Rather, the linguistic and thematic parallels between Riddle 95 on the one hand, and the cosmological riddles and poems in the Exeter Book on the other, strongly suggest that the subject of Riddle 95 is the sun, a frequent topic of early medieval enigmatography. The poem obliquely relates how the rising sun installs itself in the sky to shed its welcome light upon the earth before it sets and vanishes from sight, completing its daily orbit along unknown paths. The main clues helping to secure the solution ‘sun’ are based upon what was known in Anglo-Saxon England about the solar course and the planetary motions, especially from the astronomical writings of Isidore of Seville and Bede. Further evidence is provided by several analogues in the Anglo-Latin riddle tradition, including the Enigmata of Aldhelm and his followers. Since the Riddles have come down to us without their answers in the manuscript, a great deal of scholarly inquiry has been devoted to offering, supporting and refut- ing old and new solutions, especially to those riddles whose subjects have eluded even the specialists. Riddle 95, the ‘last’ of the Exeter Book verse riddles and the Corresponding author: Dieter Bitterli, University of Zurich E-Mail: [email protected] Bereitgestellt von | UZH Hauptbibliothek / Zentralbibliothek Zürich Angemeldet Heruntergeladen am | 20.03.20 11:13 Exeter Book Riddle 95: ‘The Sun’ 613 final item of the codex in its extant form, provides a particularly intriguing case in point, having a long and contradictory history of solutions ranging from ‘wander- ing singer’, ‘moon’ and ‘book’ to ‘prostitute’ and ‘ship’, to name only a few.1 This essay reviews these earlier proposals and offers the new solution ‘sun’ that – as I attempt to demonstrate – is sustained by the context of both the Exeter Book Rid- dles themselves and that of the wider Anglo-Saxon riddle tradition, in which cos- mological phenomena constitute a staple subject matter. I shall first give my own reading and translation of Riddle 95 (Section 2) and discuss why the solutions put forward hitherto fail to fully account for the various clues given in the text (Sec- tions 3–5), before detailing the evidence in support of the answer ‘sun’ (Sections 6–8). 2 Riddle 95: Text and Translation The text of Riddle 95 occupies the lower half of folio 130 v that concludes the Exe- ter Book codex in its present state. The final leaves of the manuscript are heavily damaged by a large diagonal burn that runs through much of the third group of the Riddles (fols. 124v–130v), leaving some items so mutilated that they are inso- luble. The text of Riddle 95, however, is intact and complete, from its initial I (in Ic) at the start of a new paragraph to its end punctuation mark on the last ruled line at the bottom of the page: Ic eom indryhten ond eorlum cuð, ond reste oft ricum ond heanum, folcum gefræge. Fereð wide ond me fremdes ær freondum stondeð hiþendra hyht, gif ic habban sceal 5 blæd in burgum oþþe beorhte god. Nu snottre men swiþast lufiaþ midwist mine; ic monigum sceal wisdom cyþan, no þær word sprecan ænig ofer eorðan. The hope of plunderers travels far and, someone else’s before, stays friend- like with me, [5] if I shall possess prosperity in the strongholds or bright wealth. Now wise men especially love my presence; to many I shall reveal wisdom, and speak no word there, [10] not any upon earth. Although now the children of men, of land-dwellers, greatly seek my trails, I at times conceal my track from all humans’.2 As it stands in the manuscript, the text presents a number of linguistic cruxes that cannot be satisfactorily resolved without editorial intervention. While the open- ing and concluding parts are fairly straightforward and syntactically unambigu- ous, lines 3b–9 are less so. The main difficulties concern the manuscript readings of fereð (3b), fremdes (4a), beorhtne god (6b) and sprecað (9b), which most editors and commentators have attempted to emend in one way or other.3 The above text of Riddle 95 leaves lines 3–4 unaltered but adopts two earlier emendations in lines 6 b and 9 b. The reasons for this are both grammatical and contextual and based on the following considerations: – There is no need to emend fereð (3b) to fere, as Krapp and Dobbie (1936: 243) and others do. Fereð ‘travels’ is best understood as the predicate of hiþendra hyht ‘the hope of plunderers’ (5a) and as syntactically parallel to stondeð ‘stands’ (4b). In my reading of the unemended lines, the unspecified desir- able thing that the ‘plunderers’ hope to get ‘travels’ and then ‘stays’ with the enigmatic speaker. – I take the genitive fremdes (4a) as a substantivized