2019 ANNUAL REPORT

Protecting the nature of the place you love Dear Friends and Supporters,

Thank you for your generosity and commitment to protecting the East End environment in 2019. With your support, the Group:

Monitored the East End Osprey population with conservation partners, and learned that our efforts over the past five years are working. The population has increased by 56%.

Filed suit in State Supreme Court against Southampton Town and the developer who has been fighting for years to build a massive luxury golf resort in a Special Groundwater Protection Area and Critical Environmental Area.

Conducted education programs on flora, fauna, and environmental science for 2,360 K-12 students, inside and outside the classroom.

Hosted 75 free nature workshops and outings, including beach grass plantings, shoreline cleanups, and full moon trail hikes. We also partnered with State in its Connect Kids to Parks initiative, an Environmental Protection Fund program.

Participated in a grand jury investigation conducted by the Suffolk County District Attorney, which resulted in a 130-count indictment against several bad actors who knowingly turned backyards, parks and schools into dumping grounds for hazardous materials.

Whether it’s stopping a careless development proposal that has no regard for our drinking water or repairing a nesting platform for Ospreys and their chicks, our goal is the same. The Group protects the nature of the place you love.

Thank you again for your support, and we look forward to seeing you outside!

FOUGHT AGAINST SAND MINE POLLUTING THE GROUNDWATER The Group petitioned the NYS Supreme Court’s Appellate Division to cease the waste processing operations of an industrial sand mine in Bridgehampton, known as Sand Land, where test results had shown that the groundwater was contaminated. The lawsuit was in response to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s inexplicable decision to extend Sand Land’s permit and allow it to expand the mine, further putting the South Fork’s drinking water at risk.

ADVOCATED FOR STRICTER ZONING FOR PLUM ISLAND-RELATED PROPERTY Southold Town enrolled the Group to propose draft legislation that would make the current zoning of nine-acres in Orient Point more restrictive. The Group’s proposal for the property, which includes the Plum Island ferry terminal, was made even stricter by the town, allowing only for residential or Plum Island-related development.

CHALLENGED IRRESPONSIBLE DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL IN COURT The Group filed a lawsuit in NYS Supreme Court against Southampton Town and an - based company to prevent the proposed development of a 590-acre luxury golf and condominium resort in the town’s Aquifer Protection Overlay District. The proposal goes against longstanding zoning laws that were specifically established to conserve the town’s water resources, protect open space and preserve the unique natural environment of the Pine Barrens woodlands.

LED NATURE PROGRAMS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM The Group conducted environmental education programs in 21 schools across the East End— including 126 classroom and/or field lessons. We added new summer programs with the Peconic Community School and East Hampton Project Seedlings, and hosted free nature outings and workshops throughout the year at Downs Farm Preserve in Cutchogue—thanks to the Group’s partnership with Southold Town.

EDUCATED CHILDREN AND BEACHGOERS ON PROTECTING ENDANGERED SHOREBIRDS The Group enrolled more than 200 elementary school students on the North Fork to take the Be A Good Egg pledge, a promise to give endangered and threatened shorebirds ample space to rest, nest and raise their young. Their colorful beach signs were designed to catch the attention of beachgoers and encourage them to respect the needs of the birds. This outreach initiative was funded by Audubon New York and the Long Island Sound Futures Fund and is a natural extension of the Group’s shorebird monitoring partnership with Southold Town.

PARTNERED WITH DRAWDOWN EAST END ON REVERSING GLOBAL WARMING The Group collaborated with grassroots organization Drawdown East End on film festivals and informational sessions to inspire our local community to make simple but necessary changes that will help stop global warming. Project Drawdown’s 100 most substantive solutions to reverse global warming include protecting forests, educating girls, and preserving wetlands—which the Group has been working on for decades.

PARTNERED WITH PSEG TO PROTECT GROWING OSPREY POPULATION Group staff and volunteers monitored Osprey breeding productivity and population status across the five East End towns for the sixth consecutive year. Once on the brink of local extinction, numbers have soared to levels that many could not have imagined just a few years ago. In 2019 we found 368 active nests and 548 new chicks! This healthy population has resulted in some birds choosing to nest on utility poles, which prompted the Group to partner with PSEG Long Island to develop initiatives that protect Osprey while ensuring safe and consistent service for all East Enders.

MONITORED MOSQUITO LARVAE TO REDUCE AERIAL PESTICIDE SPRAYING The Group partnered with NGO’s and East Hampton Town in a pilot program to monitor the mosquito larva population in Accabonac Harbor, which has resulted in a significant reduction in the use of pesticides. Since the program’s inception in 2016, Suffolk County has been able to use a much more targeted approach to spraying, reducing not only the mosquito population and the county’s annual spraying costs by 33%, but allowing wildlife—including bald eagles—to return to the area. This can now be used as a model for similar monitoring efforts on the East End.

CLEARED THE WAY FOR NATIVE PLANTS AND WILDLIFE TO THRIVE Working with almost 40 individual homeowners on Great Pond—a 33-acre freshwater wetlands adjacent to Long Island Sound—the Group began eradicating the stubborn invasive species Phragmites (or common reed), which has been limiting plant and wildlife diversity along the shoreline. Planting native vegetation has helped restore this beautiful fishing and kayaking spot, and improved water quality after dangerous levels of cyanobacteria, which is harmful to humans and potentially deadly to dogs and wildlife, had been detected recently.
