From Closed Capital to Open Metropolis: Transformation of Capital City in Tang and Song China, ca. 700-1100 Hang Lin [email protected] Abstract. Chang’an of the Tang dynasty (630-907) and Kaifeng of the Song dynasty (960- 1127) represents two major stages in the development of the capital city in premodern China. In contrast to Chang’an, a semi-autonomous walled “urban village” separated by wide expanse of transitory space, Kaifeng was a dense city criss-crossed by ad hoc commercial streets filled with a variety of urban activities during days and nights. Indeed, during this period, a number of significant changes took place, which helped to erode the Tang urban structure and to give birth to a new, one in which the closed walled city transformed into an open market city. Based primarily on textual and material evidence, this paper outlines the characteristics of the layout and structure of the two cities and examines various aspects of the daily life in both cities. This comparative analysis sheds light on the unique pattern of transformation of cities in medieval China. Introduction Historians of premodern Chinese urbanism have long assumed that the origins of the Chinese imperial city plan stem from a passage in the Kaogong ji (Record of Artificers) section of the classical text Zhouli (Rituals of Zhou), which describes the city of the King of Zhou (Fig. 1): ‘When the artificer build the capital, [the city should be] a square of nine li on each side, with three gates on each side. -

Linguistics of the Tibeto-Burman Area Volume 33.1 — April 2010 TRANSLATION OF ‘THE STRUCTURE OF THE NAXI PICTOGRAPHIC SCRIPT’ CHAPTER 3 IN A DICTIONARY OF NAXI PICTOGRAPHS BY FANG GUOYU1 Jacob Cawthorne University of Melbourne Abstract: The aim of this translation is to make accessible in English one of the most important chapters of the influential work A Dictionary of Naxi Pictographs, by Fang Guoyu, to a wider audience.2 Through his work, Fang became a chief protagonist in bringing the attention and interest of the Chinese government and intelligentsia upon the Naxi people, the Dongba religion and the script during the mid to late 20th century. Although more contemporary research has superseded Fang’s efforts, his work is still widely used by both Chinese and Western academics as the basis for their research on the script. The core purpose of this chapter is to analyse the structure of the Naxi pictographic script. Fang achieves this by classifying the pictographs into ten categories in accordance with theoretical principles adapted from the liu shu (六书), or six categories of Chinese characters. A discussion of the key features of each category is made and accompanied by examples to further illustrate the distinctive features of each category. A summation on the relevance of the script to the study of writing systems in general is completed at the end of the chapter. In addition, Fang also analyses the Naxi phonographic script as a script in its own right, and its relationship with the Naxi pictographic script. During the past few months the battle in Taiwan about the proposed Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) with China intensified further, leading to daily heated exchanges in the press, an April 25th TV debate between DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen and President Ma Ying-jeou, a May 20th Open Letter by international scholars to Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng, and street demonstrations in Taiwan. Photo: Taipei Times At issue is whether Taiwan should ink a trade agreement with China. The Ma administration is presenting ECFA as a solution to Taiwan’s economic woes, and says it will prevent Taiwan from being margi- nalized. The demo- cratic opposition on the other hand argues that it moves Taiwan far too close Demonstration in Taipei on 20 May 2010 in support of a to China, giving the referendum to decide on ECFA Taiwan Communiqué -2- June / July 2010 PRC leverage to force its way onto the democratic island, at the expense of democracy in Taiwan and its future as a free nation. FTA’s with the US and other countries? A hot issue is also whether Taiwan can sign free trade agreements with other countries after the ECFA with China is finalized. The Ma administration had left this fuzzy in the negotiations, but has tried to assure the people in Taiwan that this was the case. -

This emphasis is encapsulated in populist slogans such as “putting people first” (yiren weiben) and “building a harmonious society” (goujian hexie shehui). At a systemic level, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has declared that it is no longer a “revolutionary” but rather a “ruling party” that needs to modernize and adjust its systems of management (CCP Central Committee 2005). -

Scholars such as Edwin Pullyblank (1984) and Jiang Jialu (2011) have briefly mentioned this development but have not yet thoroughly investigated it. There are approximately 26 Sino-Vietnamese words2 with Ying- initials that nasalize. Scholars such as John Phan (2013: 2016) and Hilario deSousa (2016) argue that Sino-Vietnamese in part comes from a spoken interaction between Việt-Mường and Chinese speakers in Annam speaking a variety of Chinese called Annamese Middle Chinese AMC, part of a larger dialect continuum called Southwestern Middle Chinese SMC. Phan and deSousa also claim that SMC developed into dialects spoken 1 I will use the terms “Sinitic” and “Chinese” interchangeably to refer to languages and speakers of the Sinitic branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. 2 For the sake of simplicity, I shall refer to free and bound morphemes alike as “words.” 1 in Southwestern China today (Phan, Desousa: 2016). Using data of dialects mentioned by Phan and deSousa in their hypothesis, this study investigates initial nasalization in Ying-initial words in Southwestern Chinese Languages and in the 26 Sino-Vietnamese words. -

China, a country with a long history and a specific culture, has also a long and specific astronomy. Ancient Chinese astronomers observed the stars, named and distributed them into constellations in a very specific way, which is quite different from the current one. Around the Zodiac, stars are divided into four big regions corresponding with the four orientations, and each is related to a totem, either the Azure Dragon, the Vermilion Bird, the White Tiger or the Murky Warrior. We present a general pattern of the ancient Chinese constellations, including the four totems, their stars and their names. Keywords. China, constellations, mansions 1. Introduction Three enclosures, four symbols and twenty-eight mansions characterise the ancient Chinese constellations. This division of the starry sky began to appear in China before the Zhou and Qin dynasties. The three enclosures refer to three areas around the North celestial pole: the Purple Forbidden enclosure, the Supreme Palace enclosure and the Heavenly Market enclosure. The four symbols are distributed near the ecliptic Zodiac and the lunar orbit and are represented by four totems: the Azure Dragon of the East, the Vermillion Bird of the South, the White Tiger of the West and the Black Tortoise of the North. Every symbol was divided into seven sections which were know as mansions. -

Pictographs in early Chinese writing 3.1 The beginnings of Chinese writing1 The Chinese script appears as a fully developed writing system in the late Shang .dynasty (fourteenth to eleventh centuries BC). From this period we have copious examples of the script inscribed or written on bones and tortoise shells, for the most part in the form of short divinatory texts. Based on Jeffrey Wainwright, George Lansing Raymond, and Liu Xie’s theories, this study was conducted from four perspectives: theme, content, prosody structure and aesthetic features. The purposes of my thesis are to trace the originality of 160 folk songs in Shijing and 47 folk songs in Han yuefu , to illuminate the origin of Chinese folk songs and to demonstrate the secularism reflected in Chinese folk songs. My research makes contribution to the following four areas: it explores the relation between folk songs in Shijing and Han yuefu and compares the similarities and differences between them ; it reveals the poetic kinship between Shijing and Han yuefu; it evaluates the significance of the common people’s compositions; and it displays the unique artistic value and cultural influence of Chinese early folk songs. ii Acknowledgments I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor Professor Graham Sanders for his supervision, inspirations, and encouragements during my two years M.A study in the Department of East Asian Studies at University of Toronto.
