Art versus Propaganda?: Georgia Douglas Johnson and Eulalie Spence as Figures who Fostered Community in the Midst of Debate Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Caroline Roberta Hill, B.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2019 Thesis Committee: Jennifer Schlueter, Adviser Beth Kattelman Copyright by Caroline Roberta Hill 2019 Abstract The Harlem Renaissance and New Negro Movement is a well-documented period in which artistic output by the black community in Harlem, New York, and beyond, surged. On the heels of Reconstruction, a generation of black artists and intellectuals—often the first in their families born after the thirteenth amendment—spearheaded the movement. Using art as a means by which to comprehend and to reclaim aspects of their identity which had been stolen during the Middle Passage, these artists were also living in a time marked by the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan and segregation. It stands to reason, then, that the work that has survived from this period is often rife with political and personal motivations. Male figureheads of the movement are often remembered for their divisive debate as to whether or not black art should be politically charged. The public debates between men like W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke often overshadow the actual artistic outputs, many of which are relegated to relative obscurity. Black female artists in particular are overshadowed by their male peers despite their significant interventions. Two pioneers of this period, Georgia Douglas Johnson (1880-1966) and Eulalie Spence (1894-1981), will be the subject of my thesis. -

The Origins and Development of English Folk Plays
National Centre for English Cultural Tradition University of Sheffield THE ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH FOLK PLAYS Volume 1 Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Ph.D. Peter Thomas Millington May 2002 ABSTRACT This thesis concerns those English folk plays whose plots are centred on the quack doctor character. Earlier researchers proposed three possible origins for these plays: a non-specific mystery play from the time of the crusades, some pre- Christian fertility ritual, and primitive shamanism. All three proposals were based on over-general comparisons, and relied on the key assumption that a continuous history can be traced back from before modern plays to the relevant era. However, in contrast with other customs, no evidence can be found for these plays before the 18th century, despite diligent searching. These theories are therefore disproved. Instead, it is proposed that the plays were attached in the early to mid 18th century to existing house-visiting customs. These were probably the source of the non-representational costumes that are sometimes worn. There is also evidence for the influence of the conventions of the English Harlequinade. The provenance of the scripts is unknown, but similarities between them suggest they ultimately derived from a single proto-text. A full-text database of 181 texts and fragments was built for investigation using cluster analysis, distribution mapping and other computerised techniques, some of which are novel. The cluster analysis has generated a new classification for the play texts that both confirms and extends the established typology. Comparison of the attributes of the clusters, aided by distribution mapping, has resulted in a putative genealogy for the plays that is presented for discussion. -

Between Liminality and Transgression: Experimental Voice in Avant-Garde Performance
BETWEEN LIMINALITY AND TRANSGRESSION: EXPERIMENTAL VOICE IN AVANT-GARDE PERFORMANCE _________________________________________________________________ A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theatre and Film Studies in the University of Canterbury by Emma Johnston ______________________ University of Canterbury 2014 ii Abstract This thesis explores the notion of ‘experimental voice’ in avant-garde performance, in the way it transgresses conventional forms of vocal expression as a means of both extending and enhancing the expressive capabilities of the voice, and reframing the social and political contexts in which these voices are heard. I examine these avant-garde voices in relation to three different liminal contexts in which the voice plays a central role: in ritual vocal expressions, such as Greek lament and Māori karanga, where the voice forms a bridge between the living and the dead; in electroacoustic music and film, where the voice is dissociated from its source body and can be heard to resound somewhere between human and machine; and from a psychoanalytic perspective, where the voice may bring to consciousness the repressed fears and desires of the unconscious. The liminal phase of ritual performance is a time of inherent possibility, where the usual social structures are inverted or subverted, but the liminal is ultimately temporary and conservative. Victor Turner suggests the concept of the ‘liminoid’ as a more transgressive alternative to the liminal, allowing for permanent and lasting social change. It may be in the liminoid realm of avant-garde performance that voices can be reimagined inside the frame of performance, as a means of exploring new forms of expression in life. -

The two phenomena under scrutiny, K\SHUXQGHUVWDQGLQJ and PLVXQGHUVWDQGLQJ, categorize as responsive conversational turns as they connect to a previously made utterance. Whereas hyper-understanding revolves around a speaker’s ability to exploit potential weak spots in a previous speaker’s utterance by playfully echoing that utterance while simultaneously reversing the initially intended interpretation, misunderstanding involves a genuine misinterpretation of a previous utterance by a character in the fictional world. Both cases, however, hinge on the differentiation of viewpoints, yielding a layered discourse representation. A corpus study based on the British television series %ODFNDGGHU reveals which pivot elements can serve as a trigger for hyper- and misunderstanding. Common to all instances, it is argued, is a mechanism ofILJXUHJURXQG UHYHUVDO. Key words: interactional humor, hyper-understanding, misunderstanding, layering, mental spaces, figure-ground reversal 2 ,QWURGXFWLRQ Recent studies in pragmatics (see e.g. Attardo 2003) have shown a renewed interest in humor as a valuable topic of interdisciplinary research. More specifically, these studies have extended the traditional focus of humor research on jokes to include longer narrative texts (Attardo 2001a, Triezenberg 2004) and conversational data (Boxer and Cortés-Conde 1997, Hay 2001, Kotthoff 2003, Norrick 2003, Antonopoulou and Sifianou 2003, Archakis and Tsakona 2005). New data from conversation analysis, text linguistics and discourse psychology present significant challenges to linguistic humor theories like the General Theory of Verbal Humor (Attardo 1994, 2001a), and call for (sometimes major) revisions. -

Para ello se tematizarán las nociones de communitas, habitus y acción ritual como marcos de organización de la experiencia y la cosmovisión; y asimismo de situaciones de colonialismo, sincretismo, crisis vitales y fricción grupal. Summary: The central purpose of this paper is to introduce a description and analysis of contingent ways of configuration of identities based upon the case of the Eastern Toba (Qom Taksek) from central Chaco (Argentina). Consequently, the concepts of communitas, habitus and ritual action are dis- cussed with regard to their function in framing the organization of experi- ence and world view, and likewise of situations of colonialism, syncretism, vital crisis and group’s friction. 1. Roots and foliages of communitas The main feature of ritual activity is what Goffman (1978) called “dramaturgical ac- tion”. In this context, the reference is neither to a lonely actor nor the member of a social group but the participants in an interaction constituting an audience for one another, a public before whom they present themselves.
