La primera d’aquestes entrades és del Shaun Tan, així que deixarem que sigui el mateix autor qui ens presenti l’obra: EMIGRANTES es un libro ilustrado sin palabras, una novela gráfica silenciosa. A través de una serie de imágenes conectadas, cuenta la historia de un emigrante anónimo que deja su país natal en penosas circunstancias, cruza un océano hasta una nueva ciudad y aprende cómo vivir en ella. La historia podría haber ocurrido en torno al año 1900, coincidiendo con las grandes corrientes migratorias de Europa hacia países como Australia y Estados Unidos. La mayor parte de mi investigación inicial se basó en historias autobiográficas recogidas por emigrantes tanto en este periodo como más recientemente; sin embargo, el mundo del libro surge, en última instancia, de referencias directas: mi interés como artista ha sido desplazar al lector con el fin de explorar mejor la idea de ser un inmigrante dentro de una cultura ajena. La ciudad donde se ilustran la mayoría de los sucesos es imaginaria; en ella, aspectos fundamentales como el idioma, el transporte, la comida, la vivienda y el trabajo son bastante extraños y, a menudo, surrealistas. Una de las razones fundamentales por las que decidí prescindir L’autor del texto fue destacar este principio: el protagonista no puede leer ni comprender nada, así que el lector tampoco debería poder. Confío en que mi libro se “lea” en parte, como una novela sobre inmigración, pero también que vaya más allá de cualquier cuestión social: que se entienda cómo las circunstancias pueden cambiar inevitablemente en la vida de todos nosotros, y cómo las personas aprenden a adaptarse y a aceptar las nuevas situaciones, sin importarles lo extraño o desconcertante que parecen al principio. 1 Shaun Tan: la seva obra La web de literatura infantil i juvenil Bienvenidos a la fiesta ( http://www.bienvenidosalafiesta.com/ ) ens parla de l’obra del Shaun Tan: El acercamiento al mundo de los álbumes del autor es distinto a lo habitual, tanto gráficamente como en contenidos: en ambas cosas se nota su procedencia de la ciencia-ficción. La Cosa Perdida es su primer álbum propio, y en él confiesa influencias de pintores como El Bosco y Hooper, y de ilustradores como Raymond Briggs y Edward Gorey . El Árbol Rojo es también especial pero tal vez será menos popular debido a su tema y sus características, que harán que guste mucho a unos y poco a muchos. Es magnífica la ilustración introductoria: atractiva e inquietante a la vez, mete dentro del lector el interés por acompañar Ilustración de La Cosa Perdida a la protagonista en su recorrido. Tanto el tono de las escasas líneas de texto, como el mismo hecho de que vaya en tipos de letra de máquina de escribir clásica, contribuyen a que aumente la tensión entre texto e ilustraciones, y transmiten la impresión como de mensaje de socorro. En los dos que se mencionan, sus poderosas ilustraciones, bien compuestas con colages y técnica mixta, son abigarradas e intensas, tienen claras influencias surrealistas y presentan un mundo amenazador y opresivo. También en los dos el autor consigue su intención de presentar una visión inusual de la vida cotidiana, de avivar en sus lectores «la conciencia de que estamos vivos en un planeta muy extraño». Emigrantes merece una consideración aparte pues no es un álbum sino una poderosa y singular novela gráfica. El autor dedicó cuatro años a recoger recuerdos y documentación, de su propia familia y de gente que pasó por circunstancias parecidas, y a confeccionar las ilustraciones de la historia. Estas aparecen en dibujos como de carboncillo pero fueron realizados después de un largo proceso de documentación, montaje y tratamiento por ordenador, a partir de antiguas fotografías de gente,

This and some other changes were approved at the first AGM on 2nd April. Thank you to those who attended and those who provided proxy forms. Thank you, too, to all who have sent in their membership renewals. It is wonderful to have 155 members, as well as ten institutional members. Another very happy announcement is the awarding of the first Honorary Life Membership to Dr Maurice Saxby. Maurice has supported IBBY in many ways, in particular as the only Australian to have served as a member of the HCA jury. (See details in the following pages). To be eligible to nominate candidates, the national section’s dues must be fully paid. And now for a moment of boasting: we have paid our dues to the Secretariat in Basel, from our modest membership fees and a few fundraising events, such as ICBDay celebrations. We do not intend IBBY Australia to be constantly engaged in fundraising, but these events have been a kick-start. We are proud to have reached this point. The piece presented here is an edited version of the keynote, with additional questions by Harriet Earle. This article is about how stories and books can cross boundaries and migrate across cultures. The invitation to write about this topic may be no surprise given my background and the kind of books that I create, typically dealing with these themes quite directly, although almost subconsciously as recurring objects of fascination: colonization, migration, translation, language difficulties and cultural differences, often featuring creatures with tentacles or strangely shaped heads, though arguably (hopefully) no less serious than any other presentation. It could actually be said that all artists and writers are preoccupied with these themes to different degrees, expressed in individual styles. The crossing of boundaries is, after all, fundamental to storytelling.