form of fremde (adj.) in the sense of ‘another (person), anyone else’ (DOE s.v. fremde 3.c.ii), modifying the subject hiþendra hyht ‘the hope of plunderers’ (5a). The expression fremdes ær ‘someone else’s (possession) before’ contrasts the former condi- tion of the hiþendra hyht with its current state in the speaker’s friendly com- pany, as expressed by the adverbial dative freondum ‘in the manner of friends, friendlike’ (4b) in the complementing half-line. What previously be- longed to someone else is now in the possession of the ‘noble’ speaker, bring- ing prosperity and wealth (6). – Although the accusative singular masculine beorhtne god ‘the bright God’ (6b, with a short ŏ) is grammatical and retained by some, neuter beorhte god ‘bright 2 Krapp and Dobbie (1936) print fere (3b) for MS fereð, while retaining the manuscript readings beorhtne (6b) and sprecað (9b); my emendations and punctuation.     15 Recycling Anglo-Saxon Poetry: Richard Wilbur’s ‘Junk’ and a Self Study Chris Jones University of St Andrews Ever since scraps, both literal and metaphorical, of Anglo-Saxon (also called Old English) verse began to be recovered and edited in more systematic fashion, modern poets have tried to imagine and recreate its sounds in their own work.1 Often the manuscript materials in which Anglo-Saxon poetry survives show signs of having been uncared for and even mistreated; the tenth-century Exeter Book of poetry, for example, which preserves many of the texts now taught in universities as canonical, is scarred with the stains of having had some kind of vessel laid on it, as if it were a drinks mat, with knife-scores, as if it were a chopping board, and with singe marks, as if some red-hot object was temporarily rested on its back (Muir 2000: II, 2). Such treatment is scarce wonder, given that changes in both language and handwriting must have made such manuscripts unintelligible to all but a few until the studies of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century antiquarians began to render them legible again. But it is salutary to remember that fragments of the past which we hold valuable now have often been the junk of intervening ages, waste materials for which only some alternative function might save them from disposal. Recycled, however, fresh uses may be found for Anglo-Saxon poetry, uses that generate for it new currency, in addition to whatever independent value its stock possesses. This essay sets out to examine some of the generative possibilities of recycling Anglo-Saxon poetry, both from a critic’s perspective and a practitioner’s.

Accepted 22 November, 2012 The Deor is a poem found in the Exeter Book and included in the Old English elegies. The main purpose of this contribution is to highlight the possible intertextual links of the poem. After an outline of the old English elegies and a brief review of the most significant passages from the elegies, this short poem will be analyzed stanza by stanza. An attempt will be made to demonstrate that the various interpretations of the text depend on particular keywords that require that the readers to share the same time and space coordinates as the author. The personal names are the most important clues for interpretation. The problem is that they have been emended differently according to the editors and that the reader is supposed to know the referent hinted by those particular names. "Cædmon's Hymn", composed in the 7th century according to Bede, is often considered the oldest extant poem in English, whereas the later poem, The Grave is one of the final poems written in Old English, and presents a transitional text between Old and Middle English.[1] Likewise, the Peterborough Chronicle continues until the 12th century. The poem Beowulf, which often begins the traditional canon of English literature, is the most famous work of Old English literature. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle has also proven significant for historical study, preserving a chronology of early English history.Alexander Souter names the commentary on Paul's epistles by Pelagius "the earliest extant work by a British author".[2][3] In descending order of quantity, Old English literature consists of: sermons and saints' lives, biblical translations; translated Latin works of the early Church Fathers; Anglo-Saxon chronicles and narrative history works; laws, wills and other legal works; practical works ongrammar, medicine, geography; and poetry.[4] In all there are over 400 survivingmanuscripts from the period, of which about 189 are considered "major".[5] Besides Old English literature, Anglo-Saxons wrote a number of Anglo-Latin works.

