Available now, the second official studio album from the legendary Ace of Cups highlights the band’s longstanding attitude of total creative freedom and fierce commitment to humanity. Built on a rock-solid foundation of blues and soul, infused with the ageless tendrils of folk melodies and world music rhythms, the new album reveals the power of song and the maxim of love and togetherness that is core to Ace of Cups. These women are part of a generation for whom social justice was—and still is—a major concern, and in the light of the tension and tumult of recent events, we could all benefit from their courage and positivity. Sing Your Dreams is a new collection of 12 songs and stories, and features collaborations with Jackson Browne (who duets on album closer ‘Slowest River’), Sheila E. and the Escovedo Family , Bakithi Kumalo (whose iconic bass-playing was integral to the sound of Paul Simon’s Graceland), jam-band guitar luminary Steve Kimock , peace activist and counterculture icon Wavy Gravy , Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna), and David Freiberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Starship). Biography View. THE ACE OF CUPS - THE JOURNEY CONTINUES. “Ace of Cups is course-correcting rock history.” —The Guardian. Sing Your Dreams , the new album by pioneering all-women combo the Ace of Cups arrives hot on the heels of their warmly-received eponymous 2018 debut – fifty years in the making! – this new collection of songs and stories is not so much a sequel, as a welcome second dip into the Ace’s overflowing vessel of melody, harmony, poetry and good vibrations. Originating from within the psychedelic milieu of 60s San Francisco, the original Ace of Cups quintet was a beloved fixture of the scene, delivering memorable performances – no less than Jimi Hendrix was a fan – sterling songcraft, and a reputation for enchanting harmonies that saw the women contribute to albums by Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Despite this prime visibility, when the band eventually split in 1972, they left behind no records of their own. Yet, the legend of these young women persisted, and in 2003 an anthology of vintage Ace of Cups’ live and demo recordings helped remind the music world of what it had missed. Having all remained friends, the women of the Ace of Cups took time from the paths that each of their lives had subsequently taken to regroup and in essence, pick up where they had left off. Starting in 2011, informal musical get-togethers would lead to rapturously-received reunion shows, along with the inevitable suggestion that these seasoned, yet never jaded, musicians should make the record they were destined to back in the day. Ace of Cups was the result of many months work in the studio with respected producer Dan Shea. Upon its release in 2018, this delightful and heartwarming suite of songs touched many with its unexpected vibrancy, proving that there are no boundaries to age, race or gender when making music that matters. Major media coverage for the album event led to accolades from the press, while touring and TV appearances helped introduce a new generation of fans to the Ace of Cups. The group’s unique brand of creativity and humanity continues to flow unabated on Sing Your Dreams . We once more hear that same easy-riding bedrock of blues and soul, infused with folk and world music rhythm, and an innate understanding of the power of song, no matter how it might be presented. There’s the soft-shoe shuffle of ‘I’m On Your Side,’ and the plaintive ode to togetherness that is ‘Sister Ruth.’ The band reach back to their Haight-Ashbury heyday for the psych-tinged ‘Gemini’ and a deliciously sarcastic ‘Waller Street Blues.’ Lest we forget, these ladies can also rock as hard as any, as we hear upon their punchy take on Keb Mo’s ‘Put A Woman In Charge’ - a telling choice for our times – and an effervescent reprise of Denise Kaufman’s own girl garage nugget, ‘Boy, What’ll You Do Then.’ But most importantly, the maxim of love and togetherness that is core to Ace of Cups remains equally strong on this new record. These women are part of a generation for whom social justice was and is a major concern, and in the light of recent events, we could all benefit from their positivity. Hence the first excerpt from the sessions for Sing Your Dreams in ‘Made For Love,’ a message of hope to a world in crisis, which Rolling Stone labeled “a tender, timely new song about remaining connected during difficult times.” Another powerful statement is the Ace of Cups’ collaboration with counterculture guru Wavy Gravy, ‘Basic Human Needs’; equal parts wit and compassion, set to a catchy, internationally-aware gospel groove. Sing Your Dreams also features other friends of the Ace, such as Jackson Browne (who duets on album closer ‘Slowest River’), Sheila E, Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna), David Freiberg (Quicksilver / Starship), and others. As before, production duties are capably handled by Dan Shea. The release of Sing Your Dreams coincides with the hundredth anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment (giving women the right to vote). Yes, we’ve come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. Let the music of The Ace of Cups be both our soundtrack and our guide, as we continue the journey. The ACE OF CUPS: Mary Gannon. Denise Kaufman. Mary Ellen Simpson. Diane Vitalich. Dallis Craft. “The Ace of Cups really have that kind of blood harmony thing that usually only happens with people who grew up in families and sang together… get their new album!” – Jorma Kaukonen, Fur Peace Ranch, May 30, 2020.

