It was in response to Our Holy Father, Pope Francis: Feast of Creation. Each of us had a booklet made especially for the occasion. The sisters next door at 78 were also invited. The booklet had readings from 'Laudato Si', Hymns, Litany of Repentance and Prayer of Petition. As we entered the chapel we were greeted by a wonderful Feast of Creation. 'All things bright and beautiful', arranged among colourful silky cloths, were rabbits, birds butterflies, fish, flowers of all colours, vegetables, fruit, and candles to represent the four seasons. The candles were lit at different parts of the service. Saint Joseph is extraordinary, yet at the same time someone so close to our own ordinary human experiences. He did not do astonishing things, he had no unique charisms (spiritual gifts), nor did he appear special in the eyes of those who met him. He was not famous or even noteworthy: the Gospels do not report even a single word of his. Still, through his ordinary life, he accomplished something extraordinary in the eyes of God. God looks on the heart, and in Joseph he recognised the heart of a father, aBle to Be life-giving in the midst of daily routines. All vocations have this same goal: to give and renew life every day. The Lord desires to shape hearts that are open, capaBle of great initiatives, generous in self-giving, compassionate in comforting anxieties and steadfast in strengthening hopes. Vocations such as the priesthood and consecrated life greatly need these qualities. In these uncertain times, with the sufferings of the pandemic, with fears aBout the future and the very meaning of life, Joseph comes to meet us in his gentle way as one of “the saints next door”. Fidelity. The word fidelity means faithfulness – honest, lasting devotion. Joseph is the “righteous man” (Mt 1:19) who each day quietly serves God and his plans.

The readings for this final Sunday of Eastertide remind us again of all the graces we have received through Jesus’s death and resurrection, and the joy which comes from knowing just how much we are loved by God. In the First Reading, we hear of the election of Matthias, who takes the place of Judas, ‘the one who chose to be lost’. He joins the Apostles as one who gives witness to the wonder of the Lord’s Resurrection. The short Psalm extract reflects the enormity of God’s love, and the boundless depths of his forgiveness – a theme expanded further in the Second Reading. Here, John’s letter reminds us that it is because God loved us first with such infinite love, that we must love one another. Through Jesus’s sacrifice, we are saved and can live as one with God, with Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel, we hear Jesus himself as he intercedes for the disciples and for us – asking his Father for everything he knows we need as he sends us out into the world. During the coming week, let’s pray for the grace to recognise the gifts we have been given, and for a greater awareness of how we can use them in showing our love for others.

Slight in build, fragile in health, Elizabeth Prout spent her life in the service of the poor: the mill girls of Manchester, the refugees from the Irish Potato Famine, the needy of Sutton, St Helens and the unemployed of Ashton-under-Lyne during the Lancashire Cotton Famine. Through her work she implemented educational changes that raised up the Catholic population. She provided Homes for the motherly care of Catholic working girls.
