From the Deputies

We welcome to all our Tempe High School students and families to the 2021 school year. It is always exciting to start a new year and reignite the passion we all have for teaching and learning. It has been wonderful to see our students back at school and settling in so quickly and so well. There is a lovely positive energy and enthusiasm across the school.

Welcome also to Ms Sheree Bourke as our newly appointed Deputy Principal. Ms Bourke is fortunate to be the Deputy Principal overseeing both Years 9 and 10. Together, with Ms Fountoulis (Years 8 and 12) and Ms Taoube (Years 7 and 11) the Deputy Principals have the privilege of supervising year cohorts which involves looking after the curriculum, welfare and discipline needs of the students in these year groups.

Congratulations and thank you to our parents for supporting the school and getting your children ready for the New Year. One of the most helpful things you can do to support your child at home is to establish healthy routines. While so much in our lives is unpredictable at this time, we can try to make some things predictable for our children. Setting up a daily schedule that outlines predictable routines can help to reduce stress and anxiety. When children know what to expect, they are more available to learn, problem-solve, create, and connect. To develop their own organisational skills, students have taken part in seminars and workshops by Elevate to help improve their study techniques, increase motivation, build confidence, and lift exam performance. Students have returned with zest and maturity and it is wonderful to see students excited about their new school year. Tempe High School has a long record of excelling in the HSC, and this is due to the seniors at our school being focused, dedicated, and supported by incredibly talented teachers and fantastic families. Being a senior at Tempe High School is an absolute privilege, but it also comes with responsibility. Seniors at Tempe High School are responsible for their own learning and are required to attend class on time, complete all work to the best of their ability, set themselves goals, aim high and support each other. Most importantly, seniors need to know their teachers, reach out for help when needed and be positive leaders and role models for the school. All our seniors should be challenging themselves, but also taking some time to enjoy their experiences at Tempe High School.

Year 7 had a fantastic start to the year. They are making a positive impression with their behaviour and enthusiasm for high school. We look forward to working with and getting to know every student. It is a privilege to lead and work with our students and staff at Tempe High. The ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening will be an opportunity for Year 7 parents and carers to be introduced to the classroom teachers as well as the learning support staff and our wellbeing team. The Year 7 Camp will go ahead, with more information to follow. The camp is a terrific opportunity for Year 7 students to bond and have fun. It is a highlight of the year and it is an event that students remember fondly when they look back on their schooling.

We ask all our students to wear their uniform with pride and dignity. All students are required to wear the correct school uniform every day. Students are expected to wear the uniform during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when engaged in school activities out of school hours, as per Department of Education policy. If your child has outgrown their uniform, please consider donating any uniform items to the school or Noffs. Any donations are warmly received and appreciated.

The Deputy Principals look forward to another momentous year of learning and the restart of extra- curricular activities

Silver Award Excursion 2020

On the 14th of December, Tempe High School students who earned a Silver Award went on an excursion/picnic to Gunnamatta Bay in Cronulla. The excursion was incredibly enjoyable as we were allowed to swim and play in the water as well as being provided with a free lunch - barbecued sausages and drinks!

While the weather appeared cold, wet and generally quite miserable the decision was made to stick to the plan and just try our luck. We gathered in the hall for roll marking then ventured outside to begin our journey to Sydenham Station. Our plans were temporarily halted as a downpour of torrential rain emerged. The clouds became dark and the weather was worsened by the wind which ensured we all got a good soaking. We decided to wait for the rain to stop, but the rain appeared to be never ending so we took the plunge and walked in the rain. Unfortunately, some students did not have umbrellas, so by the time we reached the station, they were soaked! Luckily the rain had lessened and was now a light drizzle. We waited for around 2 minutes, and the train we had to catch to Wolli Creek arrived. Everyone quickly boarded the train and off we went to Wolli Creek station! We soon reached Wolli Creek station, and nearly as soon as we arrived, the train to Cronulla had come. We hurriedly boarded the train, excited for the picnic we were worried that the bad weather would continue when we reached Cronulla beach, but fortunately the weather started improving the rain stopped and the temperature was slowly on the rise. The train ride was a very long, but peaceful and a comfortable one. People could enjoy talking to friends, eating snacks or just sit back and relax as we passed by many suburbs. Lots of the suburbs some we didn’t even know existed!

When we finally stopped at Cronulla, we got off and walked about 10 minutes until we finally saw it- the beach! We had to do a test to see if we were good swimmers to be able to enter the water first, but after that, we could swim around, play games with friends and find many interesting things underwater! We found a few seashells and I even saw a small fish. Some people didn’t bring their swimming costumes, or didn’t want to swim, so they occupied themselves with some land based activities such as making sand castles and playing on the play equipment.

Everyone was very tired after enjoying the beach, but luckily it was now lunch time. We were provided with free barbecued sausages with bread and drinks of your choice! The sausage options on offer were Aussie beef sausages, vegetarian and halal. We could also choose from Coca Cola, Solo and water. For some students one sausage was not enough though so they went for seconds, thirds even fourths. After a long, exhausting fun day, all the students got to go home. We caught the train from Cronulla station and students departed at different stations on the journey home. It was a wonderful day, and everyone who went on the excursion thoroughly enjoyed it.