The purpose of the dissertation is to present a text of Ascension, transcribed from the Exeter Book facsimile. Included, too, are textual notes and commentary, introduction, translation, and glossary. Although the poem has been edited as part of the Exeter Book, as one of Cynewulf's signed works, and in collections of Old English literature, it has never been issued before as a separate work. The first 1,664 lines of the Exeter Book have been divided by scholars into Christ I (Advent), Christ II (Ascension), and Christ III (The Last Judgment) and were considered for many years to be a trilogy called Christ. Since Benjamin Thorpe published the first edition of the Exeter Book in 1842, scholars have repeated­ ly attempted to discover whether Cynewulf wrote one, two, or all three parts. For the reason that Cynewulf's name appears only at the end of Ascension, current scholarship holds that Cynewulf wrote only this poem, a view that the present study affirms. The introduction includes a discussion of the background of the Exeter Book, problems relating to authorship, dating, dialect, and runic writing, and a critical analysis which ejqjlores the structure, diction, imagery, and theme of the poem.

    Riddle Hero Play and Poetry in the Exeter Book Riddles • Andrew Higl The author discusses the Exeter Book riddles, some of the earliest poems in English, specifically Old English, as perfect examples of how play and poetry intersect. Their playfulness, he claims, is most apparent in the origi- nal manuscript, but notes that few modern readers read Old English. The orthography of the manuscript also helps to make the play of the poems more obscure. Moreover, contemporary readers nearly always encounter the riddles in modern editions and with modern English translations, and editors and translators often provide the riddles with clear divisions and interpretive notes. They sometimes offer their own solutions to the riddles (although the actual manuscript provides no explanation for them). All of which leads to a different and less playful experience for readers of the riddles. The author explores what it means to play the riddles in their original context, mak- ing the individual reader the riddle hero (hæleþ) whom the text calls on to construct playful worlds of imagination and language. He examines how the Old English riddles demand to be played and how they oscillate playfully between the mundane, the sacred, and the obscene. They comprise a rich source of informa- tion for the study of Anglo-Saxon concepts of life courses and life stages, but have yet to be treated as such despite current enthusiasm surrounding the study of historical life cycles. Probably this is due to their status as biographies of largely non-human sub- jects. Equipped with the insights of life-writing scholarship, including Paul de Man’s argument that all autobiography is prosopopoeia and personification, it becomes pos- sible to see the riddles’ value as discourses on life progression and indeed as early examples of life-writing and ‘object biography’ in the English vernacular. Building on a consideration of the riddles alongside their Latin analogues as well as influential con- temporary schemes of the life course, this paper advocates the interrogation of such critical labels as ‘anthropomorphism’ and ‘personification’, often applied to the riddles.     THE BRITISH MUSEUM TRANSCRIPT OF THE EXETER BOOK. (Ada. MS. 9067.) Mr. Anscombe, in the May number of Anglia, has drawn attention to the transcript of the Exeter Book made for the British Museum some time prior to the end of February 1832. By directing attention to this neglected, though not unimpor- tant MS., Mr. Anscombe has done a Service to students of Old English. He has also raised questions in connection with the MS. which fortunately admit of definite and conclusive answers. His arguments are these: (1) He believes Kemble's text of Widsith to have been taken, not from the Exeter Book itself, but from this British Museum transcript. (2) He thinks that Thorpe derived his text of Widsith, not from the Exeter Book, but from Kemble, and he continues: (3) "Both English and German scholars have kept on copying Thorpe and Kemble, and interpolating here and emending there, until the accepted printed text has ceased to be authoritative." The conclusion then is that the "textus receptns" of Widsith depends upon Thorpe, and that äs Thorpe depended upon Kemble, and Kemble upon a transcript, it lacks authority. As to (1). That Kemble used the British Museum tran- script is not a question of surmise, but of fact. Kemble writes: "My text is given from an accurate and collated copy of that codex [the Exeter Book] now in the British Museum." (Preface to Beowulf, xxvi.)
