Apollo Theater to screen ‘Shaft’ with live score performance, half-priced tickets for Harlem residents By KARU F. DANIELS NEW YORK DAILY NEWS | JAN 16, 2020 Richard Roundtree walks past the Apollo Theater in a scene from the 1971 lm, "Shaft." (Everett Collection) Can ya dig it? The iconic blaxploitation lm “Shaft” will get a new look (and feel) when it plays at the Apollo Theater accompanied by a live performance of Isaac Hayes’ Academy Award- nominated score on Feb. 29. On Wednesday, the world’s famous venue announced that its special screening of the 1971 MGM classic will feature live music by Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, a sprawling band of musicians led by founder and cultural critic Greg Tate. Producers for the event are encouraging audience members to wear urban-inspired fashion, building on the 1970s Harlem style that the Gordon Parks’ trailblazing lm brought to the masses. "Gordon Park's Shaft sparked a shift in the way mainstream America viewed African Americans in lm. For the rst time ever, we were the heroes ghting for and maintaining justice for people that looked just like us," Apollo Theater's Executive Producer Kamilah Forbes said in a statement. “Shaft" marked a milestone in Hollywood with an African American director at the lm’s helm, and the main character, portrayed by Richard Roundtree, acting as a heroic black detective taking on the mob and corrupt police force. Hayes' won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the theme song, becoming the rst African American to win in the category. “The body of erotic and exhilarating music Hayes composed for the lm brought the genre-exploding innovations of early ’70s R&B to the big screen with a blues-saturated intensity that embraced psychedelic soul, Ellingtonian sophistication, and the polyrhythmic élan of Afro-Cuban jazz,” Tate commented. “The Burnt Sugar live scoring of Shaft will be faithful to the funk and sensuality of Hayes score while teasing out the experimental potential of its seductive, frothy themes.".

Film, Politics, and Ideology: Reflections on Hollywood Film in the Age of Reagan* Douglas Kellner (http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/kellner/) In our book Camera Politica: Politics and Ideology in Contemporary Hollywood Film (1988), Michael Ryan and I argue that Hollywood film from the 1960s to the present was closely connected with the political movements and struggles of the epoch. Our narrative maps the rise and decline of 60s radicalism; the failure of liberalism and rise of the New Right in the 1970s; and the triumph and hegemony of the Right in the 1980s. In our interpretation, many 1960s films transcoded the discourses of the anti-war, New Left student movements, as well as the feminist, black power, sexual liberationist, and countercultural movements, producing a new type of socially critical Hollywood film. Films, on this reading, transcode, that is to say, translate, representations, discourses, and myths of everyday life into specifically cinematic terms, as when Easy Rider translates and organizes the images, practices, and discourses of the 1960s counterculture into a cinematic text. Popular films intervene in the political struggles of the day, as when 1960s films advanced the agenda of the New Left and the counterculture. Films of the "New Hollywood," however, such as Bonnie and Clyde, Medium Cool, Easy Rider, etc., were contested by a resurgence of rightwing films during the same era (e.g. Dirty Harry, The French Connection, and any number of John Wayne films), leading us to conclude that Hollywood film, like U.S. society, should be seen as a contested terrain and that films can be interpreted as a struggle of representation over how to construct a social world and everyday life.
