Ros, Hans Deeg International Astronomical Union, Technical University of Catalonia (Spain), Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias and University of La Laguna (Spain) Summary This workshop provides a series of activities to compare the many observed properties (such as size, distances, orbital speeds and escape velocities) of the planets in our Solar System. Each section provides context to various planetary data tables by providing demonstrations or calculations to contrast the properties of the planets, giving the students a concrete sense for what the data mean. At present, several methods are used to find exoplanets, more or less indirectly. It has been possible to detect nearly 4000 planets, and about 500 systems with multiple planets. Objetives - Understand what the numerical values in the Solar Sytem summary data table mean. - Understand the main characteristics of extrasolar planetary systems by comparing their properties to the orbital system of Jupiter and its Galilean satellites. The Solar System By creating scale models of the Solar System, the students will compare the different planetary parameters. To perform these activities, we will use the data in Table 1. We found 218 planet hosts out of the 938 in our sample to be part of multiple-star systems, with 10 newly discovered binaries and 2 new tertiary stellar components. This represents an overall raw multiplicity rate of 23:2 ± 1:6 % for hosts to exoplanets across all spectral types, with multi-planet systems found to have a lower stellar duplicity frequency at the 2.2-σ level. We found that more massive hosts are more often in binary configurations, and that planet-bearing stars in multiple systems are predominantly observed to be the most massive component of stellar binaries. Investigations of the multiplicity of planetary systems as a function of planet mass and separation revealed that giant planets with masses above 0.1 MJup are more frequently seen in stellar binaries than small sub-Jovian planets with a 3.6-σ difference, a trend enhanced for the most massive (>7 MJup) short-period (<0.5 AU) planets and brown dwarf companions. -

Already June, galaxy season is peeking and the nebulous treasures closer to the Milky Way are starting to creep into the late evening sky. And as a final signal of Spring, we have a variety of life creeping up at the observatory on Highland Road (and not just the ample wildlife that’s been pushed out of the bayou by the rising flood waters, either). Astronomy Day was pretty big success (a much larger crowd than showed up last spring, at any rate) and making good on the ancient prophecy, we began having meetings at HRPO once again. Thanks again to Melanie for helping us score such a fantastic speaker for our homecoming, too. -

It’s been an interesting year to say the least, if I had to sum it up in one word, the most appropriate is probably ‘novel’. But, they’re all new in their own way, and right after the odometer rolls over at the end of the month, we’ll get a whole new year; hopefully, a year that is novel in more congenial ways. -
