BEER BARREL Ever been drinking with a bear? They can put it away like nobody’s business. Instead of offering to buy them a birthday bevvie in a bar, cut out the middleman and buy them a barrel of the stuff. FREEMASONS REMIX ALBUM Kylie! Kelly! Madge! Hands in the air! WAIT FOR THE DROP! Bears love a pop remix and they can bloody MOVE to them as well. Oh, em, gee. It’s time for East Bloc’s birthday again! We’ve barely recovered from the last one. We woke up on Old Street roundabout on top of an empty kebab box and Silver Summers. Let’s not go into it. ANYWAY this time round it’s set to be bigger than ever. FIVE YEARS. That’s a bit of a milestone isn’t it. After nearly 20 years of throwing some of London’s biggest and most outrageous parties, Popcorn stalwart, “Mother” and beloved promoter Chris Selby-Rickards aka “Big Gay Al” is retiring from club life and heading for foreign shores. So Popcorn are throwing him one hell of a leaving party on Monday 21st March! Before he gets too busy securing restraining orders from numerous Bondi Beach lifeguards, we asked him to take us through his tastiest Popcorn moments. In Mother’s own words, of course.

How did I get involved with Popcorn? Almost by accident actually! I had friends at Heaven (before I worked there) and it was a right time-right place scenario. Popcorn needed a dedicated promoter and I needed a job! What makes Popcorn unique? Many factors. Size: Given that it’s on a weekday! First time visitors are amazed at how busy it is and on a Monday night! Customers: I’ve always preferred a mixed ‘metrosexual’ crowd, doesn’t always work but 99% of the time it’s a fabulous melting pot of different people with large groups of friends out together, giving it a wonderful house party feel. Staff: I’ve always tried to have majority DJs, dancers and animation staff that don’t work elsewhere on scene. Approach: We have weekly large themes so every week is a special event. Not always an easy undertaking! We don’t take ourselves too seriously and there is always a lot of humour involved in everything we do. …and most of all… Music: Our main floor sound is unique on scene in London. When everyone else went deep/tech we stayed progressive/ “big room” sound. It served us well and continues to do so. What am I most proud of? Its longevity; 19 years and still going strong. I think that deserves respect! Funniest moment? After 15 years there have been so many, but I guess for me it was fracturing my ankle falling/almost flying off some giant platform stilettos, whilst drag queen racing through the club one night. Hurt like a cunt but it was so funny I laughed through the pain. Gin helped.

I love doing some of the larger annual events, particularly Halloween and Carnival. They take ridiculous amounts of planning, and stress the fuck out of me, but they are so enjoyable. I go into competition with myself to try and outdo the previous year – especially with Halloween, in with the ‘disgusting’ stakes. I’ve stopped just short of cadavers in the past. Dead animals are legal though, right? What’s next? A new life, new start and some adventure. I am going to Australia where hopefully I will marry a Hemsworth or at least blow one on a stunning beach somewhere. I’ll let you know! Anybody I’d like to thank? My god, too many to mention! To David Inches for giving me the job in the first place and teaching me everything I know. Thank you to everyone who’s put up with my diva dramas and had faith in my wacky ideas. Everyone who has supported and worked tirelessly to keep Popcorn at the top of its game. A ship might need a captain but needs it’s crew more. And lastly thank you to Jeremy. Whilst he owns the brand, he’s given me a free hand to run Popcorn how I wanted and always supported me even when he hasn’t agreed with me. Have I ever shagged a gogo dancer or DJ? Do I get my Oscar now? You won’t believe a word of this, but no! I have made some great friends but no lovers. Maybe I’ve missed opportunities…but frankly if you saw me naked you wouldn’t want to shag me either! Best Drunken Moment? I don’t drink any more. (I don’t drink any less either). Moons ago, one night, I decided I was too drunk to attempt going home so figured I should sleep it off in the office. I was discovered by one of the duty managers having made a nest under a desk and surrounded it with boxes etc to conceal myself. The shame! Most Embarrassing Moment I suffer terribly with anxiety, so I actually plan very cautiously to avoid embarrassing moments. But one time I was on stage, packed house, dressed as Big Gay Al, making some speech on the mic about something and some drunk twat stage invaded and pulled my trousers (and pants) down. 2000 people saw my penis. It was upsetting. Why am I such a cunt? Cause I am Mother. And Mother knows best! We also go to Iceland. Apparently.

Come bid Chris farewell at Big Al’s “Last Tango in Popcorn” on Monday 21st March at Heaven (Under The Arches, Villiers Street, London, WC2N 6NG), 11pm – 5:30am. Last entry 3:30am. £4 before 1am, £8 after.

From its early beginnings in Bethnal Green, where men wearing skirts would disturb the old people drinking their brandy and playing bridge, Sink the Pink has come a long way, and I don’t just mean to Limehouse. The Troxy was packed out with looks to die and ascend to heaven for. Anyone familiar with Sink the Pink knows you have to get there early, this night is always sold out and the few tickets that are on the door on the night disappear very quickly. With good reason, too. With guests B*Witched and Rev. Glyn Famous leading us in prayer Church of STP was one hell of a religious experience! The STP crew treated us to stunning numbers like ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ and a beautiful rendition of Holy Water from ‘Joan Oh’. Brilliant tributes to James Brown and Bowie were well received and the closing number ‘Like A Prayer’ was the perfect way to end a glorious night!

