Other Contributions NATURE NOTES Amphibia: Caudata Ambystoma ordinarium. Predation by a Black-necked Gartersnake (Thamnophis cyrtopsis). The Michoacán Stream Salamander (Ambystoma ordinarium) is a facultatively paedomorphic ambystomatid species. Paedomorphic adults and larvae are found in montane streams, while metamorphic adults are terrestrial, remaining near natal streams (Ruiz-Martínez et al., 2014). Streams inhabited by this species are immersed in pine, pine-oak, and fir for- ests in the central part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (Luna-Vega et al., 2007). All known localities where A. ordinarium has been recorded are situated between the vicinity of Lake Patzcuaro in the north-central portion of the state of Michoacan and Tianguistenco in the western part of the state of México (Ruiz-Martínez et al., 2014). This species is considered Endangered by the IUCN (IUCN, 2015), is protected by the government of Mexico, under the category Pr (special protection) (AmphibiaWeb; accessed 1April 2016), and Wilson et al. (2013) scored it at the upper end of the medium vulnerability level. Data available on the life history and biology of A. ordinarium is restricted to the species description (Taylor, 1940), distribution (Shaffer, 1984; Anderson and Worthington, 1971), diet composition (Alvarado-Díaz et al., 2002), phylogeny (Weisrock et al., 2006) and the effect of habitat quality on diet diversity (Ruiz-Martínez et al., 2014). We did not find predation records on this species in the literature, and in this note we present information on a predation attack on an adult neotenic A. ordinarium by a Thamnophis cyrtopsis. Xenosaurus Tzacualtipantecus. the Zacualtipán Knob-Scaled Lizard Is Endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of Eastern Mexico
Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus. The Zacualtipán knob-scaled lizard is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of eastern Mexico. This medium-large lizard (female holotype measures 188 mm in total length) is known only from the vicinity of the type locality in eastern Hidalgo, at an elevation of 1,900 m in pine-oak forest, and a nearby locality at 2,000 m in northern Veracruz (Woolrich- Piña and Smith 2012). Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus is thought to belong to the northern clade of the genus, which also contains X. newmanorum and X. platyceps (Bhullar 2011). As with its congeners, X. tzacualtipantecus is an inhabitant of crevices in limestone rocks. This species consumes beetles and lepidopteran larvae and gives birth to living young. The habitat of this lizard in the vicinity of the type locality is being deforested, and people in nearby towns have created an open garbage dump in this area. We determined its EVS as 17, in the middle of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), and its status by the IUCN and SEMAR- NAT presently are undetermined. This newly described endemic species is one of nine known species in the monogeneric family Xenosauridae, which is endemic to northern Mesoamerica (Mexico from Tamaulipas to Chiapas and into the montane portions of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala). The Honduran Leaf-toed Palm Gecko Over seventeen years following the (Phyllodactylus palmeus) is a medium-sized Hemidactylus invasion of Utila (Kohler, 2001), (maximum male SVL = 82 mm, maximum our current observations spanning from 2016 female SVL = 73 mm) species endemic to -2018 support those of McCranie & Hedges Utila, Roatan and the Cayos Cochinos (2013) in that P. palmeus is now primarily Acceptedarchipelago (McCranie and Hedges, 2013); Manuscript restricted to undisturbed forested areas, and islands which constitute part of the Bay Island that H. frenatus is now unequivocally the most group on the Caribbean coast of Honduras. The commonly observed gecko species across species is not currently evaluated by the IUCN Utila. We report that H. frenatus has subjugated Redlist, though Johnson et al (2015) calculated all habitat types on Utila Island, having a an Environmental Vulnerability Score (EVS) of practically all encompassing distribution 16 out of 20 for this species, placing P. occupying urban and agricultural areas, palmeus in the lower portion of the high hardwood, swamp, mangrove and coastal vulnerability category. To date, little forest habitats and even areas of neo-tropical information has been published on the natural savannah (T. Brown pers. observ). On the other historyC&F of P. -

Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl. The Cofre de Perote salamander is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of eastern Mexico. This relatively large salamander (reported to attain a total length of 150 mm) is recorded only from, “a narrow ridge extending east from Cofre de Perote and terminating [on] a small peak (Cerro Volcancillo) at the type locality,” in central Veracruz, at elevations from 2,500 to 3,000 m (Amphibian Species of the World website). Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl has been assigned to the P. bellii complex of the P. bellii group (Raffaëlli 2007) and is considered most closely related to P. gigantea, a species endemic to the La specimens and has not been seen for 20 years, despite thorough surveys in 2003 and 2004 (EDGE; www.edgeofexistence.org), and thus it might be extinct. The habitat at the type locality (pine-oak forest with abundant bunch grass) lies within Lower Montane Wet Forest (Wilson and Johnson 2010; IUCN Red List website [accessed 21 April 2013]). The known specimens were “found beneath the surface of roadside banks” (www.edgeofexistence.org) along the road to Las Lajas Microwave Station, 15 kilometers (by road) south of Highway 140 from Las Vigas, Veracruz (Amphibian Species of the World website). This species is terrestrial and presumed to reproduce by direct development. Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl is placed as number 89 in the top 100 Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered amphib- ians (EDGE; www.edgeofexistence.org). We calculated this animal’s EVS as 17, which is in the middle of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), and its IUCN status has been assessed as Critically Endangered. -

