DEDICATION For my Great Aunt Vida, an artist and teacher, who was the star of her own story in an age when women were supporting characters. She was tough and kind, stingy and giving in equal measures. Vida Esta gave herself a middle name, because she could and always wanted one. Ms. Light was my first superheroine and she didn’t need super powers. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Three years ago, I woke up in the middle of the night with an idea for research that was daunting. This thesis is the beginning of bringing that idea to life. So many people helped me along the way.

But women’s roles in comics have often been diminished as they become victims, damsels in distress, and sidekicks. This thesis explores the problems that female characters often face in comic books, but it also shows the positive representation that new creators have introduced over the years.

  • Surveillance, Social Order, and Gendered Subversions
SURVEILLANCE, SOCIAL ORDER, AND GENDERED SUBVERSIONS IN BATMAN COMICS, 1986-2011 by © Aidan Diamond (Thesis) submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts Department of English Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2017 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador !ii ABSTRACT Batman is “the world’s most popular superhero.”1 An icon of American excep- tionalism, Batman has been featured in radio programmes, television shows, musicals, and more films than any other superhero since his 1939 comic book inception. While Batman has also been the subject of more scholarship than any other superhero, sustained scholarly inquiry of his vigilante infrastructures and their effects upon those Batman deems criminal is scarce; instead, critical readers prefer to interrogate his fascist under- tones. This thesis aims to ameliorate this lack of scholarship by interrogating Batman’s regulatory surveillance assemblage, particularly how it is negotiated and subverted by Barbara Gordon/Oracle and Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Using Foucault’s theories of crimi- nality, Lyon’s articulation of surveillance, Haraway’s cyborg hybridizations, Mulvey’s deconstruction of the gaze, and Butler’s and Tasker’s respective conceptualizations of gender, I argue that female characters problematize and complicate the otherwise unques- tioned authority of Batman’s surveillance assemblage in the 1986-2011 DC continuity. 1 “Batman Day Returns!” DC Comics. 14 June 2016, www.dccomics.com/blog/2016/06/14/batman-day- returns. Accessed 16 July 2017. !iii Acknowledgements This project owes its existence to a great many people who supported and encour- aged me throughout the process, asked insightful and necessary questions, took the time to read early chapter drafts, let me take the time to pet dogs and read non-Bat-comics, and were just generally the best friends a thesis-writer could hope for.

THE DYNAMIC DUO THEN AND NOW: BATMAN AND ROBIN AS EVOLVING CULTURAL ICONS by Elizabeth C. Wambheim A Senior Project in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Honors Project ST. CATHERINE UNIVERSITY April 1, 2014 2 With many thanks to Patricia Montalbano (project advisor), Rachel Neiwart Emily West and Sharon Doherty for their continuous and invaluable interest, assistance, and patience with the project. 3 Introduction When presented with the simple silhouette of a stylized bat inside a yellow oval, people the world over are able to recognize this emblem and, at the very least, name its wearer. Even as the logo is altered with time, the yellow backdrop traded for a grey one, the awareness persists. Yet even as people recognize Batman’s logo, one person’s impression of the superhero does not always align with another’s: a cheerful, law-abiding Batman who orders orange juice instead of alcohol at bars is Batman as he appeared in the 1960s, and a brooding hero wreathed in darkness and prone to conflicted inner monologues is the Batman of the 1980s.

Every incarnation of them in movies, television, and video games are the same persons just hopping around the multiverse. 2 My take on Grant Morrison’s Skyland. It is mostly the same thing, but with a fancier name. Earth-0 o This Earth contains the Pre-Flashpoint Universe minus a few minor alterations. Superman and Lois Lane are not married.3 . Cyborg does become a regular member of the Justice League. This version of the Legion of Superheroes is a hodgepodge of the other various versions. Joe Chill was never captured. The Justice League was formed after they stopped a preliminary invasion from Apokolips. 3 The reason why I favor this change from the New 52 is that I felt that their marriage wasn’t really going anywhere at the time of the reboot. Mostly because they were not having kids (and probably couldn’t without Lois Lane being killed via bukake.) . The current holder of the Black Canary name is the granddaughter of the Golden Age version, and her mother is a public advocate against superheroes despite briefly being the second Black Canary.

201767 Comics and Human Rights: Oracle and Representations of Disability in Superhero Comics | LSE Human Rights Feb 8 2015 Comics and Human Rights: Oracle and Representations of Disability in Superhero Comics Maria Norris Carolyn Cocca is Associate Professor in the Department of Politics, Economics, and Law at the State University of New York, College at Old Westbury. She is the author of Jailbait: The Politics of Statutory Rape Laws in the United States (SUNY Press), and most recently, of “The Brokeback Project: A Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Portrayals of Women in Mainstream Superhero Comics, 19932013”, “Negotiating the Third Wave of Feminism in Wonder Woman” and “Rebooting Barbara Gordon: Batgirl, Oracle, and Feminist Disability Theories” in ImageTexT. She teaches courses on U.S. politics, civil liberties and civil rights law, and the politics of gender and sexuality. Click here for the introduction to the Comics, Human Rights and Representation Week. Our use of the word “disabled” tends to have more to do with how someone interacts with their environment, rather than their actual physical impairment. While we do not tend to label someone who uses glasses, or an elevator, or a chainsaw disabled, we do tend to label someone who has access to none of those technologies disabled—because s/he is not perfectly able to see or climb stairs or swing an axe. It is a civil rights issue and a human rights issue to push for inclusion, and to change environments rather than marginalizing those who don’t fit them. For many people, who perceive disability as more of a descriptor of a body, the words “disabled” and “superhero” may not seem to go together.
