NEGLECTED INSECTS IN BEDFORDSHIRE Beds Natural History Society Conference PSOCOPTERA – BARKFLIES by Alan R. Outen & Ian K. Dawson PSOCOPTERA Barkflies and Booklice (also sometimes referred to as Psocids) Small insects (1.5 – 7mm) with a domed postclypeus (the area at the front of the head between antennae and mouth); long filiform antennae; simple wing venation with two ‘triangular’ cells at tip of forewing; tendency to run rather than fly. Winged barkflies usually hold their wings tent-wise over their abdomens like miniature lacewings. These species can be confused with Psyllids but can be distinguished by gently touching them – psyllids jump away, barkflies don’t. Stenopsocus immaculatus – a common species in Beds. Note the strongly domed postclypeus and long filiform antennae Barkflies - Variations on a theme Some species don’t have full-sized (macropterous) wings but have them much reduced (brachypterous) or absent (apterous). They can be confused with springtails (which however will jump away when touched). Cerobasis guestfalica has been Embidopsocus enderleini recorded from several Beds sites An uncommon species not (yet) found in Beds Available Resources • Excellent British Barkflies website which via the gallery has been brilliant in facilitating identification of this group making them accessible to all. • 2005 RES Handbook is also very good. • Keith Alexander who runs the National Recording Scheme is very helpful. Graphopsocus cruciatus – a common and distinctive Bedfordshire species THE 2005 RES handbook is also excellent with keys that are much easier to follow than many mycological ones ! …….. A Stereo zoom binocular microscope is very useful though not essential ….. …….It is remarkable what can be achieved with the aid of digital photography !! Stenopsocus immaculatus PSOCOPTERA – BARKFLIES 98 British spp in total of which 69 live outdoors, the rest are synanthropic. -
Lee Valley Regional Park Landscape Character Assessment
LCT C: Urban Valley Floor with Marshlands SPA, which provides a nationally important habitat for overwintering birds. Cultural Influences 4.64 The low-lying land of rich alluvial deposits supported a system of grazing, referred to as the Lammas system5 from the Anglo-Saxon period to the end of the C19th. Grazing rights on the marshes were extinguished by the early C20th and a substantial proportion of the marshlands, with the exception of Walthamstow Marshes, were then modified by industrial activities and landfill, including the dumping of bomb rubble after WW2. In the 1950 and 60s the construction of flood relief channels ended the periodic inundation of the marshlands. 4.65 Communication routes through the valley floor proliferated over the C20th, including pylons, roads and railway lines mounted on embankments, but residential and industrial development remains largely confined to the margins. 4.66 Public access and recreation now characterises much of the marshlands, with some areas managed as nature reserves. However substantial infrastructure, such as the railway lines and flood relief channels and adjacent industrial development, means access through and into the marshes from surrounding urban areas is often severed. Several innovations relating to tagmosis or the appendages borne on particular somites are summarised here as putative apomorphies of individual higher taxa. -

McKay3 Received: 23 June 2015 /Revised: 1 September 2015 /Accepted: 4 September 2015 /Published online: 21 September 2015 # Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2015 Abstract Euchelicerates were a major component of xiphosurid horseshoe crabs, and by extension the paraphyly of Palaeozoic faunas, but their basal relationships are uncertain: Xiphosura. The new taxon reveals the ground pattern of it has been suggested that Xiphosura—xiphosurids (horseshoe Dekatriata and provides evidence of character polarity in crabs) and similar Palaeozoic forms, the synziphosurines— chasmataspidids and eurypterids. The Winneshiek may not represent a natural group. Phylogenetic analysis resolves Winneshiekia at the base Euchelicerates, represented today by xiphosurids (horseshoe of Dekatriata, as sister taxon to a clade comprising crabs) and arachnids (scorpions, spiders, ticks, and their rela- chasmataspidids, eurypterids, arachnids, and Houia.