El presente estudio de la Reserva Biológica Uyuca tuvo dos objetivos: i) realizar un inventario de la herpetofauna. ii) elaborar un mapa de las especies registradas. Los objetivos fueron alcanzados mediante encuentros oportunos en el sendero principal y alrededor de la Estación Biológica Cabot, desde 1,645 hasta los 2,000 msnm. Para determinar las especies encontradas se utilizaron las guías de campo. Los resultados del inventario preliminar arrojaron un total de cuatro nuevos registros para la reserva: Boa constrictor, Trimorphodon quadruplex, Sibon dimidiatus, y Leptodeira rhombifera. Adicionalmente se identificó: Rhaniella marina. La distribución de la herpetofauna reportada no mostró indicios de desplazamiento dado el rango de distribución que poseen. Other Contributions NATURE NOTES Amphibia: Anura Incilius luetkenii, Smilisca sordida, and Lithobates forreri. Predation by birds. Predation on adult anurans by tropical birds has been recorded on numerous occasions, where birds of various families (e.g., Accipitridae, Striigidae, Momotidae, Turdidae) have preyed on anurans of different families (e.g., Centrolenidae, Dendrobatidae, Hylidae, Leptodactylidae, Rhinophrynidae; Hayes, 1983; Master 1999; Toledo et al., 2007; Acosta and Morún, 2014; Ramírez-Fernández and Solís-DelValle, 2014). The majority of these events are opportunistic and associated with diet-generalist or invertebrate- and vertebrate-predator bird species (Toledo et al., 2007; Amézquita et al., 2013; Paluh et al., 2015). Here, we present information on the predation of Incilius luetkenii (Bufonidae), Smilisca sordida (Hylidae), and Lithobates forreri (Ranidae) by birds in Costa Rica. On 26 May 2013, at Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Sector Santa Rosa, Provincia de Guanacaste, Costa Rica (10°50'N, 85°37'W; WGS 84; elev. 298 m), we observed a Roadside Hawk (Buteo [Rupornis] magnirostris) feeding on an individual of Incilius luetkenii. The hawk was standing on the ground pecking and eating a dead I. luetkenii along the edge of gravel road in Tropical Dry Forest, but once it was startled flew across the road without the toad and perched on a tree approximately 5 m from the ground. We cannot determine if the hawk captured the toad or found it dead (the toad remains appeared fresh), but either of these behaviors was likely because the previous evening breeding aggregations involving I. luetkenii had occurred in the area. Although frogs and toads are import- ant dietary items for this hawk (Haverschmidt, 1972; Beltzer, 1990), this observation is the first to report I. -

375 Poster Session I, Event Center – The Snowbird Center, Friday 26 July 2019 Maria Sabando1, Yannis Papastamatiou1, Guillaume Rieucau2, Darcy Bradley3, Jennifer Caselle3 1Florida International University, Miami, FL, USA, 2Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, Chauvin, LA, USA, 3University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA, USA Reef Shark Behavioral Interactions are Habitat Specific Dominance hierarchies and competitive behaviors have been studied in several species of animals that includes mammals, birds, amphibians, and fish. Competition and distribution model predictions vary based on dominance hierarchies, but most assume differences in dominance are constant across habitats. More recent evidence suggests dominance and competitive advantages may vary based on habitat. We quantified dominance interactions between two species of sharks Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos and Carcharhinus melanopterus, across two different habitats, fore reef and back reef, at a remote Pacific atoll. We used Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) to observe dominance behaviors and quantified the number of aggressive interactions or bites to the BRUVs from either species, both separately and in the presence of one another. Blacktip reef sharks were the most abundant species in either habitat, and there was significant negative correlation between their relative abundance, bites on BRUVs, and the number of grey reef sharks. Although this trend was found in both habitats, the decline in blacktip abundance with grey reef shark presence was far more pronounced in fore reef habitats. We show that the presence of one shark species may limit the feeding opportunities of another, but the extent of this relationship is habitat specific. Future competition models should consider habitat-specific dominance or competitive interactions.