The song says “we can’t go back again,” but they have, and in the process the unique sisterhood that is the Ace of Cups has crafted an album not only ageless, but fully without boundary or cliché. For anyone unfamiliar with the Ace story, in a nutshell, it is one of unwitting and unheralded pathfinders. Ace of Cups may not have been the first all-women rock ‘n’ roll band, but they were the one that mattered within that bizarre wrinkle in time that constituted late 1960s San Francisco. Converging from a diverse set of backgrounds in Haight- Ashbury just before the Summer of Love, these young women would constitute an independently driven, uniquely inspired organization, capable of feather-light poetry, funkier soul and further-out freakery than most of their more celebrated male compatriots within the psychedelic ballrooms. Legendary concert promoter Bill Graham gave Ace of Cups one of the most-coveted gigs amongst the San Francisco groups when he booked them to open for The Band’s first concert in April 1969 at Winterland. The group stayed active for a full five years, and the only iniquity was that, despite the avowed interest of the industry and obvious hometown support, the original Ace of Cups never got to make a record. That cruel “what if” has now been laid to rest, and how. A full half-century of restless creativity informs the contents of this remarkable record, delivered with an energy that musicians half their age, and with twice their experience, should envy. Right from the start the Ace understood the art of the song, and the ladies have kept that spirit true and close to everything they do.

In early 2008, the music community lost three significant community members, Chuck Day (blues musician), Alton Kelley (prominent poster artist) and Martin Fierro (saxophonist), accelerating the need to capture the histories of these unique cultural contributors. The Marin History Museum took up the charge to preserve this dynamic history while the key contributors were still alive to share their unique stories.

  • “Magic” of Algorithmic Predictions with Technology-Mediated Tarot Card Readings
Exploring the “Magic” of Algorithmic Predictions with Technology-Mediated Tarot Card Readings Joyce Lee, Sejal Popat, Soravis Prakkamakul 2019 MIMS Final Project ABSTRACT We draw parallels in the predictions made by algorithms to those of divination, which likewise render the abstract into actionable recommendations. Because of their inherent opacity and grounding in quantitative data, algorithmic predictions appear to possess a sense of technical “magic” that non-experts do not often perceive as a constructed reality; by contrast, fortune telling is frequently viewed with skepticism, received not as truth, but instead as a means for entertainment or self-reflection. Our objective is thus to evaluate whether reframing algorithmic predictions with a deliberately mystical lens may lead people to reconsider the authority of technical objects. We design a system which enables self-guided tarot card readings, involving a conversational interface, screen-based visualization, and natural language processing to make predictions of the user’s past, present, and future. In 10 research sessions with our prototype, we found that interactions reflected broader, generalizable insights about interactions with computational prediction systems, including lack of user agency when faced with potential manipulation, privacy concerns, as well as poor performance. Within the traditions of reflective and speculative design, we discuss implications of computing’s tendency toward magical presentation and imagine alternate paradigms. TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION

f all the bands that made up the mid- ‘60s San Francisco scene, the Wild Oflower may have been the perfect conglomeration of Haight Street expecta- tions. Combining the streamlined, jet-age folk-rock sound of Takes Off-era Jefferson Airplane, jammy aspects of the Grateful Dead, the pretty harmonies of Sopwith Camel and the We Five, bluesy numbers like Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother & the Holding Company, and the folk punk of the Harbinger Complex, the Wild- flower were not some cheap imitation of these groups. They were contemporaries of them, sharing smoky nightclubs and ball- room stages from day one. And though they were there from the beginning, were courted and trotted out with the best of them, the Wildflower never landed “the big one,” and thus, sadly and unfairly, have remained but a footnote in San Francisco music history. The Wildflower was born in a time before the whole world knew about San Francisco and the fun its denizens were having. The Beat scene of North Beach had been slowly evolving into some- thing new. The area around Haight and Ashbury, near where the universities were, was a low- rent paradise filling up with creative young people, recently untethered from their families and ready to try just about anything. But as more and more people arrived to take part in the celebration, things started to take a turn. By the time Surre- alistic Pillow hit the racks at Magic Flute, ex- ploitative articles declaring the Haight a hippy haven filled the pages of mainstream rags like Look and Life.
