Safety and Inclusion for our Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer Residents

In , Anaheim’s City Council unanimously supported my request to issue proclamations for Day on May 22 and Pride Month in June. On Harvey Milk Day, leaders and allies within the LGBTQ community received both proclamations and joined us for a roundtable discussion to learn how the city can best support our LGBTQ residents.

Recommendations include:

 Provide LGBTQ cultural competency training to staff.  Create drop-in centers throughout the city where resources or services may be available to residents. Mayor Pro Tem Moreno presents Laura Kanter,  Enhance the collaboration between the LGBT Center and the director of policy, advocacy and youth programs at the LGBT Center, with proclamations recognizing Harvey Orange County Family Justice Center. Milk Day and Pride Month  Improve outreach services to homeless LGBTQ residents.  Incorporate more visual support for the LGBTQ community in city communications.

Our office will present these recommendations to the City Council and will also establish a District 3 LGBTQ Advisory Board. Board members would provide recommendations addressing the needs of LGBTQ residents. If you’re interested in serving, click here to for an application to be considered.

Providing Kindness to our Seniors

Anaheim has the largest senior population in the county as well as the most living in poverty. Our office engages with the seniors at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center on a quarterly basis. We hear their concerns, provide them updates and share resources. Topics vary from the open space adjacent to the community center to residents not feeling the city is providing the necessary support to seniors.

In June 2017, the City Council supported our proposal to reinstate the Senior Commission. The goal of this commission is to provide the City Council with recommendations on how to best address the needs of our senior population. Our District 3 appointment is Paul Vicknair. More recently, the Council unanimously approved efforts to address senior isolation as well as opportunities to engage with seniors in their neighborhoods.

Below are some city services beneficial to our senior residents:

 You Are Not Alone Program: Anaheim Police Department’s Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol check in on older residents who may be living alone. If the additional services are needed, volunteers may also make referrals to other agencies. To take part in this free program, please contact the Police Department at (714) 765- 1987 or [email protected].  Senior Wheels Transportation Program: This service is available to Anaheim residents 60 years of age and older. This service allows a resident to run errands within a 10-mile radius of their home. One-way rides are only $2 but need to be purchased in specific quantities. For more information, call (714) 765- 4511.  Anaheim Fire & Rescue Paramedic Membership Program: With an annual fee of $36, you can cover paramedic response costs for yourself, anyone who may reside with you or a visitor. To sign up for this program, call at (714) 765- 4060 or email at [email protected].
