Pirate Captains Lead in Cte Certs THE PALM BAY MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL 2020-21 WRAP UP • Newsletter for Our Students, Staff, Parents & Community • VOL. 21, NO. 1 INSIDE PIRATE CAPTAINS This Issue Principal’s Message LEAD IN CTE CERTS 2 Palm Bay Magnet High School’s amazing Black History scholar, Carson Brown, has earned a Celebration remarkable, 21 Career Technical Education, (CTE) industry-standard certifications. His 3 impressive haul of certifications includes: Student Spotlight AutoDesk Inventor Professional; AutoCAD Professional; SolidWorks Professional; 4 Adobe Certified Professional in Photoshop, Teacher Spotlight Illustrator and InDesign, as well as expert- level certifications in Microsoft Office Suite; 8 a Programmer certification in Unity; and TSA Engineering AutoDesk 3DsMAX Certified User. Carson was recently able to put a few 9 of his certifications to use in his internship Class of ‘21 at MBV Engineering where he works with Advice AutoDesk Civil 3D and a specialized version of AutoCAD. 11 Upon hearing of the incredible number MCJROTC of certifications Carson earned, a classmate Class of 2021 PBMHS student, Carson Brown was heard to exclaim, “Dude! PG 1 Pirate Gazette Message from Our Principal s we conclude another successful school year, I want to take a moment to thank all our Pirate Students, A Parents, Guardians, and Faculty and Staff for all of their dedication. This year has been like no other, and we persevered Our employees “stepped up” to the task, and our students answered the call as well. We did some great things at school this year. We saw Gazette individual and team achievements in athletics and academics. We continue to receive tremendous positive recognition as a Team school. Although this year was extremely challenging due to Mr. Jud Kaminski hybrid learning, virtual meetings, and covid contact tracing, ART DIRECTORS Principal, Palm Bay Kaniya Williams Magnet HS there was a clear expectation of academic instruction across Noah Almond campus, and our students benefitted from this intentional focus. AVID continues to gain strength at Palm Bay Magnet High School, as we LAYOUT DESIGN incorporated these strong learning strategies for the benefit of all our students. AND PRODUCTION Safety has also continued at the forefront of our daily routine. Collin Connors Student behaviors were significantly improved this year, and we possess a GRAPHIC DESIGN culture on campus that is extremely positive and promotes individual inclusion. The Tailen Brown school undertook and embraced PBIS, a positive behavior program geared toward Jovaniel Flores-Ruiz student choice with behavior, and we credit a great deal of our improved behaviors Joseph Parks toward these practices. Contact SOFET.JOAN@ BREVARDSCHOOLS.ORG Pirate Gazette 2021 Issue Published by Palm Bay Magnet HS 101 Pirate Lane Melbourne, FL 32901 2 BLACK HISTORY MONTH Pirate Gazette The month of February was filled with festive activities to honor the rich contributions African Americans have made to America’s history. Our celebration was kicked off with an exhibit in the Media Center, featuring Historically Black Colleges and Universities as well as The Divine Nine, Black Fraternities and Sororities. AVID students in grades 9 through 12 researched and created the entire exhibit. In addition, the Knights Commons came alive during a Chalk Art Celebration, honoring the many contributions of Black Americans. Friday, the last day of Black History Month, was celebrated with an open-air, Open Mic, held on Seminole Commons during the lunches. Music, songs, poetry and dance highlighted the day. Abbey Perez and Dante Miller emceed and rivaled any TV personalities. The students did a great job reciting both original and published poems and quotes, performing songs, and the infamous Pirate Divas showed their dance moves. Ms. Greta Williams did an outstanding job reciting her original poem “The Cry of a Black Child” complete in African attire. Our PBMHS students are amazingly talented! The culminating activity and honor was when the City of Palm Bay awarded PBMHS a proclamation honoring our celebration of Black History Month. Our award was accepted by Principal Kaminski, Ms. Dixon and Ms. Fox at a Palm Bay Council Meeting. Feel free to stop by the main office to see our award on display! Chalk Art Celebration Honoring Black Americans Knights Commons (outside the Media Center) came alive art in chalk and pastels. Students really enjoyed themselves when PBMHS students honored BLACK HISTORY MONTH by as they concentrated on their drawings while listening to recreating some famous the music of Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin. It was a African American works of fun Friday! Class of ‘21 Senior and multi-sport athlete, Mikyla Tolivert was just interviewed by Spectrum Sports. Her interview broadcast June 1st on Spectrum News 13. Mikyla, named Florida Today Girls Basketball Player of the Year, was a key player in PBMHS’ first-ever state championship game. She’s also a student scholar! Mikyla finished all her HS credits by Junior year, completed college courses this year, and now she’s headed to Georgia State. Coach Crowley was also in the interview, stating, “...what Mikyla is doing, she’s following her heart, doing what she loves and doing what she’s good at.” As the article reads, “Tolivert sets the tone for the future Palm Bay Pirates.” We’re feeling the Pirate Pride, Mikyla!     