Mahanadi Delta
Study Area - Mahanadi Delta Mahanadi delta is formed by a network of three major rivers: Mahanadi, Brahmhani and Baitarini draining into the Bay of Bengal. The coastline of the delta is about 200 km long which stretches from south near Chilika to north up to Dhamra River. Using SRTM 30m digital surface elevation data, area within 5m contour from the coast line has been extracted within the vicinity of Mahanadi delta (Figure 1). Figure 1 SRTM 5m filled contour (shown as light blue) overlaid on LULC map of Mahandi Delta The 5m contour spread across districts of Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur and Bhadrak. Chilika lake is also within 5m contour line and within the Mahanadi delta. The district Baleswar, in the extreme north is within 5m contour, but it is outside the Mahanadi delta. The geomorphological map (Figure 2) of the region (Source: Bhuvan-NRSC) also indicates that these features lie in coastal region of Mahanadi and adjacent river systems. Using the above criteria, five districts, namely, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Bhadrak have been considered as the study area for Mahanadi Delta (Figure 3). The north and south bounds of the study areas have been defined using the geomorphological map, and Jajpur has been excluded, as it is not lying in the Mahanadi river system, though part of coastal zone. The total study area is 13137.679sq km and consisting of 5 administrative districts and 45 Blocks (sub-district) as shown in Figures 3 and 4 respectively. In Table 1 the physical area of the blocks/districts has been provided. -

Overall phytoplankton was comprised of Bacillariophyceae (81.4%), Dinophyceae (12%), Chrysophyceae (3%), Cyanophyceae (1.8%), Desmophyceae (2.9%) and Chlorophyceae (3.9%). A total of 86 species of phytoplankton belonging to 56 genera and 6 classes were recorded from offshore and inshore stations. A massive bloom of cyanobacteria Trichodesmium erythraeum was also sighted during the winter season. Dinoflagellates showed a peak during monsoon at inshore stations. Maximum values of diversity indices were recorded during winter at offshore and during pre-monsoon at inshore stations. Carrying Capacity of Beaches of for Providing Shacks & Other Temporary Goa Seasonal Structures in Private Areas Submitted to Government of Goa Prepared by NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SUSTAINABLE COASTAL MANAGEMENT Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Government of India Carrying Capacity of Beaches of Goa for Providing Shacks & Other Temporary Seasonal Structures in Private Areas Foreword India is forging ahead with a high development agenda, especially along the long coastline, which inadvertently causes adverse impacts on the environment. Most of these activities are unplanned, leading to an imbalance in ecological sustainability. It is evident that developmental activities need to be regulated and managed, so that deterioration of the environment can either be minimized or avoided. This can be achieved by estimating the carrying capacity of a system that enables better planning for development, concurrently safeguarding ecological and environmental and social concerns. The State of Goa is one of world‟s most renowned tourism destinations with several natural beaches along its 105 km coastline, with a tourist footfall of over 50,00,000 tourists per year. Despite such heavy human pressure on a limited coastal scape, the Government of Goa has attempted to maintain the integrity of its beaches by regulation and management measures. However, a more systematic and scientific approach, was necessary to protect the ecological and environmental resources and to ensure livelihood sustainability. Based on such principles, the present study on carrying capacity of beaches and the adjacent private areas was undertaken by National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Carrying capacity was determined using several international and national best practices to determine the scenarios and indicators for the assessment. -

If left unmanaged, salinity has serious implications for water quality, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, supply of water for critical human needs and industry and the longevity of infrastructure. The Coastal Salinity has become a persistent problem due to ingress of the sea water inland. This is the most significant environmental and economical challenge and needs immediate attention. The coastal areas are more susceptible as these are pockets of development in the country. Most of the trade happens in the coastal areas which lead to extensive migration in the coastal areas. This led to the depletion of the coastal fresh water resources. Digging more and more deeper wells has led to the ingress of sea water into the fresh water aquifers turning them saline. The rainfall patterns, water resources, geology/hydro-geology vary from region to region along the coastal belt. -

INTRODUCTION Maintenance of Law and order is the foremost requirement for a peaceful society, planned economic growth and development of the people and the State. The Tamil Nadu Police has to play a key role in assisting the Government to achieve peace and tranquility, social harmony and protection of the weaker sections and women in the State. The Tamil Nadu Police Force is being geared up to meet the challenges of sophisticated new methods of criminalities, with its upgraded quality of manpower through modernisation of its Force and training in gender sensitization and a humane approach. Apart from the maintenance of Law and Order, the Tamil Nadu Police has to deal with social problems like illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, civil defence, protection of civil rights, human rights, video piracy, diversion of Public Distribution System (PDS) commodities, economic offences, idol theft, juvenile crimes, communal crimes and also take up traffic regulation and road safety measures. The Tamil Nadu Police Force is all set to transform itself "into a highly professional and competent law enforcement agency comparable to the best in the world". ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE AND SET UP 2.1. Top Level Administration The Director General of Police is in overall charge of the administration of the Tamil Nadu Police Department.
