפְסַח. !come and partake of the Passover oﬀering הָשַׁתָּא הָכָא. ;Now, we are here לְשָׁנָה הַבָּאָה בְּאַרְעָא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל. .next year, may we be in the land of Israel הָשַׁתָּא עַבְדֵי. ;Now, we are slaves לְשָׁנָה הַבָּאָה בְּנֵי חוֹרִ ין׃ next year, may we be free.

We were slaves ֲﬠ ָב ִדים ָה ִיינוּ ,to Pharaoh in Egypt לְפַרְ עֹה בְּמִצְרָיִם. and Adonai, our God, brought us out from there וַ יּוֹצִיאֵ נוּ יְ יָ אֱ לֹהֵ ינוּ מִשָּׁם with a strong hand ְבּ ָיד ֲחָז ָקה .and an outstretched arm וּ ִ ב ְ ז ר וֹ עַ נְטוּיָה. .in Egypt ַו ֲא ִפילוּ ,Therefore ֻכּ ָלּנוּ ֲח ָכ ִמים. ,even if we were all wise ֻכּ ָלּנוּ ְנבוֹ ִנים. ,all insightful ֻכּ ָלּנוּ ְז ֵק ִנים. ,all elders ְכּ ָלּנוּ יוֹ ְד ִעים ֶאת ַהתּוָֹרה. ,and all knowledgeable in the Torah מִצְוָה עָלֵ ינוּ we would still be commanded לְסַפֵּר בִּיצִיאַת מִצְרָיִם. .to discuss the exodus from Egypt ְו ׇָכל־ ַה ַמְּר ֶבּה Moreover, one who elaborates לְסַפֵּר בִּיצִיאַת מִצְרָיִם on the exodus from Egypt ֲהֵרי ֶזה ְמ ֻשׁ ָבּח׃ is worthy of praise.

A tale is told ַמ ֲﬠ ֶשׂה ,of Rabbi Eliezer ְבַּר ִבּי ֱא ִלי ֶעֶזר ,Rabbi Joshua ְוַר ִבּי ְיהוֹ ֻשַׁע ,Rabbi Elazar son of Azariah ְוַר ִבּי ֶא ְל ָעָזר ֶבּן ֲﬠַזְר ָיה ,Rabbi Akiva ְוַר ִבּי ֲﬠ ִקי ָבא ,and Rabbi Tarfon וְרַבִּי טַרְ פוֹן .who held a seder [lit: reclined] in Bnai Brak ֶשׁ ָהיוּ ְמ ֻס ִבּין ִבּ ְב ֵני ְבַרק. They discussed the exodus from Egypt וְהָ יוּ מְסַפְּרִ ים בִּיצִיאַת מִצְרַיִם ,all that night כׇָּ ל אוֹתוֹ הַלַּיְלָה. until their students came ַעד ֶשׁ ָבּאוּ ַת ְל ִמי ֵדי ֶהם ,and said to them ְו ָא ְמרוּ ָל ֶהם ,Rabbis“ רַ בּוֹתֵ ינוּ the time has come הִ ִ גּ י עַ זְמַן ”.to recite the morning shema ְקִרי ַאת ְשׁ ַמע ֶשׁל ַשׁ ֲחִרית׃

[Egypt must be recalled at night ֶשׁ ֶנּ ֱא ַמר :until Ben Zoma explained ְל ַ ֣מ ַען ִתְּז ֗ ֹכּר ֶאת־ ֤יוֹם ֵ ֽצ ְאת e ֙ך ֵמ ֶ ֣אֶרץ ִמ ְצַ ֔ר ִים ,The Torah says ֖ ֹכּל ְי ֵ ֥מי ַחֶ ֽיּי eך so that you remember the day of your . . .“ ְי ֵמי ַח ֶיּי eך, exodus from Egypt all the days of your הַ יָּמִ ים. life.”[2]Deut. 16:50 ֹכּל ְי ֵמי ַח ֶיּי eך, ”,If it had said merely, “the days of your life הַ לֵּ ילוֹת. .it would have meant only the days ַו ֲח ָכ ִמים אוֹ ְמִרים However, because it says “all the days of your ְי ֵמי ַח ֶיּי eך, ”,life ָהעוֹ ָלם ַהֶזּה. .it includes the nights as well ֹכּל ְי ֵמי ַח ֶיּי eך, :The sages interpret the verse diﬀerently לְהָ בִ יא לִ ימוֹת הַמָּשִׁיחַ׃ “The days of your life” would have referred to this era only. “All the days of your life” includes the messianic era as well.

