Silenced by grief, Esther leaves her young daughter, Aurora, to fend for herself; against a backdrop of an absent father and maternal neglect, the child takes comfort wherever she can, but the fierce attachments she forms never seem to last until, as an adult, she travels to her father’s native Ireland. If You Were Mine employs elements of well-known fairy tales and explores themes of maternal abandonment and loss, as well as the consequences of adoption, in a narrative that laments the perilous nature of children’s lives. -

In ATU 451, found in the collected tales of the Grimms and Hans Christian Andersen as well as in oral tradition, the protagonist remains silent while weaving the shirts needed to dis enchant her brothers from their birdlike forms. -

THE GOOSE GIRL BY SHANNON HALE READING GROUP GUIDE 1. The queen tells Ani that “a crown princess, like a queen, can succeed only by staying apart. Separation, elevation, delegation” (p. 25). Describe these three terms in your own words, and then discuss whether you agree with the queen’s view. What do you think it would be like to live under these expectations? How do you think this would affect Ani’s ability to make true friends and keep them? 2. Ani is stripped of her rightful crown by her mother, and forced into poverty and virtual slave labor by those who are hired to protect and care for her. While these life changes are traumatic and dramatic, in the end they prove to be good for Ani; she becomes a stronger, more insightful person and meets people whom she might not have otherwise. How so? What does she learn about herself? What does she learn from those who befriend her along her journey? How would things have been different between Geric and Ani had she not gone through these trials? 3. Discuss Ani’s relationship with her mother. Do you think the queen truly loves her daughter if she is able to deny her daughter’s birthright? Do you believe her mother’s actions are a betrayal? A political move? A move to protect her daughter? A selfish act? What makes you believe this? How would you feel if your mother denied you something you felt entitled to? 4. Ani’s aunt and mother are very different from one another. -

[(essay date 1991) In the following essay, McGlathery explores the erotic implications of the father-daughter relationship in the romantic folktales of the Brothers Grimm, Giambattista Basile, and Charles Perrault, highlighting common plot scenarios.] As the stories discussed thus far show, emotional involvement between parents and children is a frequent object of portrayal in folktales. That this is especially true of the romantic tale should come as no surprise, for in love plots generally the requisite hindrance to the fulfillment of young desire often takes the form of parental objection or intervention. There are surprises to be found here, however. In particular, the romantic folktale offers the possibility of hinting, with seeming innocence, at erotically tinged undercurrents in the relationship between parent and child that do not lend themselves to tasteful direct portrayal. Fairy tale romance often depicts the child's first experience of leaving home and venturing out on its own, usually in connection with choosing a mate. In the stories of the brother and sister type, resistance to the taking of this step is reflected in a desire to return to the bosom of the family or, failing that, to retain the devoted company of one's siblings. Thus, we have seen how Hansel and Gretel, while prepared to survive together in the forest if need be are overjoyed at being able to live with their father, and how the sister in "The Seven Ravens" succeeds in restoring her brothers to human form and bringing them home with her. -

Richard Hugo House, Fall 2016: Fairy TaleInspired Fiction Level: Intermediate to advanced. The class will be most useful to writers who have previously completed one or more stories. The class will be structured as a workshop and practicum; that is, each twohour session will be devoted to a combination of workshop of a class member’s story; discussion of published tales or stories; and in class writing exercises, often related to that day’s reading, which could serve as ideagenerators for new work. Writers in the class may have already been working in tale/fantasy/magical realism/surrealist modes in their fiction, or they may have come to the course looking for new ideas or directions. Unless the class turns out to be very large, the plan will be that each writer in the class gets two chances to have a story draft workshopdiscussed. The second workshop could be used to discuss a revised draft of the earlierworkshopped story or a new story, whichever the writer prefers. Reading assignments will be available either as handouts or at online links. SYLLABUS Week One: Fairy Tale Foundations. To read: Grimms tales: “Cinderella,” “Little Red Cap,” and “The Six Swans.” To Bring: Your memory of a favorite fairy tale—or any memory of a first story or book you read. Perkins 1 Lizzi Perkins Gideon Burton ENG 295 11 April 2016 The Goose Girl: The Importance of Understanding Self-Concept Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were German researchers and linguists who are best known for their collection and retelling of folklore. They popularized stories like Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, etc.; pretty much every Disney classic was first popularized by the Grimm Brothers. What makes their stories so timeless? Why do people from different cultures, backgrounds, and even from different time periods all connect to those stories? One common theme throughout each of these Grimm folktales is the discovery of self or establishing an identity. No matter someone’s age, ethnicity, or gender, having a firm grip on one’s identity is vital to living a happy and contented life (Erikson). Looking at the Grimm Brothers’ The Goose Girl through the lens of identity development highlights overarching themes and obstacles that anyone going through an identity crisis can relate to.
