Knight Spring 2009 (This document last revised March 18, 2009) 1 The nature of Egyptian religion (intro) The Egyptian idea of \deity" is a difficult one to pin down. The most frequently used word for deity, ' 4 ntr (or nTr), resembles the English word god in that it can be used as either a common noun, referring to one of numerous divine beings, or as a proper noun, referring to the Supreme Being. Much more problematic than the word used, however, are the details of what the gods do and even who they are. Gods become conflated with one another; most notably, there are (at least) two gods named Horus, designated \Elder" and \Younger", and they share a number of traits, often being confused (deliberately or mistakenly). The gods usurp one another's roles, or delegate their roles to others, with astounding frequency. It is Set's role to protect the sun god from the serpent of chaos|except when Horus has that function. The Supreme Being is Re-Atum, except when he is Amun-Re, except when he is simply Re or simply Atum or . Adding still further to the complication is the local character of Egyptian religion. Every nome had a patron god, and while some of the gods patronized more than one nome, there was plenty of variety. We have already considered this to some degree: we have noted Thebes, for example, as having Amun for a patron, and observed that the military rise of the Thebans in the Middle and New Kingdoms were responsible for the enrichment and empowerment of Amun's cult. -

Schroeder: Ma'at in Egyptian Art Ma’at as a Theme in Ancient Egyptian Tomb Art In ancient Egypt, a variety of gods and symbols were used to explain the complex religious rites of the culture. Ma’at, the idea of truth, justice and order, is an example of a symbol that was so influential that it was also recognized as a deity.1 The concept of ma’at infiltrated numerous aspects of art during all dynasties and periods. Ma’at is particularly ubiquitous in tomb art of individuals in the upper class: officials, pharaohs, and other royals. Tomb art served numerous purposes within the funerary practice of ancient Egyptian society, and ma’at is a motif that helps fulfill many of these purposes. Ma’at is an important concept that helped create a pleasant living space for the deceased, evoke everyday life, and convey importance of the deceased to the gods. -

This is not far from the truth. The diverse natural habitats combined with a tourist-friendly atmosphere and well-maintained road network make Ghana a real birder’s paradise. A visit to the World Heritage Site of Cape Coast Castle and understanding its controversial history was a powerful experience. The rainforest areas near Kakum National Park and vast savannas of Mole National Park were certainly highlights of this extraordinary tour. We tallied over 400 species of birds and over 20 mammals. These included highly sought- after gems like White-necked Rockfowl, Egyptian Plover, Blue-moustached Bee-eater, Akun Eagle-Owl, Stone Partridge, White- spotted Flufftail, Yellow-billed Turaco, Red- billed Dwarf Hornbill and many, many more. _____________________________________ The Tour in Detail Our first bird in Ghana was a fabulously performing Yellow-crowned Gonolek seen from the breakfast table – not a bad start! We spent the morning in Shai hills, which is Violet Turaco by Tuomas Seimola located north-east of the capital, Accra. -

Journal of Ancient Egyptian Interconnections A NOTE ON AN AMENHOTEP III PLAQUE FROM TEL BURNA1 Deborah R. Cassuto Bar Ilan University Albright Institute of Archaeological Research2 Ido Koch Tel Aviv University Itzhaq Shai Ariel University ABSTRACT The discovery of a plaque associated to the New Kingdom at Tel Burna in the southern Levant augments archaeological evidence to enhance historical understanding of the Late Bronze Age occupation at the site. The plaque which is the focus of this brief article was based on preference of pottery types. The plaque (No. found at the site of Tel Burna, a multi-period tell located in 211111) that is the focus of the current study was found in the southern Levant on the northern bank of the Guvrin one of the pits located on the eastern slope of the tell. While River. Historically, this part of the lowlands that precedes the plaque was not discovered in a clear archaeological the ascent to the Judean Hills is termed the Shephelah. They are a testimony of the everyday life of the ancient Egyptians for which remains have been found throughout all of the temples of Karnak. Continuous occupation from the First Intermediate Period until the Late Roman Period is well attested at different locations in the complex of Karnak. Settlements are easily recognizable by their use of brick, especially mud-brick. The artifacts and organic remains found during new excavations of settlements give us a good idea of the inhabitants and their daily life. -

LISTING ONE PYRAMID TEXTS BY TYPOLOGY AND DISPOSITION 821 Pyramid Texts were examined for typology. The typological classification was primarily according to the person of the beneficiary, and secondarily by recurring series and motifs. In this way Pyramid Texts were divided into two categories: Sacerdotal Texts and Personal Texts. The Coda went on to assert a subdivision of the categories into types: Offering Texts and Priestly Recitations for the category of Sacerdotal Texts, and Apotropaic, Transition, and Provisioning Texts for the category of Personal Texts. Figure 18 represents this as a schematic hierarchy. Except for four exceptional texts,1053 the types are subdivisions of par- ent categories. The features distinctive to the types are, consequently, also distinctive to categories. Figure 19 represents their relations heuristically. It is intended to show that, for instance, a priestly motif distinguishes a text not only from those of the offering type but also from texts of the personal category. Listing One is organized according to the texts’ numerical order. For each text, informa- tion is given about category, person of the beneficiary, person citation, type, recurring series, motifs, and group. In the context of typology, references to ‘Coffin Texts Series’ and ‘Coffin Texts’ indicate Middle Kingdom texts which have not been classified in the present work. In this case the term ‘Coffin Texts’ is not meant to indicate a genre of text concerned, but rather that they are not attested in the Old Kingdom. The listing does not give an explicit indication of the comparative weight of a given text’s typological attributes: the core motifs are not distinguished from the secondary motifs, which are sometimes sparsely attested in the opposing category. -

Fate in ancient Egypt May Ahmed Hosny Faculty of tourism and hotel management, Helwan University ARTICLE INFO Abstract Keywords: The Ancient Egyptian civilization is one of the richest Fate; Destiny; Shay; civilizations in acquiring various concepts and beliefs from last judgment; God’s nature. These concepts and beliefs can be divided into two will. categories Secular and Religious. As the ancient Egyptians were very religious people, so their dominant beliefs were (JAAUTH) religious beliefs which in turn had a great influence upon Vol. 19, No. 3, their secular life. Consequently, both concepts and beliefs (2020), were intermingling together. This paper will deal with a PP.61-68. unique topic which exists within the different thoughts and beliefs of every human being. No matter what was the time or the age this concept dominates the mind of every human being. Therefore, all the incidents that happens in our life will be automatically related to the fate concept which is stored in the thoughts and beliefs of the human mind. The Concept and its development In the ancient Egyptian language, the fate was known as: “ :SAy or : SAyt or SAw: meaning ordain or fix, which reflects the action of the divinities.(Wb IV 402, 8, 9) . The word “SAw” appeared since the end of the Old Kingdom till the late period, especially in the wisdom literature as for example the “Instruction of Ptahhotep” dating back to the 6th dynasty which stated “His time does not fail o come, one does not escape what is fated”.
