GREENSIDE HIGH SCHOOL Newsletter

VOLUME 1: February 2015 Dear Parents, Students and Staff At last: Volume 1 of 2015! A server upgrade, with inevitable associated systems disruptions, and load shedding have delayed its publication somewhat, but certainly meant it’s now bursting with vital information about the new school year and news of events that have already taken place. To start with, while you’ve been attending formal high school classes for three weeks, we especially want to welcome our Grade 8s to our GHS community. May attending Greenside bring you great personal reward and growth. We welcome, too, a number of new staff (more on them over the page). As always, we began the year with a bang, with another hugely successful inter-house gala, an exciting and grounding orientation week for the Grade 8s, and a visit from the Honourable Minister Masutha, Minister of Justice. We are also of course delighted with our class of 2014’s results. Congratulations. We are very proud! It has not been an easy or happy start of the year for all of our community. We extend our heartfelt condolensces to the Hicks family on the loss of their husband and father, Lloyd Power Hicks, a very familiar face on campus and particularly at cultural events. And we say a very sad farewell to Ms van Wyk, who is having to retire a year earlier than planned, due to ill health. Our love, prayers and thoughts are with you all.

New Staff

While it was with great sadness that we bade farewell to members of our staff at the end of 2014, as they headed for other shores, new adventures, or days of (greater) leisure, we extend a very warm welcome to our new staff.

Joining us in the Maths Department are Ms R Loh, Mr S Richter, and Ms E Uys.

Mr M Channon joins us to teach Social Sciences and History, and Ms L Hastie, not an entirely new face, forms part of the teaching contingent in the Physical Sciences and Natural Sciences departments.

Mr C Strauss joins Creative Arts and Dramatic Arts.

The English Department gains Mr R Janse van Vuuren, also not entirely new to GHS, and Ms S Zoghby.

Our administration team is also bolstered, with the additions of Ms N du Preez (Administration), Ms O Jenkins-Ramabulana (Alumni and Fundraising), Mr S Ntumba (Financial Assistant), and Mr H Sass (Financial Assistant). We welcome Mr J Ngwenya and Ms B Nhleke, too, to our sports department.

We wish you many happy and fulfilling years at GHS!

Accounts

The school fee for the 2015 school year is R28,500 per learner. The first payment of R3,000 should have been made at re-registration or on or before 30 November 2014.

The balance of R25,500 of the school fee is payable in ten, monthly instalments of R2,550, the first payment should have been made on or before 31 January 2015, and the last, on or before 31 October 2015.

School fees are payable only by the following two methods:

a) 10 post-dated cheques that must be attached to the supplied undertaking form. b) debit order, in which event the parents/guardians are requested to complete the supplied debit order form.

Discounts

Parents who settled their accounts in full on or before 30 December 2014, and who paid in cash or by cheque, were entitled to a discount of R1,275 per learner (i.e. paid a total of R27,225).

Absence from School

Any time spent away from school will hamper your child’s academic progress. We urge you to make every effort to ensure that your child is at school.

Appointments

Should a child have to be collected for a special appointment during school hours, the form teacher must be informed in advance. No learner will be permitted to leave the school premises without being signed out by a parent. The learner must come to the front office at the agreed time. No announcement will be made to call a learner out of class.

Absenteeism

After a learner has been absent, even if only for one day, parents are requested either to send an explanatory note to the relevant form teacher on the learner’s return, or to phone the front office on the day the learner stays home.

PAGE 7 Security

Learners should be careful with their possessions, and should mark all clothes and bags.

Cellphones, iPods and any other equipment used by a learner during class time – in contravention of the school’s Code of Conduct – will be confiscated for one week. A parent or legal guardian will be required to collect the item from the front office. The item will not be returned to the learner.

For reasons of both safety and security, learners are discouraged from walking to and from school with earphones in their ears. We are concerned that learners be alert to any traffic or other potential danger. Uniform and Hair

Kindly familiarise yourself with the Code of Conduct, a copy of which has been issued to, and should be carried at all times by, each learner. We ask parents to assist in ensuring that their children arrive appropriately dressed. A zero tolerance policy will be adopted towards those who violate the rules. The school strives to be one of which its learners are proud. Let us wear our uniform smartly and adopt a positive attitude to our image. If you are in uniform out in public, both your blazer and tie are required to be worn at all times.

Punctuality, and dropping off or collecting of learners

Please be advised that Geers Avenue and Coetzer Street become a one-way in the morning, from 07h00 to 08h00. Please do not allow your children to disembark before the car has pulled into a designated parking or stopping area.

