Welcome to Winter Thunderland

A paradise for fans of the perfect drift: when Volkswagen lines up at the Rally Sweden, it will do so at the only rally of the season to be held completely on ice and snow. Sébastien Ogier/ Julien Ingrassia (F/F), Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) and Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N) come into round two of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) with the wind in their sails. The three Volkswagen duos arrive in the recently-covered host region of Värmland on the back of a historic one-two-three for the Polo R WRC at the recent Rally Monte Carlo. As first, second and third in the overall standings, they now have the honour of opening the route.

All three can look back proudly on their past records at the Rally Sweden: Ogier/Ingrassia are the only Central European pairing FIA World Rally Championship 05 ever to have won in both Sweden and Finland in the same year – in 2013 with the Polo R WRC. For Latvala/Anttila, Sweden represents the only round of the WRC, at which they have already tasted victory on three occasions – their maiden suc- cess in the World Rally Championship in 2008, 2012 and most recently in 2014 with Volkswagen. Andreas Mikkelsen finished runner-up at the 2014 Rally Sweden to claim their very first podium result at the pinnacle of rallying.

“We have nothing but fond memories of the Rally Sweden and travel there with great anticipation every year,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “You never forget the rally, at which you claimed your very first win as a team. Back in 2013 it was one of the highlights of our dream start to the World Rally Championship with the Polo R WRC. Last year we witnessed some thrilling, all-Volkswagen battles for the victory and it was the first time all three of our drivers showed themselves to be on a par and capable of winning – including our ‘junior’, Andreas Mikkelsen. However, all that is history and, as is typical of Volkswagen, we will once again be going all out to taste suc- cess again in 2015. We are undefeated at the Rally Sweden, and would love it to stay that way.”

With power and slides – dream conditions in Värmland Few rallies are as popular with the Volkswagen drivers as the snowy routes of Sweden. The special Sweden spikes on the narrow Michelin tyres generate greater grip on the ice and snow than the crews are used to experiencing on gravel. Tyre lottery like the one seen at the Rally Monte Carlo? No chance. The only option is this one type of tyre. 06 Technology

The Polo R WRC, Version 2.0

The World Championship winning Polo has a younger brother: the new Volkswagen Polo R WRC for the 2015 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) shares the same genes as its predecessor, but has been painstakingly further developed in many areas. While the new blue, blue, white appearance of the production- based shell represents a visual revolution, the optimisation pro- cess under the bonnet was at the heart of the precise evolution. The Volkswagen engineers meticulously inspected 75 per cent of the car that won the championship in 2013 and 2014, seeking out any potential for improvement and gradually pushing ahead with its further development. As well as the complete optimisa- tion of larger modules – such as the sequential gearbox with shift paddles, which is permitted again in 2015 – the chassis and engine of the Polo R WRC have also taken another step forward FIA World Rally Championship 07 technologically, thanks to the sum of many detailed improve- ments made ahead of the 2015 season.

“When developing the first Polo R WRC, our priority was first to develop a fast car, which we then gradually improved until it was also reliable,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “This philosophy proved its worth, and has also been applied to the evolutionary further development of the second genera tion of the Polo R WRC. When we started to improve our World Championship winning car, we did so from an outstand- ing basis. Our engineers went about their work meticulously and with absolute commitment, and the result makes a perfect impression. We are excited to see how our World Rally Car fares against the opposition.”

Getting a shift on – new shift-paddle gearbox Like its predecessor, the 2015 version of the Polo R WRC is based on the same basic car – the roadworthy Polo R WRC. While the principle idea behind the development process was one of evolution, one component was very much the exception: the shift-paddle gearbox, which is permitted again in 2015. This represents a new development in every sense.

