Music by Gabriel Yared, Cinematography Ole Bratt Birkeland, Edited by Melanie Ann Oliver Production Company Pathe BBC Films Calamity Films BFI: Jude, released on 27 September 2019 (United States) Ritwik Kaikini The gaze on the eyes of the worn out actress is stern. It is shaky with vibrations from an overworked, sleepless past. Carrying a forced smile she tries to sway her loving audience. An audience which feeds on her personality like devouring a well dressed cake with a delicious frosting. But little does the audience know that if they take a bite from that cake, they will taste something sour in the center. The sweetness is just an escape. The film opens with the nervous, wide-eyed, young Judy Garland (played by Darci Shaw) on the sets of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in 1939, staring directly at us while the vicious Louis B. Mayer(played by Richard Cordery), the producer lurking in the shadows, advises her that if she were to quit her creative career, leave the sets and live a ‘normal’ life like all the other girls out there, she would be forgotten forever and swallowed up like a raindrop in the Pacific Ocean.

  • Read the Journal
Composite Journal 1 The following is a composite of journal made up of entries written by students in the 2008-2009 session of the Theater in London Class. The names, school years, and majors of the authors follow each entry. In some cases multiple entries for a single play are provided so as to allow the reader to see how different students responded to the same performance. Cinderella (2008). Dir. Melly Still. Based on Brothers Grimm Aschenputtel. Written by Ben Power and Melly Still. Lyric Hammersmith Theatre The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre has a reputation for unique and alternative Christmas shows, and this version of Cinderella certainly didn't disappoint. The play not only models itself after the original Grimm Brother's Aschenputtel but also incorporates elements of other traditional folk tales to add depth to the backgrounds of the characters. It is a darker and more introspective Cinderella than the Perrault-based Disney version many are familiar with, but it is by no means less tender. The depth of character development and psychological intricacy of this production are, in my opinion, its greatest strengths; though at times I felt the storytelling could have been less convoluted. I admired the Pulp-Fiction-esque timeline and its contribution to the dreaming landscape of the production, but I was occasionally distracted from the performance while trying to sort through the multiple myths and multiple timelines in my head. Another thing I admired about this production was the characterization of the step-sisters: they are not exactly sympathetic but are portrayed in a less harsh light than in most Cinderella tales I have read.

FIRST MAN 2018 Biography/Drama/History 141 mins 12A Available immediately The riveting story behind the first manned mission to the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the decade leading to the historic Apollo 11 flight. A visceral and intimate account told from Armstrong’s perspective, the film explores the triumphs and the cost – on Armstrong, his family, his colleagues and the nation itself – of one of the most dangerous missions in history. Directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Ryan Gosling. From the official website Winner of the Oscar for Best Visual Effects “What director Damien Chazelle and actor Ryan Gosling as Armstrong have undertaken in this tale of the early days of space exploration is a rescue mission: to reclaim as heroes these fragile men, strapping themselves into ramshackle machines and hurling themselves into the wondrous void to give us a new horizon.” Austin Chronicle “Ryan Gosling plays Neil Armstrong as a hero of relatively few words but Claire Foy provides the emotional heft (and the Oscar buzz) as the steadfast spouse of the lunar legend.” Radio Times “This is at once cracking, deep-cutting, free-flowing in a defined range, fast and compelling.” Eye for Film https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSoRx87OO6k STAN & OLLIE 2018 Biography/Comedy/Drama 97 mins PG No DVD release date but available immediately for gold bookings Starring Steve Coogan and John C.
