2015-16 RECAPS

Saturday, November 21 – Ottawa 4, Flyers 0 at Canadian Tire Centre: The Flyers had 36 shots on goal and 81 total shot attempts, but they couldn’t find the back of the net for the second consecutive game and fell 4-0 to Ottawa. The Senators gathered goals from four different players in the latter minutes or early minutes of all three periods, and Craig Anderson stopped all 36 shots for his second consecutive shutout. Steve Mason turned aside 27 in the loss. Stars of the Game: 1 – Craig Anderson; 2 – Mike Hoffman; 3 – Bobby Ryan.

Tuesday, December 1 – Flyers 4, Ottawa 2 at Canadian Tire Centre: After a see-saw affair over about the first 30 minutes of the game, the Flyers pulled away on a goal by Wayne Simmonds with 3:25 to play in the second and took a 4-2 decision over the Senators for their third win in a row. The teams traded goals around the first intermission – Shayne Gostisbehere scored with 5:33 left in the first period and Zack Smith tied it less than three minutes later, and then a goal by Evgeny Medvedev 3:14 into the second period was neutralized by Mike Hoffmann 66 seconds afterwards. Simmonds put the Flyers up for good with his goal later in the frame, and then Sean Couturier iced things with an empty netter in the final two minutes. Steve Mason made 23 saves to pick up the win, while Craig Anderson stopped 29. Stars of the Game: 1 – Steve Mason; 2 – Zack Smith, 3 – Wayne Simmonds.

Saturday, April 2 – Flyers 3, Ottawa 2 at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers scored three power play goals, two of which came from Wayne Simmonds, and rode that to a 3-2 victory over the Senators. Then with 8:46 left in the period, Sean Couturier put home a rebound on another power play to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead. Nika Zibanejad cut it to a one-goal game with just over two minutes left in the second, but Simmonds got that goal back 7:15 into the third period. The Senators got one more, a power play goal from Mike Hoffman, but Steve Mason shut things down from there on the way to a 33-save victory. Andrew Hammond stopped 33 in a losing cause. Stars of the Game: 1 – Wayne Simmonds; 2 – Brayden Schenn; 3 – Mike Hoffman.

LAST GAME Saturday, November 12: Flyers 3, Minnesota 2 at Wells Fargo Center – Brayden Schenn scored a power play goal 8:43 into the third period that stood up as the game winner as the Flyers recovered from an early Minnesota tally to beat the Wild 3-2. Nino Niederreiter put Minnesota on the board just 21 seconds into the game, after which Brandon Manning tied things up with 7:33 left in the first on a slapshot through traffic from the left point. The Wild took another lead with just over 8 ½ minutes left in the second when Mikael Granlund cleaned up a loose puck in front, but again the Flyers answered before the break – this time on the first of the year for Michael Del Zotto, which came off a feed from Michael Raffl with 2:15 left in the second. Schenn’s goal was the only one of the third, and Steve Mason was able to hold Minnesota off the rest of the way – including a lovely toe save with about five seconds remaining. Mason took the win in relief, stopping 19 of 20 over the final two periods after Michal Neuvirth left the game with an unspecified injury; Neuvirth stopped six of seven in his 20 minutes of action. Devan Dubnyk turned aside 33 of 36 in absorbing the loss. Stars of the Game: 1 – Michael Raffl; 2 – Wayne Simmonds; 3 – Brayden Schenn.

The Warburg, Alberta native led UND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in the country during that span. North Dakota won three regular-season conference titles under Hakstol (WCHA 2008-09 and 2010-11; NCHC 2014-15). He also led UND to four WCHA playoff titles (05-06, 09-10, 10-11 and 11-12). 46 of Hakstol’s players at UND played professionally in 2014-15 and 20 played in the NHL, including Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks and Matt Greene of the Los Angeles Kings. UND produced a total of 42 NHL draft picks during Hakstol’s tenure, including eight first-round picks.
