Resisting Change sinCe 1863! Some folks made a fortune here... But what they left behind is priceless.

All of Montana has the deepest pride and affection for Virginia City. No more colorful pioneer mining camp ever existed. Dramatic tales of the early days in this vicinity are legion. Rich placer diggings MONTANA’S TERRITORIAL CAPITAL were discovered in Alder Gulch in the spring of 1863 and the stampede of gold seekers and their parasites was on! Sluices soon lined the gulch and various “cities” blossomed forth as trading and amusement centers for free-handed miners. Virginia City, the best known of these and the sole survivor, became the Capitol of the Territory.

The very much alive ghost town, Virginia City, Montana, is frozen in time. It is a remarkably well-preserved Old West Victorian gold mining town just 50 miles west of Yellowstone National Park (90 miles by road). When the gold ran out, there was still enough left so that homes and businesses were occupied, but there was not enough wealth to remodel the buildings. So it froze, and now represents the whole Victorian era. Virginia City is the true and original Old West. It is a gem, held within an incredibly rich area of natural beauty, recreation and history. Come rediscover Virginia City & Nevada City, Montana!

This is only a very brief sketch of the great number Consequently, he was raised by his uncle on of projects in which Holter was involved. a farm where he remained until he was 17. Financially, politically and socially, his career At the age of 23, he came to the United shows distinct and unqualified success. He wanted to States by the way of Quebec, on his way to be involved with the advancement of Virginia City, Chicago. His stay in Chicago was brief and then the surrounding areas and Montana as a whole and the he was on to Freeport, Iowa, where he secured people that would carry on for future generations. work as a carpenter. Holter saved his money Evalyn Batten Johnson by judicious investments and then moved on to St. Louis, Mo., and on to Colorado and in the fall of 1863, joined Alex Evinson, who became his partner – they headed by wagon for the fast growing Alder Gulch. It took Holter and Evinson three months to make the trip and with them they brought a second hand small sawmill outfit intending to go into the lumbering business on reaching their destination. That temporary location was about 18 miles from Virginia City at Bivens and Ramshorn Gulches. In 1864, they started lumberyards in Virginia City and Nevada City. Lumber was bringing high prices and they found the demand was so great that whenever a wagon came Get the Good News! in, there was always a crowd and they would rush to the wagon to grab what they needed. It was always paid for. It was in 1864 also that Holter bought out his partner Evinson and took his brother Martin as partner and the firm became known as A.M. Holter and brother. That summer, he and Norelius and Olson built the water works for Virginia City. Piping and hydrants were made of logs. This was a difficult task as everything had to be invented and purchased in Denver, Colo., and brought on pack animals to Virginia City. Things never seemed to stop for Holter. In 1865, he purchased a secondhand planing mill, the first of its kind 682-7755 in Montana, as well as a steam engine and boiler and set it up on Ten Mile Creek, eight miles west of Helena. Things weren’t always positive for Holter. Ramshorn was up against the minters who needed the water for the gold rich gulch. Dangerous issues followed. Holter, upon coming to Virginia City, was shot by George Ives. Luckily, he turned and the shot went through his hat and hair. Lumber prices went down, there was a burning building and an explosion. He never gave up. Thursday, September 4, 2014 B7B7
