Volume 50 April 2017 No 3 The Presidents Report Scott Dargan We have certainly had some great fishing weather and conditions during March and early April, however it seems that the weather is turning somewhat as we move into the second quarter of the year. Not that this will deter many of our sturdy fly fishing folk. In relation to Committee activity, most of our focus continues to be on the preparations for the clubs 50th Anniversary and don't forget that tickets for the dinner are now on sale. To purchase your tickets you will need to attend a club meeting as per the details included in recent e-mail correspondence. The Committee has also been busy finalising the details for the new carpet in the Clubrooms which is to be unveiled very soon. Colin McMillan is busy working on an exciting initiative that involves recording live interviews with a number of our life members about their time at Southern. The responses to the questions being asked are quite interesting, with Max Kepert emerging as a real star. The end production will certainly be something to look forward to. The Committee also discussed succession planning once again and I again encourage anyone who is interested in joining the Committee to step forward and let us know. It is evident that the next year will see a significant change in terms of Committee membership with 5 key roles becoming vacant. In terms of fishing activity during the last month there have been a couple of trips to the Steavenson River, which turned out to be great fun for some of our newer members. I also believe that fish were caught which was of course an added bonus. Unfortunately our trip to Warburton planned for April 9 has to be postponed due to the weather. We don't like to cancel trips, however we do take our members safety very seriously. The next trip that we have planned is to the Moorabool Reservoir on Sunday the 30th of April. I know that a large number of trips are also about to appear on the trip wall spanning from now until the end of the year. I look forward to seeing you at tomorrow's members night with the speaker being Lance Lloyd, Chairperson, Translocation Evaluation Panel, Fisheries .

4 “Charles Bradley” Flies for Sale You may have noticed the new fly boxes on top of the fridge in the clubrooms? Fly boxes is a bit of an understatement, you will understand if you have seen them recently. These new display cabinets contain a vast array of flies that the club managed to secure at a preferential rate. The usual donated flies will also be located in these display cabinets, so will still be able to get yourself a genuine Max Kepert fly. The flies are for sale at a price of $1.50 each. Please see Steven Clements or Paul Harris for payment on the night.

Regular Fly Tying Group The regular fly tying group meets on the third Thursday of the month. The intent is for those who are interested in meeting regularly to tie flies, learn from others, demonstrate a new pattern or simply talk fly tying. Note that the club will not be supplying any materials; it is the responsibility of people attending to bring along all they need, although the clubs vices will be available for use. For further information please contact Paul Harris on 0412 774 123.

5 Steavenson River – Midweek Trip Ray Boast Five keen SFF members arrived at Buxton at 9.00am in what promised to be a fine warm day on the local rivers. It was good to see a couple of newer members in Rob Casamento and Adrian Hughes, as well as some longer standing stalwarts in Judy Cameron and Malcolm Green. Beats were selected on the Steavenson for the morning session and after first removing a fly from Malcolm’s index finger (!), we headed to a clear river running at 14°C. Despite the pleasant conditions and the odd fish rising, fishing proved a little difficult but Judy managed a nice small rainbow on a dry fly after demonstrating some copybook casting. Malcolm tried some innovative rigs including a stick caddis under a dry/indicator, but the fish remained elusive. The tally at the lunch break back at Buxton was three fish, all on dry flies, and the plan of attack for the afternoon session was for Adrian and Rob to head up to the Taggerty whilst the remaining three went downstream to the of the Acheron and Steavenson. The tables turned in the afternoon as Adrian and Rob picked up five and three fish respectively, and they thoroughly enjoyed the dry fly fishing in more difficult but rewarding sections of the Taggerty – well done guys. Meanwhile the lower Steavo and Acheron proved less successful but no less enjoyable as the weather warmed up. Although there were a few follows and rises, no fish were landed. Malcolm enjoyed the sunny conditions and ambience of the Acheron so much that he remained on the banks until late afternoon. A pleasant day in good company - come along to the next SFF mid-week trip and catch some quiet waters, and some fish.

The awesome foursome ready for the afternoon session at Buxton.

6 Steavenson River – Weekend Trip Tony Hyett 10 a.m. being the starting time to meet at the river opposite the Buxton trout farm. This later time made it easier for the members to get out of bed a little later to join in the festivities of the day. This later time turned out to not make any difference to the fishing. Allan Russell and myself travelled together with Ivo Kavelj and Vlad Mezin arriving in separate cars. After waiting till 10.30am and us being the only attendees we decided to shoot of and catch fish. Ivo and Vlad took off to the Taggerty catching three of four fish each for the day. The water flow was a little low at the Taggerty making fishing quite a bit easier than trying to battle fast flowing water around large boulders on a high flow day. Allan Russell and I fished the Rubicon also catching a few fish each. I decided it was time I explored below the surface of the water tumbling in backwards in about 18 inches of water, filling my waders with cold water after forgetting to put my belt on. Anyway all gear came off and I dried everything out in the warm sun. I did graze my leg, I thought not too badly which became infected a week later and only started clearing up with a dose of antibiotics. Teach me to dress a graze and add some benadine. Funny, on a Steavenson River trip the only time it was fished was by Allan the last hour of the day with no luck. The day was clear and sunny with water flows quite low but dry flies worked quite well. Ivo stating that the Taggerty is a river he will certainly return to. Fish on fellow members.