VOLLEYBALL The Volleyball Boys Make STATE for the Third Year Running!

The boys began their CHS campaign by playing against Lucas Heights at Menai on Tuesday the 9th of February. They were very convincing in their win to go through to Central Venue Day beating Lucas Heights 25-9, 25-9. On Monday the 15th of February the boys played at Menai Indoor Centre to compete for a place in State. Our first game against was over fairly quickly when we won our two sets 25-7 and 25-9. As we reached the quarter finals, we played a strong game against Sydney Tech, to walk into the Grand Final with our place in State already secured. Our team was extremely strong on the day and the boys showed their true talent by being able to adapt and play in different positions as needed. Our boys have worked hard to make this level and will continue to train hard for State which is held early in Term 3. Special mention and congratulations to Kevin Nguyen and Anh Truong who were selected for Sydney East and will go on to play regionals in week 7. I’m proud of these boys and all they’ve achieved, they inspire me to want to be a better coach.

Watch Out! The Girls are making a Name for Themselves in Volleyball!

For three years our girls have worked hard in the volleyball program, to keep improving, to make progress and to make a name for themselves. They’ve shown up to early morning practice at 7am in 5 degree temperatures, fingers freezing, but still given it their all. Sometimes they’ll say to me that they think they aren’t making any progress. But they are and they definitely have. Last year, we were knocked out early in the Central Venue Day, this year, we came into the competition as a solid team. The girls began by beating Woolooware High School convincingly in the first match. We then went on to play Kingsgrove High School. What a match! We lost the first set and were down by over 7 points in the second. It looked like we wouldn’t be able to hold on, but out of nowhere, the girls rallied in a way I haven’t seen them rally before. We fought our way back to win the second. The third was the decider. The pressure was on, but our girls were determined. We rallied hard and made our way into quarter finals where we finally overcame a very hard challenge from Kingsgrove. On to quarter finals. Our girls were exhausted from the Kingsgrove match but put up one amazingly strong fight against Sydney Girls. We were diving, jumping and working for every point. Although it was a close, game, we lost to a hard finishing Sydney Girls who went on to win the competition. Special mention to Gabriel Lee who has been shortlisted into the top 15 for Sydney East. Top 10 will be decided after another tryout. Very proud of our girls, their coach Ray and the effort they have all put into training for this competition. This year we hope to see lots of success from our Open Girls team.

Onwards and Upwards Tempe.

2021 Swimming Carnival

On Thursday the 11th of February we had our annual swimming carnival. The day was a great success, with a large amount of participation in races, great weather and awesome house and school spirit. I commend all those students that participated in any races during the day. Any student who participated in a race received 1 house point, 3rd place received 2 points and 2nd place scored 3 points. If you placed first in any race you earned 4 points for your house. We also awarded points for good sportsmanship and helping others, of which there was plenty. The house score totals for the day were: 1st: Ares: 175 2nd: Apollo: 172 3rd: Pegasus: 160 4th: Poseidon: 123 I will present the House Trophy to the Ares house captains at the next school assembly.

Year 10 Child studies

Year 10 Child Studies have started off with an exciting Term! Our focus for this term is Children’s Health and students have the opportunity to participate in a real life baby simulation. Although not an assessment, students are putting the skills they’ve learnt in class into practice by caring for an electronic baby overnight. This means feeding, changing nappies and caring for the baby when it cries. It has been quite an experience for the students so far and possibly one of the best insights into parenthood! Students are also looking forward to day-care visits and other exciting opportunities later in the year.

I’m an advocate for learning to fail well and using this as a part of your experiences that then shape your approach to learning. It’s not about perfection as much as it is about genuine engagement, passion and curiosity in learning. Finally, I believe that we need to teach and understand what it looks like to have integrity in our creative work. The Creative and Performing Arts at Tempe High have big plans for 2021. It was a difficult year for the arts in 2020 with so much of our industry (and even our own events) coming to a standstill. However, we’ve come into the New Year with a great passion to keep telling and expressing the stories of our world whether it be through visual mediums, music, dance or drama. Already we have had some wonderful moments in the first few weeks and exciting opportunities coming up.