In the future, the driver will no longer exert energy shifting gear by pushing and pulling the gear lever. From now on, he will change gear using a shift paddle, which is permanently incorporated in the steering column and electronically conveys the gear change to the hydraulic gearbox. The major benefit: from now on, the driver can always have both hands on the steering wheel. 08 Technical specifications

Andreas Mikkelsen on Rally Sweden “I start third on the first couple of days, and the first drivers out will have a disadvantage if there is a lot of snow on the route. As such, Sébastien, Jari-Matti and I are obviously hoping that the roads are icy, rather than covered in snow. Rally Sweden Facts and figures

The event w ally S eden R 12/02–15/02 The Rally Sweden was first held in 1950 and Volkswagen Polo R WRC was called “Rally to the Midnight Sun” – with start and finish at separate locations. Since 1967 both start and finish have been located in Karlstad. The sur- face conditions of the Rally Sweden usually consist of ice and snow. Selecting the right tyres therefore is not an issue at all – there is only one type available for the teams: studded winter tyres.

The venue The airport in Hagfors will serve as the hub for the Rally Sweden again this year. The total distance of the rally is 1,441.57 kilo metres, whereby the teams are timed over 308.00 kilometres (last year: 323.54 kilometres). The finish will be in Karlstad with the podium ceremony taking place at the city’s main square.

The country Capital Stockholm Area 449,964 square kilometres Population 9.64 million Language Swedish Currency Swedish Krona (1 Krona = 0,107 Euros) Time zone UTC+1

The typical weather The Rally Sweden is the only real winter event on the WRC calendar and therefore unique in its kind. Drivers and cars face extremely cold temperatures. Rally Sweden 21

The route About one third of the competitive special stage kilometres are new compared to the 2014 edition. The start of the rally will take place in Karlstad on Thursday evening. On Friday the rally will visit Norway: Röjden, Finnskogen in reversed direc- tion and Kirkenær. The day will close with a second run on the Super Special Stage in Karlstad. The classic stages Fredriks- berg, Rämmen and Vargåsen with its famous Colin’s Crest as well as the short Hagfors Sprint form the competitive sections of Saturday. On Sunday the stage Lesjöfors will be run before Värmullsåsen – its second run will feature the final Power Stage.

Food & drink Swedish cuisine, like that of other Scandinavian countries, is traditionally simple. Fish, meat, potatoes and dairy products play prominent roles. Famous dishes are Swedish meatballs, traditionally served with gravy, boiled potatoes and lingonberry jam. The traditional flat and dry crisp bread has developed into several contemporary variants and is popular around the globe. Although traditional Swedish dishes are still a very important part of everyday meals, modern day Swedish cuisine adopts many international dishes as well.

Speed limit The current speed limit is very well marked by signs. The stand- ard speed for roads outside built-up areas is always 70 kilo- metres per hour unless otherwise indicated. All cars in Sweden must have their headlights on at all times. 22 Rally history

Rally Sweden History

At a glance

The winners of the “1st International Swedish Rally” were local heroes Per-Fredrik Cederbaum/Bertil Sohlberg.

Tradtionally the only rally that is always held on snow, the Rally Sweden is the home turf for rally drivers from Sweden, Norway and Finland. The only non-Nordic driver, who has won in Sweden and Finland in the same season was Sébastien Ogier in 2013.

Since 1950, the Rally Sweden was only missing three times from the international rally calendar: it was cancelled in 1974 due to the energy crisis and in 1990 because of too Rally Sweden 23

mild weather. In 2009, the Rally Sweden did not take place due to the FIA Rotation System.

The Volkswagen Group brands Audi and Porsche are among the most successful manufacturers in the history of the Rally Sweden. Between 1981 and 1984 the Audi quattro was the winning car. Porsche has eight wins to its name (1952–1955, 1963, 1968–1970).

To honour the late Colin McRae (GB), the organisers of the Rally Sweden hand out an award for the longest jump over a crest on the Vargåsen stage. The winners of the award since 2008: (UAE), Marius Aasen (N), (USA), Ott Tänak (EST), (B) and Sébastien Ogier.

In 2014 Sébastien Ogier travelled a massive 41 metres through the air before landing after the infamous “Colin’s Crest” jump – new record. In doing so he eclipsed the previ- ous best, set by American Ken Block, by a full four metres.

Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) seem to feel comfortable on the icy and snowy Swedish routes. The Finnish duo won the Rally Sweden in 2008, 2012 and last year in Volkswagen colors. In 2010 and 2011 they finished third, 2013 the duo came in fourth.

