MEMORANDUM

DATE: August 22, 1990 TO: Biologists, Land Managers, Herpetologists and other interested individuals FROM: Nevada Department of Wildlife SUBJECT: Status of , , and other .

Populations of frogs, toads, salamanders and other amphibians appear to be declining in many places around the world. These are considered sensitive ecological indicators because of their permeable skin, biphasic life history, and interactions in the communities where they commonly exist. In Nevada some limited evidence indicates we are having a similar decrease in abundance as is being observed elsewhere in the western United States. Unfortunately, quantitative data on amphibian populations is generally lacking in Nevada except for some of the rarer species which also appear to be declining. Distribution and abundance of some of the more common species is not well documented. To begin developing a database concerning this potential problem we are requesting that anyone with any information please complete a short questionnaire which we are sending to all fisheries and wildlife biologists, land managers, conservation officers, and appropriate academic staff employed by federal and state agencies and universities, and other interested organizations and individuals in Nevada. Any information you might send us on amphibian distribution would prove very helpful in assessing this potentially serious problem. If you know of any other individuals who might be able to contribute information to this evaluation, please pass on a copy of the questionnaire to them or send their names to us and we will provide a questionnaire. Sincerely,

William A. Molini Director PDC:tl Encl.