Kindly do not block access to the front gate to the main car park. This congestion causes delays and becomes a hazard for the learners. The back gate is open from 06h00 until 07h40 only. Kindly do not block access to the back gate, or the cul-de-sac that leads onto it. Just as with the front gate, this is a thoroughfare. At 07h40 sharp the gate will be closed. The gate will be opened as school ends and closed 20 minutes later.

All learners who are not involved in an extra-mural activity must vacate the school premises twenty minutes after the closing time of school or make use of Online (open until 16h00) or the Media Centre (now open until 17h00). For the purpose of their own safety, learners may not linger on either the school grounds or in surrounding streets.

Arriving late for school, especially on a regular basis, causes learners to start each day in a stressed frame of mind and impacts adversely on their classmates and educators.

Tuckshop

The tuckshop is open from 06h00 and closes half an hour after the last bell, every day.

Top Achievers of 2014

We are extremely proud of you!

A Word from Ms Whyte

As a school we are proud of our consistent inclusion in the list of top government schools. Holding onto this reputation is no easy task given all the challenges that face us on the educational front. As a school’s success will always be judged primarily on its matric results, it is always a relief to report that once again we have exceeded expectations in this regard, with our 2014 Matric group performing a lot better in the finals than they sometimes did in the course of their year.

I am particularly pleased by the fact that 80 percent of our learners qualified for university entrance, with 96 percent of the 2014 group eligible for further education at higher institutions of learning. Distinctions tallied at 163 and I have no doubt that this total will increase with the re- marks, as there are so many learners with 78 and 79 percent averages.

Every school relies on its handful of academic stars whose distinctive performances fill us with pride and bring welcome publicity:

Lealon Forbay, Jade Peters, Ahmed Karani, and Lerato Mashishi, achieved five distinctions each. Lealon’s excellent results throughout his schooling were maintained in his finals. Lealon has been accepted to study Medicine at Wits. Lerato had a most demanding set of subjects and is to be complimented on her 82% for Maths, 85% for Life Sciences and 92% for Accounting. She plans to study a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting Science at Wits University. Ahmed achieved distinctive results in Afrikaans, Maths, Life Orientation, Accounting, and Information Technology, and there is hope for further distinctions. Ahmed plans to study a BSc Computer Science at Wits University. Jade achieved distinctions in Afrikaans, Maths, Life Orientation, Accounting, and Computer Applications Technology. We are confident that her 78% for English will improve with the re-mark. Jade plans, like Lerato, to do a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting Science at Wits.

Sameel Ambaram achieved six distinctions: English 82%, Afrikaans 81%, Maths 86%, Accounting 91%, Science 82%, Life Orientation 92%, and with 78% for EGD, Sameel could well be celebrating seven distinctions in the not-too-distant future. Sameel will be studying Actuarial Science at Wits University.

Mohammed Shezaad Cassim also achieved six distinctions: English 91%, Afrikaans 83%, Maths 84%, Computer Applications Technology 86%, Geography 81%, and Life Orientation 89%. He will be pursuing an LLB at UCT.

Hishaam Khan is another six distinction achiever: English 80%, Afrikaans 88%, Maths 86%, Information Technology 85%, Life Sciences 83%, and Life Orientation 87%. Sanil Lala achieved some phenomenal marks: 93% for Maths, 85% for Accounting, 87% for Engineering Graphics and Design, 91% for Life Sciences, 80% for Physical Sciences, and 90% for Life Orientation. Hishaam will be studying BCom Law at Wits.

Our Runner-up Scholar of the Year at the 2014 Valedictory Awards Assembly, Fatima Davids, excelled, with seven distinctions: English 86%, Afrikaans 90%, Maths 98%, Engineering Graphics and Design 96%, Life Sciences 96%, Life Orientation 87%, and a staggering 92% for Physical Science. With these results, Fatima could choose between no fewer than five universities. She was accepted at the University of the Free State, UCT, Stellenbosch, and she was offered a full scholarship at the University of Pretoria. She has chosen, however, to be close to her sister, Zahra, another GHS alumnus, and accepted the offer of a full scholarship at Wits, where she will study Medicine.

Our 2014 Head Boy and Honours blazer recipient did not disappoint with his eight-distinction record. Suleiman, once again, we salute you: English 83%, Afrikaans 86%, Life Orientation 94%, Maths 95%, Geography 89%, Information Technology 89%, Physical Science 81%, and 84% for Advanced Programme Maths. Suleiman plans to study Actuarial Science at Wits.

Congratulations to you all.