,Adonai brought us out of Egypt ִמ ֵבּית ֲﬠ ָב ִדים׃ the house of bondage.”

And as for the one who does not know enough ְו ֶשׁ ֵאינוֹ יוֹ ֵדַע ִל ְשׁאוֹל ,to ask אַתָּה פְּתַח לוֹ. ,you should open the discussion for him ֶשׁ ֶנּ ֱא ַמר :as the Torah says ַבּ ֲﬠ ֣בוּר ֶ֗זה ָע ָ ֤שׂה ְיהָו ֙ה ִ֔לי ְבּ ֵצ ִ֖אתי ִמ ִמּ ְצָ ֽר ִים “It is because of what Adonai did for me when I left Egypt.”[7]Exod. 13:8

One might have thought that [the ָיכוֹל ֵמרֹאשׁ ֹח ֶדשׁ. commandment to discuss the exodus could be תַּ לְ מוּד לוֹמַר fulfilled from at any time] from the first of the בַּ יּוֹם הַ הוּא. .[month [of Nisan, onward אִי בַּ יּוֹם הַ הוּא Therefore, we need the words יָ כוֹל מִבְּ עוֹד יוֹם. on that day”[8]Exodus 13:8 [to teach us that“ תַּ לְ מוּד לוֹמַר the commandment applies to the specific day on ַבּ ֲﬠבוּר ֶזה. which the Exodus took place, that is, the ַבּ ֲﬠבוּר ֶזה לֹא ָא ַמְר ִתּי. [fifteenth of Nisan.] But [based on the phrase ֶא ָלּא ְבּ ָשׁ ָעה ,[on that day” [alone“ ֶשׁ ֵיּשׁ ַמ ָצּה וּ ָמר ֹו ר e one might have thought that [the commandment ֻמ ָנּ ִחים ְל ָפ ֶניך׃ could be fulfilled] during the day [of the fourteenth.] Therefore, we need the words “because of this.” You could not say “because of this” at any time other than [the Seder night,] when matzah and maror lie before you, [since the term “this” must refer to something in the speaker’s presence].

If he had brought us into the land of Israel, but had not built the temple for us, it would have been enough for us!

What abundant, manifold goodness the ַעל ַא ַחת ַכּ ָמּה ְו ַכ ָמּה טוֹ ָבה ְכפוּ ָלה וּ ְמ ֻכ ֶפּ ֶלת !Omnipresent has shown us לַמָּ קוֹם עָלֵ ינוּ. ,He brought us out of Egypt ֶשׁהוֹ ִצי ָאנוּ ִמ ִמּ ְצַר ִים. ,[and executed judgments against [the Egyptians ְו ָע ָשׂה ָב ֶהם ְשׁ ָפ ִטים. ,and acted against their gods ְו ָע ָשׂה ֵבּאלֹ ֵהי ֶהם. ,and killed their ﬁrstborn ְו ָהַרג ְבּכוֵֹרי ֶהם. ,and gave us their wealth ְו ָנ ַתן ָלנוּ ֶאת ָממוֹ ָנם. ,and split the sea for us ְו ָקַרע ָלנוּ ֶאת ַה ָיּם. ,and brought us through it on dry land ְו ֶה ֱﬠ ִביָרנוּ ְבתוֹכוֹ ֶבּ ָחָר ָבה. ,and drowned our enemies within it וְשִׁקַּע צָרֵ ינוּ בְּ תוֹכוֹ. and satisﬁed our needs in the desert for forty וְסִפֵּק צׇָרְ כֵּ נוּ בַּמִּדְבָּר אַרְ בָּעִ ים שָׁנָה. ,years ְו ֶה ֱא ִכי ָלנוּ ֶאת ַה ָמּן. ,and fed us the manna ְו ָנ ַתן ָלנוּ ֶאת ַה ַשּׁ ָבּת. ,and gave us the Sabbath וְקֵרְ בָ נוּ לִפְנֵי הַר סִינָי. ,and brought us before Mount Sinai ְו ָנ ַתן ָלנוּ ֶאת ַהתּוָֹרה. ,and gave us the Torah ְו ִה ְכ ִנ ָסנוּ ְל ֶאֶרץ ִי ְשָׂר ֵאל. ,and brought us into the land of Israel וּ ָב ָנה ָלנוּ ֶאת ֵבּית ַה ְבּ ִחיָרה and built the temple for us לְכַפֵּר עַל כׇָּ ל עוֹנוֹתֵ ינוּ׃ to atone for all our transgressions.