Last year, Volkswagen driver Andreas Mikkelsen claimed his first ever podium result in the FIA World Rally Champion- ship finishing runner-up behind team mate Latvala. 24 Rally map Rally Sweden 25 26 Rally schedule

Typical Volkswagen

The World Rally Championship commitment sees Volkswagen come full circle: the FIA World Rally Championship is the most important and highest-ranked racing series, in which production-based cars are used. Maintaining a close association with production products has always been an integral part of V olkswagen’s motorsport strategy.

Beetle goes America In 2014, Volkswagen of America has joined forces with US racing specialists Andretti Autosport to form the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Team. The Rallycross Beetle with four-wheel drive, a TSI engine generating more than 560 hp (412 kW) is driven by Tanner Foust and Scott Speed, who finished third overall in the 2014 season. Excitement and pure racing are guaranteed. Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen brand 31

Battles, drifts and rock ’n’ roll Since the 2014 season, Volkswagen Motorsport has an exclusive three-year partnership with Swedish rallycross team Marklund Motorsport in the World Rallycross Championship. It was a successful debut season for the Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar: number one driver Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen finished second, his Swedish team mate Anton Marklund sixth in the overall classifi- cation. Next stop: the 2015 season with more battles, drifts and rock ’n’ roll – powered by Volkswagen.

Success bred through tradition: Volkswagen and Formula 3 Not only in Formula V but also later as engine supplier in Formula 3 from 1979 until nowadays, Volkswagen always focusses on sup- porting young drivers leading towards big careers in Formula One, Le Mans or DTM. Motorsport legends like Michael Schumacher, Tom Kristensen or Bernd Schneider are among the big names. Also current talents as Felipe Nasr, Daniel Ricciardo, junior, Jean-Eric Vergne or Max Verstappen took their first steps in a Volkswagen powered single-seater in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship or British Formula 3 Championship. 32 Websites

GTI: Volkswagen’s sportiest Polo

With the Polo R WRC, Volkswagen has become involved in motorsport in the world championship that is most like series vehicles – the World Rally Championship. Its genes can also be found in Volkswagen’s product portfolio. Such sporting auto mobile icons have the initials “GTI” at Volkswagen – for example, the Polo GTI, whose new generation made its debut at the Paris motor show last year. The new Polo GTI comes with a multitude of technical innovations – from a 192 hp EU-6 engine to the infotainment system with MirrorLinkTM.

The latest addition to the GTI series, with an impressive 141 kW/ 92 hp from a 1.8-litre TSI engine is 9 kW/12 hp more power- ful than its predecessor. The “young wild one” sparkles with a driving performance typical of GTI. In only 6.7 seconds, the Polo Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen brand 35

GTI accelerates from zero to 100 km/h, its top speed peaks at 236 km/h. A maximum torque of up to 320 Nm ensures agility no matter what happens on the road. Meanwhile, the extreme efficiency of the Polo GTI can be seen in its consumption data: the Polo GTI with DSG uses 5.6 litres every 100 km (129 g/km

CO2) while the version with a manual 6-speed gearbox needs

6.0 litres every 100 km (139 g/km CO2).

Standalone bumpers, red GTI emblem, distinctive side skirts and the rear spoiler unique to the GTI make the Polo GTI distinctive at first sight. A sport chassis, 17 inch alloy wheels and fog lights also come as standard. In the interior, a sporty steering wheel, the combination instrument and sporty seats in the style of the larger Golf GTI testify to its sporting genes.

The driving experience in the Polo GTI is even more dynamic with the new optional “Sport Select” chassis (electronically adjustable dampers) with the “Sport Performance Kit”. At the touch of a button, the chassis, gearbox, engine sound and steering are tuned to be more agile. LED main highlights are optional.

The infotainment pallet has also been completely redesigned, with three radio CD systems and a radio CD navigation system. Depending on the version, the devices come with functions such as Bluetooth audio streaming (in conjunction with a smartphone incl. cover display and touchscreen control), a parking sensor and connecting a mobile phone to the external antenna of the vehicle via an inductive interface. MirrorLink also lets you use special smartphone apps via the touchscreen. 36 Partners