Music have begun all their lessons with students finding ways to engage with practical performance elements. Most lunch times P5 is filled with eager students rehearsing their assessments or jamming together. We welcomed back Peter Morgan to work with students and continue to help HSC students in their performances. The Tempe High School Extracurricular Music Ensembles Program has returned in 2021 with rehearsals returning from week 4 for Wind Ensemble led by Mr Norrish on Tuesday mornings and Concert Band and Stage Band Led by Murray Jackson on Thursday afternoons. Students from years 7 - 12 have dusted off their instruments after a restful break and are ready to begin a year full of rehearsals, performances and creativity as they embrace the Tempe High School ethos of working to achieve their personal best. After a disrupted year of uncertainty and changing regulations, the Extracurricular Music Ensembles Program is re- establishing some of our smaller ensembles beginning with the Tempe Choir led by Lucy Bails, which will rehearse on Wednesday mornings before school from week 5. Any students interested in joining the Extracurricular Music Ensembles Program can contact Mr Norrish in the CAPA staffroom or by email at [email protected]

The new extracurricular program will provide students with the opportunity to shoot, develop and scan their own rolls of black and white 35mm film. Although a dying art, analogue photography teaches the foundational skills of light exposure and camera operation. Once or twice a month sessions will be held after school on a Monday where Ms Clark will guide students through the developing process. Resources for loading tanks and scanning negatives will be available at lunchtimes through a booking system. This process is a hybrid practice of combining film photography with digital post-production. Year 7 Year 7 has settled in really well in their Technology classes. Over the course of the year they will be completing 4 units including bridge building, baking their own muffin creation, sewing a reusable bag and designing their own game using coded game lab. Each unit combines both practical and theory work. In year 8 next year, the students will revisit these technologies again (i.e. Materials - Textiles, Food and Agriculture, Engineering and Coding) with new and challenging projects. All the TAS teachers are very impressed with how year 7 have approached their technology lessons with maturity and enthusiasm. Stayed tuned for the next newsletter for some pictures of their work. Year 9 Textiles Technology - Miss Black This year students in Year 9 Textiles Technology will engage in a range of textiles projects. This term they will start with a pair of pyjama pants and apply decorative techniques to a ready to wear top to complete the set. Students are developing their illustration skills with a range of media and are learning how to use commercial sewing patterns. In term two the focus will be on creating a simple staple garment such as a dress or shirt. In term three students will enter the exciting world of costume design and create their own item of costuming. In term four students will discover the world of textiles art and create their own piece of work. Year 9 Food Technology - Miss Black This term students are undertaking the unit Food in Australia, which introduces students to working in our kitchens for the elective and the influence of various cultures on what we call Australian cuisine. Term two will focus on food selection and the impact these choices have on health. In term three students will explore foods for special needs. Year 9 will end the year with a bang, studying food for special occasions. Year 8 Technology Mandatory (Unit: Digital Technology) - Mrs Lee, Mr O’Neil and Mr Shaw This term, 8N2 and 8N8 are using Micro:bit to develop their coding skills. We have developed this new program called “Do Your Bit” where students explore how powerful coding is in developing innovative solutions in a technological world that we live in. The design brief involves them to identify environmental issues and evaluate existing products and systems that address the issues. Their role as designers this term is to develop a solution using coding to help solve an environmental problem. In completing this unit they will be empowered to do their bit for our today and future by applying computational thinking. Year 9 Graphics Technology - Mrs Lee Both year 9 Graphics Technology classes have begun exploring elements and principles of design. They have put this under a microscope and evaluated how well a range of graphic designs have applied these elements and principles of design. They are now applying their knowledge and developing a unique logo that will be laser cut into a key tag. Year 9 Graphics Technology students will be using a range of awesome technology in this unit to achieve their final design. Just to name a few, they will be using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, the laser cutter and they will get to choose from a range of colourful acrylic material to make their key tags.

The range of homeware designs the students have been developing include; jars, food containers, multi purpose vase and light housing just to name a few. These are valuable skills that year 10 Graphics students are developing that are required in fields such as Engineering, Architecture and Product Design. How awesome is that!

Year 11 Design and Technology - Mrs Lee & Mr Greene We have 2 full classes of Year 11 Design and Technology. Success! The TAS faculty strongly believe that solutions that the world faces today and the future will be solved by these students. They are our world leaders. So we want to congratulate them on taking on this honourable role. They have been busy looking at the theory behind factors affecting design, the design process and studying the range of settings designers work within. In preparation for the development of their design projects, the classes have been looking at successful entries from the Good Design Awards. They evaluated what makes the designs effective and applied the theory to it. They have already practiced some HSC multiple choice questions to become familiar with the terms and concepts examined in this course. In the next few weeks they will be fine tuning their practical skills to allow them to create advanced and highly effective concept models to communicate their solutions to any problem that they explore. They have access to all the very cool resources that TAS Tempe High have, including the 3D printer, laser cutter, Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD and the woodwork and metalwork machinery. What a great place to be a Design and Technology student in!

Year 10 iSTEM - Mr Greene & Mr Liu

Year 10 iSTEM are starting the year with the CAD Spinning Top Challenge. Students have been learning basic CAD skills and are applying principles of motion to design the best performing spinning top possible. Students have access to the 3D printing room and will be designing and testing multiple iterations of their spinning top design. We’re hoping for some fantastic results when we finally get to test the students work! This year, iSTEM has undergone a change in how teaching and learning happens from week to week. One lesson per week is a team teaching lesson, with experts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the room at the same time. We’re hoping this model will help to support students with their skills, knowledge and problem solving skills throughout the year.