A Parent’s Thank You to GHS

An excerpt from a letter from Lealon’s mother, Trudy Forbay, to thank the school community for its role in Lealon’s education and life (adapted):

I wish to extend a heartfelt heartfelt thank you to the Grade 12 Grade Heads; the educators of the Class of 2014; Ms Whyte, the Principal; the SGB; and the staff at Greenside High for the quality learning afforded our son, Lealon Forbay, during his time at the school. Thank you to those educators who formed the basis of his learning in its initial stages. Their commitment and selfless serving of his and the other learners’ interests, are greatly respected and valued. …

We want to thank the school for allowing Lealon to be himself and to express the values we cling to at home, both in the classroom and on the field. As parents – and I am sure most parents feel this way – it was and continues to be, a challenge to send our children into a world where humility is not necessarily the flavour of the day; but instead self-promotion and self-sufficiency are the stings that are pulled to define success. As parents, we often conscientise Lealon and his sister, Kim, to choose humility, as it instils wisdom, patience and a generosity toward humankind. We therefore wish to acknowledge the school for helping us to raise wise children who are able to lead through serving others, and for guiding our children in understanding the need for a deep sense of humility.

And so in closing, we are appreciative to the Greenside community for Lealon’s excellent results, and in awe of God’s favour over his future. He has been accepted at the University of the Witwatersrand where he will be studying towards a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree. Your input in Lea’s life will remain precious and will be acknowledged in every milestone he achieves, through the grace of God.

We wish you and the staff at Greenside God’s speed! Thank you.

Kindest regards Trudy Forbay

19 January 2015 The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Honourable Michael Masutha, paid us a visit on Monday, 19 January. As part of the Parliamentary Oversight Functions, his visit was due to GHS’s being one of the top-performing schools in his constituency.

As well as a meet and greet with various members of the GHS community, he addressed the school as a whole so as to congratulate the students and to ‘thank the hard-working teachers who are the backbone of our system’.

Well done, Greenside. Keep it up this year!

City of Councillors, Sol Cowan and Joy Coplan, as well as Dr Cathy Motaung, Johannesburg Area Parliamentary Coordinator, were among the Minister’s delegation.

SAPS’s Search at GHS, 4 February 2015

We enjoy a respectful and constructive relationship with Parkview, SAPS, which makes the sensationalistic and irresponsible press coverage that followed the SAPS search at the school all the more regrettable. , accompanied by stock imagery of knives, by the national press of their search at the school, conducted on Wednesday, 4 February, all the more regrettable. A number of Parkview SAPS officers and administration staffs’ children attend GHS, and on rare occasions when the school is locking up and a child is still awaiting his or her transport, the officers of the Parkview station have provided a safe collection point. Once or twice a year, over many years now, GHS invites SAPS to visit the school, the searches acting as regular reminders that illicit substances and the like are not welcome.

The search this year was initiated by SAPS and facilitated by Mr Bouwer. For the rest of us, it was unannounced. The search and its outcome can only be regarded as successful. The search itself was certainly stressful for some – not because they had anything to fear, but because such events are by their nature anxiety provoking, and this search was especially comprehensive and lengthy. Each student was hand searched, and each bag was sniffed by a dog. The student body was encouraged to hand over any drugs or weapons voluntarily rather than wait until they were found by police, and so anxious were some of the children, that their form teachers were to be seen clutching fistfuls of ‘surrendered’ forks, allergy and epilepsy medication, multivitamins, and in one instance, rooibos tea – just in case!

It is fair to say of any school anywhere in today’s world that the fact that NO drugs whatsoever were discovered is cause for relief and celebration, of a sort. Two packets of cigarettes were confiscated, and five pocket knives were handed voluntarily to officers once the appeal to do so was made. Sgts Phoko and Ramovho of Parkview have both confirmed that no knives were found concealed on a student; all were volunteered to the officers. There is also nothing to indicate that any of the knives was intended to be a weapon: at least two were pocket knives, with one of them being discovered by a girl in her dad’s laptop bag which she happened to have for the day. The fact that we offer Electrical Technology as a subject should go some way to explaining the presence of knives on learners!

We have seen the formal SAPS press release that was sent to the media, and it is entirely in the tone of the search itself, ending with thanks to both staff and students for their ‘cordial reception’ of SAPS and the response to the search. Sadly, the national press chose to ignore the positive outcome and tone and sensationalise the facts of the search.

The silver lining in the reporting is that, apart from offering the English Department a chance to illustrate emotive language in very relatable terms, so many students felt moved to post comments in response in the school’s defence. Largely well articulated and appropriate, it was a pleasure seeing that surge of Greenside pride.

Ms Whyte and members of the School Governing Body met with officers from Parkview, SAPS, to address issues arising from the search, and GHS and SAPS will be issuing a joint press statement.
