Networks Heat up Summer with Originals Networks Heat Up Summer with Originals 06.03.2014 Summer TV officially kicks off this month, with more channel surfing options than just reruns and reality. Now more broadcast nets are getting into the mix, with CBS' debuting "Extant" along with its hit from last year, "Under the Dome," and cablers FX and HBO taking advantage of what's largely considered a broadcast off season. Below are just a few of the big bets networks are making this summer: Starz: 50 Cent's "Power" debuts this Saturday, starting off Starz's summer that also includes novel adaptation "Outlander." "Power" tells the story of a money-hungry drug kingpin who wants to focus on the more legal side of his life as a nightclub owner. Syfy: "Defiance" is joined by "Dominion" this summer, both premiering June 19. And don't forget the sequel to social hit "Sharknado," "Sharknado 2: The Second One," coming in July. FX: New drama "Tyrant" joins FX's lineup June 24, with the patriarch of a family has to head home to a fictional country to deal with some political turmoil. HBO: "The Leftovers" will debut one week after the final season premiere of "True Blood." HBO's new drama is executive produced by Damon Lindelof and starts off after a town's population suddenly disappears. CBS: Last year's summer experiment with "Under the Dome" worked so well for the broadcaster that it's expanding the idea with Halle Berry-starrer "Extant" and new legal drama "Reckless," all premiering within two weeks of one another between June 29-July 9. IFC: Comedy singing duo Garfunkel and Oates (Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci) will have their IFC debut Aug. 7. The series follows each of their personal lives with some performances thrown in of songs such as "Sports Go Sports" or "Pregnant Women Are Smug." Read more at Adweek. [Image courtesy of HBO].

Several of these statements are posted on the refrigerator of Mia Hall, a neighbor whom the government-trained assassin Evan Smoak is slowly falling for, in Gregg Hurwitz’s thriller novel Orphan X. The last of these statements is illustrated with references to the discussion of God in The Brothers Karamazov, the Devil’s role as the “adversary of Being” in Goethe’s Faust, the burgeoning mythos necessitated by Superman’s omnipotence, and the juvenile idiopathic arthritis suffered by their formulator’s daughter, Mikhaila. These statements, which were distilled from their formulator’s 40-point response to a Quora inquiry, include “pet a cat when you encounter one on the street.” They are offered as an “antidote to (*) chaos,” which is described as a “feminine” concept and is illustrated at various points as a dragon. “Stand up straight with your shoulders back” is the first of, for 10 points, what numbered guidelines that title a 2018 best seller by a truth-telling, bucko-whispering, extremely intellectual Canadian? • Parody As a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015
Parody as a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015 A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by John P. Thomerson BM, State University of New York at Fredonia, 2008 MM, University of Louisville, 2010 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD ABSTRACT Parody is the most commonly used structural borrowing technique in contemporary American vernacular music. This study investigates parody as a borrowing practice, as a type of humor, as an expression of ethnic identity, and as a response to intellectual trends during the final portion of the twentieth century. This interdisciplinary study blends musicology with humor studies, ethnic studies, and intellectual history, touching on issues ranging from reception history to musical meaning and cultural memory. As a structural borrowing technique, parody often creates incongruity—whether lyrical, stylistic, thematic, evocative, aesthetic, or functional—within a recognized musical style. Parodists combine these musical incongruities with other comic techniques and social conventions to create humor. Parodists also rely on pre-existing music to create, reinforce, and police ethnic boundaries, which function within a racialized discourse through which parodists often negotiate ethnic identities along a white-black binary. Despite parody’s ubiquity in vernacular music and notwithstanding the genre’s resonance with several key themes from the age of fracture, cultivated musicians have generally parody. The genre’s structural borrowing technique limited the identities musicians could perform through parodic borrowings. This study suggests several areas of musicological inquiry that could be enriched through engagement with parody, a genre that offers a vast and largely unexplored repertoire indicating how musical, racial, and cultural ideas can circulate in popular discourse.

Faculty of Audiovisual Media and Creative Technologies Simon Holm Master’s thesis From Corpus to Canon: (De)Constructing the Genre of Musical Television Film- og fjernsynsvitenskap Year 5 1 Abstract Since the first musical TV series aired in 1968, the genre has developed in sporadic fashion. The series belonging to the genre have often been commercial failures, but, as this thesis strives to prove, that does not mean they are without aesthetic value. By first clearly defining and delimiting the genre to establish a corpus and then subjecting the corpus to diverse means of analysis, this thesis presents an evaluative canon of TV musicals. This canon is in no way objective or representational of any views other than the author’s but is nonetheless an attempt to legitimate the genre as an aesthetically valuable mode of expression. The thesis claims that even though TV musicals are victims of a duality of condescension, they should not be: Musical TV series have the potential to be valuable, not only in the context of television but in the context of art as a whole. Through aesthetic criteria and the concept of camp, this thesis seeks to legitimate not necessarily the genre as a whole, but those selected works which comprise its evaluative canon. 2 Contents 1 Introduction ............................................................................................................................. 6 2 Methodology, part one ............................................................................................................ 8 3 Defining