Rabban Gamliel would say: Anyone who does not mention רַבָּן גַּמְלִיאֵל הָיָה אוֹמֵר. ׇָ these three thingsכּל ֶשׁלֹּא ָא ַמר on Passover שְׁלֹשָׁה דְ בָרִ ים אֵ לּוּ ,does not fulﬁll his obligation ַבּ ֶפּ ַסח :and these are they ל ֹא יָצָא יְדֵי חוֹבָ תוֹ. ,the Passover oﬀering וְאֵ לּוּ הֵן. ,the matsah ֶפּ ַסח .and the bitter herbs מַצָּה וּמָ ֹרור

The Passover oﬀering ֶפּ ַסח that our ancestors would eat ֶשׁ ָהיוּ ֲאב ֵוֹתינוּ אוֹ ְכ ִלים ,at the time that temple stood ַבְּזּ ַמן ֶשׁ ֵבּית ַה ִמּ ְק ָדּשׁ ַק ָיּם. ?what does it represent עַל שׁוּם מָה. It recalls עַל שׁוּם 1 how the blessed Holy One passed over ֶשׁ ָפּ ַסח ַה ָקּדוֹשׁ ָבּרוּך הוּא ,the houses of our ancestors in Egypt ַעל ַבּ ֵתּי ֲאב ֵוֹתינוּ ְבּ ִמ ְצַר ִים. :as scripture relates ֶשׁ ֶנּ ֱא ַמר You shall say, ‘This is a Passover sacriﬁce to“ ַו ֲא ַמְר ֶ֡תּם ֶ ֽז ַב ֶ֨ח־פּ ַסח ֜הוּא ַ ֽליהָ֗וה ֲא ֶ ֣שׁר ֠ ָפּ ַסח Adonai, who passed over the houses of the עַ ל־בָּתֵּ ֤ י בְנֵ ֽי־יִשְׂרָ אֵ ל֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם בְּנׇגְפּ֥וֹ Israelites in Egypt when he smote Egypt and ֶאת־ ִמ ְצַ ֖ר ִים ְו ֶאת־ ָבּ ֵ ֣תּינוּ ִה ִ ֑צּיל ַו ִיּ ֥ ֹקּד ָה ָ ֖ﬠם spared our houses.’ And the people bowed ַוִֽיּ ְשׁ ַתּ ֲחֽוּוּ low.”[37]Exodus 12:27

The matzah מַצָּה זוּ ,that we eat ֶשׁ ָאנוּ אוֹ ְכ ִלים ?what does it represent עַל שׁוּם מָה. It recalls עַל שׁוּם that our ancestors’ dough did not have time ֶשׁלֹּא ִה ְס ִפּיק ְבּ ֵצ ָקם ֶשׁל ֲאב ֵוֹתינוּ to rise ְל ַה ֲח ִמיץ

The bitter herbs ָמרוֹר ֶזה ,that we eat ֶשׁ ָאנוּ אוֹ ְכ ִלים ?what do they represent עַל שׁוּם מָה. They recall עַל שׁוּם how the Egyptians ֶשׁ ָמְּררוּ ַה ִמּ ְצִר ִיּם embittered the lives of our ancestors ֶאת ַח ֵיּי ֲאב ֵוֹתינוּ ,in Egypt בְּמִצְרַיִם. :as scripture relates ֶשׁ ֶנּ ֱא ַמר And the Egyptians embittered their lives with“ ַו ְי ָמְר ֨רוּ ֶאת־ ַח ֵיּי ֶ֜הם ַבּ ֲﬠ ֹב ָ ֣דה ָק ָ֗שׁה ְבּ ֨ ֹח ֶמ ֙ר hard labor in mortar and bricks, and with all וּ ִב ְל ֵב ִ֔נים וּ ְב ׇכל־ ֲﬠ ֹב ָ ֖דה ַבּ ָשּׂ ֶ ֑דה ֚ ֵאת 1 sorts of labor in the ﬁeld – all their labor that ָכּל־ ֲﬠ ֣ ֹב ָד ָ֔תם ֲא ֶשׁר־ ָע ְב ֥דוּ ָב ֶ ֖הם ְבּ ָ ֽפֶרך they set upon them was brutal.”[39]Exodus 1:14

