FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th, 2020 TODAY IS… FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11… 9/11 ANNIVERSARY - NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE AND REMEMBRANCE – Hard to believe it’s already been 19 years since the September 11th attacks on the US.bOn that day, 2,977 people died when al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four planes, crashing two into the World Trade Center in New York, and one into the Pentagon, before the fourth was brought down in a field near Shanksville, PA. There will be memorial services today in all three locations, as well as several virtual remembrance ceremonies. NATIONAL MAKE YOUR BED DAY – Come on!…Just because you can’t leave the house doesn’t mean you can’t make your bed! The National Sleep Foundation says making your bed can actually help improve your sleep by reducing tossing and turning. Besides, it makes your mother happy when you do it. NATIONAL 401(K) DAY (The Friday after Labor Day) – Only 70-percent of Americans are prepared for retirement, and it’s never soon to start. If your company offers a 401(K) retirement plan, start taking a closer look and up your contribution if you can. If you don’t have a 401(K), you can learn more and start your own at any number of financial institutions. COVID PANDEMIC MILESTONE – It’s been 6-months since the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a pandemic. The first cases were discovered in December and since then the virus has infected millions and killed hundreds of thousands of people around the world. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12… NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE DAY – Did you know milkshakes used to be packed full of whiskey? They took out the booze around 1885 when pharmacies started selling them as a ‘wholesome drink” for kids. Guess that was before they knew what calories were. NATIONAL VIDEO GAMES DAY – Video gaming is an 18-billion-dollar-a-year industry! It’s hard to believe, but the first video game patent was filed back in 1947! They described it as an ‘interactive electronic device’. o FUN FACT: ‘Fortnite’ and ‘League of Legends’ are the two most played games of 2020. NATIONAL DAY OF ENCOURAGEMENT DAY – Everyone can use a pat on the back. Take a second to give someone a positive boost. US OPEN WOMEN’S FINAL – The 140th US Open tennis championships women's singles final will take place this afternoon at Flushing Meadows in New York. Last year, 19- year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu beat Serena Williams, denying her a record 24th Grand Slam singles title. This year’s Open has been played in empty stadiums. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13… UNCLE SAM DAY – The patriotic poster and character was born on September 13, 1766. o Did you know: Uncle Sam was based on a New York butcher named Sam Wilson, who donated barrels of meat to soldiers during the War of 1812. It was the soldiers who started saying it was from ‘Uncle Sam’. NATIONAL BALD IS BEAUTIFUL DAY – Celebrating ‘cue-balls’ and ‘chrome domes’ everywhere. NATIONAL KIDS TAKE OVER THE KITCHEN DAY – Invite your kids into the kitchen to create their favorite meals or dessert (with adult supervision, of course!) Get them involved in the planning and prep, too. Just make sure they don’t set the place on fire. NATIONAL PEANUT DAY – It’s a legume, not a nut! OK, now that we got that out of the way…we celebrate the peanut, believed to have originated 35-hundred years ago in South America. NFL matchups include the Washington Football Team in their first game without their old nickname. ANNIVERSARY OF LAW AND ORDER PREMIERE – The TV classic 'Law & Order' turns 30 today. It debuted on NBC in 1990 as a gritty alternative to the more ‘heroic’ police dramas. Since its premiere, it’s been spun-off into 7 other series’, including ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Producers are working on two new ones: Law & Order: Organized Crime and Law & Order: Hate Crimes (we’re guessing they’re not comedies). NATIONAL GRANDPARENTS DAY (celebrated on the First Sunday after Labor Day) – Celebrating your parents’ parents, and not just because they still give you money on your birthday. Recent studies suggest growing up around grandparents helps kids better cope with adverse childhood experiences. Also, they seem to always have some candy in their pockets. BENJAMIN McKENZIE, Actor 42 – He starred as Ryan Atwood in the popular teen series “The O.C.” and more recently as James Gordon in the TV series “Gotham.” JENNIFER HUDSON, Singer, Diva, 39 – ‘And I’m Telling you…’ Hudson broke out on season 3 of “American Idol” and carved a great career in film and music. MICHELLE DUGGAR, Reality star/‘baby factory’ 54 – Reality star known for having “19 Kids and Counting.” FIONA APPLE, 43 – It would be ‘criminal’ not to wish this GRAMMY-winning indie singer/songwriter and poet a happy birthday. BEN SAVAGE, 40 – Yikes! The actor who starred as Cory Matthews in the 90s TV sitcom “Boy Meets World” is now 40. Reprised the role in 2014 for “Girl Meets World.” NIALL HORAN, 27 – Member of the super popular boy band One Direction. LILI REINHART, 24 – Actress known for playing Betty Cooper in “Riverdale.” Also had a role in last year’s film “Hustlers.” TRENDING/ODD: GUY GETS PERMISSION TO BE BURIED IN ‘JUICY FRUIT’ CASKET (00:25) Don't know why anyone would want to be buried in a Juicy Fruit-themed casket, but a guy in Virginia will get his wish. The World War 2 vet wants to go into the 'ever-after' looking like a stick of gum. The 94-year-old is known around Roanoke as the nice old man who passes out Juicy Fruit to everyone he meets. He finally got permission from the company that makes it to paint the gum's logo on his coffin, once he's popped his last bubble. WESTERN WILDFIRES (00:17) Wildfires in Oregon have forced half a million people to grab what they can and get out of their homes (that's about 10 percent of the state's entire population). So far, at least 7 people have been killed in Oregon, Washington and California. Wildfires in 12 states have destroyed about 7-thousand square miles of land. That's nearly the size of New Jersey.
