access Flickr. clinical specialist at the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries in New York, has advice for helping students stay warmed up during Kaleidoscope long, and often unpredictable, days.

Adventures is a Start with a heart-pumping warm-up Member of: Before stretching, increase what Richardson calls students’ “global warmth”–– blood flow, body temperature and heart rate. The first 10 to 15 minutes of any warm-up should consist of low- impact activities that quickly boost pulse rates. “Jumping jacks seem kind of lame, but there’s a reason why you did them in gym class when you were 7,” says Richardson. She also suggests squats while reaching arms to the ceiling and leg swings with oppositional arms. “You should include arms as much as possible––at heart level or above,” she says. “That way, the heart has to pump the blood against gravity. It’s the fastest way to improve core temperature.” Richardson says students should not start stretching until they’re sweaty.

Save static stretching for later “If you start by sitting in a straddle, you’re actually hindering your Interested in High performance,” says Richardson. Holding positions for more than Profit Fundraisers? 30 seconds will lengthen muscles, but that makes it difficult for them to work properly if students are about to perform. “You need Click Here: strength to actually get your leg up there, and you can’t do that when your muscles are as gooey as caramel,” she says. Instead, focus on dynamic stretching like yoga sun salutations and walking lunges. Then move on to any dance-oriented preparations you want them to do, such as pliés and foot exercises.

Stretch after all dances are finished Now is the time that students can stretch statically to increase flexibility and prepare for Day Two. “Lengthening the muscles now gives them time to repair before another day of competing,” says Richardson. “And it’s essential to keeping the body a healthy tool."