We are excited to grow our family and welcome your child into our Catholic family! We’ve been happily married for more than 10 years and have a loving, stable home. We have 4 boys and have adopted each of them, and hope to add to our family soon! We promise that your child will be loved, protected, and surrounded by family and friends who will cherish him or her unconditionally. We both knew very soon after we met that we had found that one special person we wanted to spend the rest of our life with. God is the center of our marriage and life, and will always be the center of our home and family. Our adopted children mean the world to us! Katie loves being a stay-at-home Mom and Dominic is eager to get home from work each day to see the kids. We have a special relationship with Jacob’s birth parents and keep in close contact with the family. Timmy’s birth mom chose a closed adoption but we think of her often and keep her in our prayers. Both Michael’s and David’s birth moms receive pictures and updates from us throughout the year. We’d be happy to keep in contact with you, if you wish! Between the two of us, we have 14 siblings and 64 nieces/nephews. We are very close to our families and get together with them frequently. That was the main point of guest speaker Sherry Colgan Stone in her recent active shooter presentation on the San Jacinto and Menifee campuses. The Active Shooter Awareness events took place last week on Sept. 10 and 11. Stone said she’s motivated to give these presentations because the first ten minutes of an active shooting are the most crucial. “Law enforcements have tactical training. We train them, but what about the educators? Nobody is teaching these students even though the first ten minutes they are on their own,” she said. During her presentations, Stone told students to be on the lookout for “PINs: Pre-incident Indicators.” She urged students to remember EBD: Escape, Barricade and Defend.     JAMES & SHERRI We love each other and have made a lifelong commitment to one another through marriage. We both grew up in a two-parent home and we want to provide the same for our child. Be- cause our vows are so sacred to us, we have participated in church marriage retreats, mini “staycations” (driving to a hotel about an hour away in another city and staying the weekend) and have declared family holidays where we take off work on our anniversary and birthdays. Our marriage is a love between two imperfect people who have the same purpose of heart to remain devoted to each other — “till death do us part” as we both stated in our wedding vows. About Adoption in the Family Our families are full of love and people who support one anoth- er. My aunt and uncle always wanted a little girl after they had already given birth to two wonder- ful sons. This lead to them adopt- ing a little girl and the entire fami- ly was so happy. She is our young- est cousin in my generation and my sister and I spent summers to- gether with her in NY when we were younger. This allowed me and my adopted cousin to have a unique opportunity to bond. She is aware that James and I are looking to adopt an infant and has been re- ally supportive. She has also offered to be available for our child when and if she/he has any questions or concerns about adoption. This is so very comforting for us because our child will have someone in the fam- ily who can relate to being adopt- ed.

    Denial Is Not A River In Egypt (posted June 7, 2006) My husband and I began attending Al-Anon in the summer of 2000, I at the advice of a close friend in the program, and he a few months later because of the positive changes he began to see in me. While I attended Al-Anon those first few months, he tended his beloved garden, trying to distract himself from the unmanageability of our lives. His flowers and veggies flourished, but his obsessing over our daughter, the alcoholic, only grew worse. Thus he began attending Al-Anon with me. Eventually we found separate meetings we preferred, his favorite being the Monday Night Men’s Only Al-Anon meeting at the Alano Club. Initially, we wondered if Al-Anon would work for us, since we are both atheists. Although Al-Anon is not a religious program, it does speak of a “Higher Power” and a “god of our understanding.” Over time, we came to realize that the meetings themselves are our Higher Power,” and that this viewpoint doesn’t conflict with the underlying principles of the program. We are grateful for the support the program offers and for the empathetic, honest and nonjudgmental people we have met. Like most in Al-Anon we found ourselves in a position we’d never imagined. We’d been “good” parents to our two children. Our son was successful in school, athletic, popular, loving – everything a parent could want. Our daughter had, from the outset, been plagued by physical ailments and, as she grew older, a variety of emotional and educational challenges.

As such, the text is organized around anthro- pological concepts such as language, kinship, marriage and family life, political and economic organization, food getting, spiritual and religious practices, and the arts. Prehistoric, historic and contemporary information is presented. Each chapter begins with an example from the oral tradition that reflects the theme of the chap- ter. Native Peoples of North America | vii Introduction The attempt to write any book, especially a textbook, about the histories and cul- tures of the indigenous peoples of what is now called North America is a daunting task. Similar to the continent of Europe, the histories and cultures of the peoples are diverse. It is readily accepted by both scientists and the general public that humans were in Europe over 40,000 years ago.
