Fryatt, Chairman Alex Kemp, Secretary AK/ 25/5/1986 - 8 - BRITISH COLUMBIA SOCCER ASSOCIATION CHAIRMAN'S REPORT A number of significant events have taken place in the soccer world since our last annual general meeting. Canada's participation in the World Cup Finals in Mexico for the first time was a historical occasion. Canada surprised the skeptics who predicted the team would be "run out of the park". The team performed well and included the following eleven players who learned their soccer in British Columbia ... Paul Dolan, Bruce Wilson, Randy Samuel, Bob Lenarduzzi, Ian Bridge, Randy Ragan, Dale Mitchell, Jamie Lowery, George Pakos, Mike Sweeney and David Norman. Coincidentally, when Canada entered the.World Cup for the first time in 1957, playing games against the USA and Mexico in the qualifying rounds leading to the World Cup Finals in Sweden in 1958, that team also included eleven players from British Columbia. They were Ken Pears, Dave Stothard, Roy "Buster" Cairns, Doug Greig, Pat Philley, Jack Steele, Gordon Ion, Brian Philley, Art Hughes, Gordon "Gogie" Stewart and Norman McLeod. Canada's Pan American team were winners over Bermuda by identical 1-0 scores in home and away games played in April and will now take part in the Pan American Games scheduled for Indianapolis in August this year. The Under 20 Canadian team won the CONCACAF Youth Tournament, held in Trinidad-Tobago last August, without a loss. Ten countries participated in the event. Canada played seven games in all, winning six and tying one with the USA, scoring 23 goals with only 2 against. Canada and the USA qualified for the FIFA Under 20 World Finals to be held in Chile in October this year. It is interesting to note that the Under 20 team played two exhibition games in April against Chile ... winning 2-1 in Toronto and tying 1-1 in Hamilton, Ontario. In July this year Canada will host the second FIFA Under 16 World Youth Tournament in Toronto; Montreal; St.

As well as a lot of awful footballer autobiographies. In this crowded market it’s important to try to make your book leap from the crowd like Sergio Ramos at a corner and demand attention. A catchy, interesting title can help significantly with that. On the other hand, if you’re a footballer, you’re already instantly recognisable to anybody who might buy and read it anyway, and you have access to a loyal fanbase that consistently proves itself willing to part with hard-earned money for any old rubbish they are served up (bad performances, third kits, club shop tat etc.), so why bother? And not bothering is very much the watchword for many players who clearly think that a nice snap and a simple title will do. Hence the plethora of ‘My Story’, ‘My Life in Football’ or ‘My Autobiography’ efforts clogging up the shelves. Surely we can do better than that? We’re not saying everyone needs to call their book Snod This for a Laugh,1 but come on.

DUNDEE UNITED ON THIS DAY JANUARY 11 Dundee United On This Day THURSDAY 1st JANUARY 2015 A great start to 2015 as United thump Dundee in the new year derby at Tannadice, in front of 13,000 fans. Stuart Armstrong deflects a Chris Erskine shot into the Dundee net in the first minute, and an Erskine strike and a Gary Mackay-Steven double make it 4-1 by half-time. Jaroslaw Fojut and Charlie Telfer add two more in the second half, and the 6-2 final score puts United third in the Premiership, just three points behind Aberdeen and two behind Celtic. WEDNESDAY 1st JANUARY 1913 Dumbarton are the new year’s day visitors at Tannadice, but, although a railway special brings 300 fans through from the west coast, The Dundee Evening Telegraph reports that very few of them make it to the game, presumably as a side effect of their new year celebrations. The Dumbarton players, on the other hand, show no sign of any hangover as they start brightly in a match full of chances, but Dundee Hibernian – as the club were called before changing their name to United – come back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3. THURSDAY 2nd JANUARY 1958 United beat East Stirling 7-0. Jimmy Brown and Wilson Humphries both grab doubles, and Allan Garvie, Willie McDonald and Joe Roy score once each. Twenty-year-old Aberdonian defender Ron Yeats makes his debut in the match. He features prominently for United for four seasons, before, in 1961, he’s sold for £30,000 to Liverpool, where he becomes hugely influential and plays over 450 games.

  • Triumph and Tragedy: the Alan Hinton Story’, by Alan Hinton (With Charlie Bamforth)
Geoffrey Publications is delighted to announce the imminent availability of a new book, ‘Triumph and Tragedy: The Alan Hinton Story’, by Alan Hinton (with Charlie Bamforth). Few indeed are the people who can claim to have been intimately involved in professional football for more than 60 years. Fewer still are those who can justly say that they reached the very top as a player, a coach and as an ambassador for the game. And surely nobody else can say that they did this whilst somehow trying to come to terms with the tragic death of a child. Soccer has been the lifeblood of Alan Hinton since he was a young Wednesbury lad watching Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion, imploring visiting supporters to send him their clubs’ programmes. He left school at not-quite-15 years old to join the ground staff at Wolves. He was, literally, taken under the wing of the legendary Jimmy Mullen and transformed into a dynamic, completely two-footed left winger with a dynamic shot who was top scorer in Stanley Cullis’ young Wanderers team of the early sixties. The youngster never got too big for his boots - and this book gives endless stories of his down-to-earth nature. For example, how many modern players would be making their way to and from work on two buses and going home to share a bed with his brother after making his England debut, aged 19? Wolves fans were devastated when their ‘Noddy’ was let go to Nottingham Forest in 1964, though not so heartbroken as Hinton himself.