This is because of what the Lord did for me‘ לֹא ֶאת ֲאב ֵוֹתינוּ ִבּ ְל ַבד when I left Egypt.’”[40]Exodus 13:8 ָגּ ַאל ַה ָקּדוֹשׁ ָבּרוּ 1ך הוּא. It was not only our ancestors ֶא ָלּא .that the blessed Holy One redeemed אַף אוֹתָ נוּ ,Rather ָגּ ַאל ִע ָמּ ֶהם. even we ֶשׁ ֶנּ ֱא ַמר ,were redeemed with them ְוא ָ ֖וֹתנוּ הוֹ ִ֣ציא ִמ ָ ֑שּׁם ְל ַ ֙מ ַע ֙ן ָה ִ֣ביא ֹא ָ֔תנוּ :as scripture says ָ ֤ל ֶתת ָל֙נ ֙וּ ֶאת־ ָה ָ֔אֶרץ ֲא ֶ ֥שׁר ִנ ְשׁ ַ ֖בּע ַל ֲא ֹב ֵ ֽתינוּ “And he brought us out of there in order to bring us to and give us the land that he promised to our ancestors.”[41]Deut 6:23

I loved when Adonai heard my voice when I ֭ ָא ַה ְב ִתּי ִכּי־ ִי ְשׁ ַ ֥מע ׀ ְי ָֹה ֑וה ֶאת־֝קוֹ ִ֗לי ַתּ ֲחנוּ ָ ֽני׃ pleaded. The death of his faithful ones is ַ ֽה ְללוּ־ָ ֽיהּ׃ grievous in the eyes of Adonai. O Adonai, I am Your servant. I am your servant, son of your maidservant. You have released my bonds. I will slaughter a thanksgiving sacrifice to You and call out in the name of Adonai. He causes the dumb to speak ְו ִשׂ ְפת ֵ ֽוֹתינוּ ֶ ֽשׁ ַבח ְכּ ֶמְר ֲח ֵבי ָר ִקיַע. ְו ֵעי ֵ ֽנינוּ releases the bound, supports the fallen, and ְמ ִאירוֹת ַכּ ֶ ֽשּׁ ֶמשׁ ְו ַכ ָיֵּ ֽרַח. ְו ָי ֵ ֽדינוּ ְפּרוּשׂוֹת ,straightens the bent. releases the bound ְכּ ִנ ְשֵׁרי ָשׁ ָ ֽמ ִים. ְוַר ְג ֵ ֽלינוּ ַקלּוֹת ָכּ ַא ָיּלוֹת׃ ֵאין e supports the fallen, and straightens the bent. I published this Haggadah as a print book under the name “Haggadah with Gender-Neutral Language” by Nancy Quinn Collins, with the following changes: I have removed all the words in the Hebrew alphabet, and changed all the gender-specific words not referring to a specific person or persons of a certain gender to make them gender-neutral. For example I have changed father to parent in the song about the goat bought for two zuzim, and I use words such as One and Creator instead of G-d, including in quotations from scripture, which I believe is a more correct translation. I have also removed “son of [name of father]” from the Haggadah because it does not include the mother’s name as well, and I removed “Teraḥ, father of Abraham and father of Naḥor” for the same reason, replacing the latter quote with ellipses as it is part of scripture. Likewise for similar reasons of gender equality I have removed the quote “and I gave him Isaac. And I gave Isaac Jacob and Esau. And I gave Esau Mount Seir to inherit, and Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt,” replacing it with ellipses, and changed “covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” to simply “covenant…”, and removed “the house of Jacob” from “the house of Jacob from a foreign land”, and “of Jacob” from “Creator of Jacob”. Likewise for the same reasons I have changed “the family of David to “the family of David and Bathsheba” and changed “Your servant David” to “Your servants David and Bathesheba”, and removed “of Jacob” from “Holy One of Jacob” and removed “Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” from “our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”, and changed “family of Aaron” to “family of Aaron and Elisheba”, and changed “passed over the son” to “passed over the offspring”, and changed “devoured Jacob and laid waste his habitations” to “devoured Israel and laid waste our habitations” and changed “brings salvation to His king and acts kindly to Their anointed one, to David” to “acts kindly to David and Bathsheba” and changed “the songs and praises of David, Your anointed servant” to “all other songs and praises”.
