Go Vikesgo .C Om/White C GOVIKESGO.COM/WHITECAPS VS #VIKESVCAPS FEBRUARY 15, 2015 This is the fourth-straight and 10th overall match up between the University of Victoria Vikes and Vancouver Whitecaps FC men’s soccer programs. The teams have met at Centennial Stadium all but one year (2011) since 2005. The friendly match follows a 2014 fall season that saw the 8-1-3 Vikes finish just shy of a CIS Championship berth after losing 2-0 to Saskatchewan in the Canada West semifinals. Despite not appearing at nationals, the Vikes had a highlight season with fifth-year forward Cameron Stokes finishing second in conference scoring with eight goals, going on to be named a Canada West First Team All-Star alongside defender Alex Redpath, midfielder Cam Hundal and keeper Noah Pawlowski. Pawlowski was further honoured as a CIS First Team All-Canadian after posting four shutouts and a save percentage of 80 per cent throughout the regular season. In his first season at the helm, head coach Carl Robinson led Whitecaps FC to their second MLS Cup playoff appearance in 2014. The ‘Caps set new team records for points (50), road points (18), and fewest defeats. The Blue and White also captured a second consecutive Cascadia Cup and qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time in club history. Entering their fifth season in MLS, Vancouver’s MLS roster features three Designated Players in Chilean attacking midfielder and captain Pedro Morales – 2014 MLS Newcomer of the Year – as well as defensive midfielder Matias Laba and new striker Octavio Rivero. Last year, Whitecaps FC defeated the Vikes 1-0 at Centennial Stadium. Since 2005, Vancouver holds the edge with a 7W-1L-1D record against UVic. December 2014 19:20 UTC Canada at the Crossroads: Improving International Performance by Establishing a New Canadian Soccer League Duane W. Rockerbie* December 2014 Abstract: Canada’s national soccer team program has met with disappointing results in the qualifying rounds of play in the CONCACAF zone that lead to World Cup qualification. Canada has not appeared in the World Cup tournament since 1986 and more recent performances place Canada well down in the FIFA world rankings. Canada has not benefitted from a national soccer league since 1993 and Canadian players have difficulty finding training opportunities abroad. This paper develops an econometric model to explain a nations FIFA world points to determine the expected improvement in Canada’s FIFA world points, and subsequent FIFA world and CONCACAF rankings, by establishing a hypothetical ten-team Tier II soccer league. The model suggests that only a modest improvement could be expected since most FIFA member nations already feature at least one professional or semi-professional league of some sort. *Department of Economics, University of Lethbridge 4401 University Drive, Lethbridge, Alberta Canada T1K3M4 E-mail: [email protected] Football is undeniably the most popular team sport in the world. Although many countries feature semi- professional and professional leagues with club sides, nothing captures the public interest and generates feelings of nationalistic pride than football played at the national team level.

  • Gorge Aims to Break Island Drought
Print Story - canada.com network Page 1 of 2 Saturday » October 11 » 2008 Gorge aims to break Island drought Cleve Dheensaw Times Colonist Wednesday, October 08, 2008 Gorge FC, the dominant Island men's soccer power of this decade and the B.C. champion, will attempt to end an Island drought of nearly three decades when the lads from Hampton Park open play today against the Quebec champions at the 2008 Challenge Cup national championships in St. John's, Nfld. Despite the considerable success of Island soccer in the 1980s -- including three players on Team Canada for the 1986 World Cup -- you have to go back even further than the Boy George era to find the last Island club to win the Challenge Cup. Try the disco era, when Vic West won the final of its four consecutive national crowns in 1979. Although Gorge has come up short in two previous trips to the nationals after winning B.C. crowns in 2000 and 2001, several of the players have come through the UVic- Gorge pipeline and have national-championship-winning experience from playing on Bruce Wilson's CIS-championship Vikes teams in 1996 and 2004. Gorge, however, is suddenly problematic between the posts with starting goalkeeper Conor Quinn out due to an injury sustained while training. The job of backstopping the run for a potential national title has fallen to backup keeper Joel Galbraith. Backing up Galbraith will be Chris Davies, picked up from the Gorge Third Division side. It also doesn't help to have Zeke Cabell, one of the best midfielders in the Island league, out due to injury and starting sweeper Mark Cristante game-to-game.