It’s 6pm in the packed Royal Vauxhall Tavern and the laid-back crowd of happy bears and friendly ex-clubbers are already under the spell of one of London’s best stand ups, Myra Dubois. Hilarious from the outset, Myra owns the crowd and has them eating out of her hand with her no-apologies, non-PC humour. Myra banters with three balding guys in the front row, using their heads as percussive instruments, then moves on to a group of Polish girls, saying that they learnt the alphabet from Sesame Street but stopped when they reached the letter ‘K’, to the squeals of delight from the regulars. The crowd delight in singing along to all of Myra’s anthems ’Money, Money, Money’, ’Perfect Day’, ‘I Know Him So Well’ and her Margaret Thatcher impression of ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’ which is performed by dedication to a birthday party. Then, by way of a complete surprise, we are amazed to find that Myra does magic! After a couple of comedy ‘mix ups’ with the tricks, we are then shown the amazing bandana trick which involves a very squashed banana. Although I’ve seen this sketch before with other comedians I have never laughed so much as with the sheer comic timing that Myra naturally has, as she actually pulls off the magic in the trick perfectly. Time for an encore or two, Myra gets herself an extra cheer for managing not to do any Madeline McCann jokes and woos the merry crowd with the theme from “Home and Away”. The Sunday Socialites are left with the sounds of Simon Le Vans and the other resident DJ’s to dance the night away.

As the Friday night bar crawl continued, we got to Bridge Bar in Clapham for the WE pre-party! DJ D’Johnny was hitting it hard on the decks, keeping the WE crowd moving. We saw a lot of familiar faces all getting their pre-drink on before hitting the Coronet. But we burnt off the alcohol as we burnt through the dance floor to D’Johnny’s hot beats, which warmed us up nicely for the main event. Bridge Bar was packed with a host of amibitious partygoers, from blonde bombshell babes on a night out with their gay pals, to fashion forward Topman twinks, to huskily hairy Iranian hunks. The salubriously slick Bridge Bar provided the perfect prelude to one of the best parties of the year!

For the past six months, the lovely people at the Bridge have been making your Tuesday nights that little bit brainier with their popular quiz nights and this week, for the third time, the night was given over to a good cause. The little grey cells of the 14 teams taking part were tested and tortured by sexy nerd and resident quizmaster Ryan, AKA Quizeerascal Remus, while a raffle and an auction helped tip the kitty over the £2,200 mark. James, who is about to run his seventh London Marathon for Cancer Research UK, has raised over £150,000 for them! His current tally for this year is now over £19,000. The winning team was the suitably quizzically named Larry Who??? The competitive streak of the participants was regularly exercised as they rushed to the MC, brandishing their answers to the bonus questions, but the atmosphere remained as friendly as it normally is under that particular Clapham railway arch and a great time was had by all. Should you feel inspired, you can do your bit at www.justgiving.com/ jogon16/. It’s far less tiring than running a marathon.

The Fabulettes have had a tumultuous year, experiencing the ruthless and brutal side of the industry. It’s been a while since we chatted. You guys have had an eventful past year, right? This time last year we were on an upward journey. We were preparing to go to America, filling out visa forms, and everything was going so well. Then in August we received an email from our manager saying he’d gone bankrupt and that it was all over. It literally happened overnight. All of our future bookings were of course cancelled too. How did you all deal with that? Well, we all had our individual meltdowns. Eventually we decided to pick ourselves up and carry on. For legal reasons we changed the name of the group from The Supreme Fabulettes to The Fabulettes. We didn’t know if our manger had lost the rights to the name and we wanted to play it safe. And then, due to personal circumstances, Vanilla Lush had to bow out. We went from being a four piece (with Sheila Simmonds) about to tour America, to a three piece trying to scrape together a few pub gigs. One extreme to the other. Thank god we’re really good friends because we all helped each other out. Will Vanilla be returning to the group? The door is open for Vanilla. We’d love to have her back when she’s able to return. QX 1097 MASTER 2.indd 59 15/03/2016 16:47 COMMUNITY – KINGS CROSS STEELERS This week, accounts manager Sam Chedzoy talks to us about joining gay London rugby club the Kings Cross Steelers

“I joined the Kings Cross Steelers in September last year after embarking on a weight loss programme. I had never done any sport before, unless you count Netflix marathons so I guess you could say I was pretty nervous. Straight away my fears were put at ease and I was welcomed with open arms. The inclusive nature of the club doesn’t just cover sexuality, it extends to fitness levels, body shapes and generally any guy who wants to engage in the sport.” “The biggest shock I had when joining was just how much activity and engagement there was on offer. From weekend rugby skill clinics in Edinburgh, to parties and socials - your calendar suddenly fills up pretty quickly and there isn’t a weekend or evening left without much to do. The best thing of course, besides increasing my overall fitness and learning new skills, is being welcomed into a family. I joined at a pivotal time for the club, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its founding.” “As the world’s first ever gay-inclusive rugby union club, the Steelers have made a lasting impact on the complex relationship between homophobia and sports and have paved the way for many other teams to do the same. This summer, many of the club’s members, including myself, are travelling to Nashville to celebrate the Bingham cup. It’s a meeting of gay rugby teams across the globe which will be a fantastic event as well as a huge personal achievement.”

If you’re interested in joining the Steelers (or just ogling pictures of their players) then head to www.pitchero.com/clubs/kingscrosssteelers/
