Around The League

MU’s Brach Earns Place In NEC History Monmouth junior righthander Brad Brach (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township) hurled the NEC’s first no-hitter in nearly three years on Friday in a 2-0 win over visiting Long Island. Brach, who was perfect through eight and a third innings, allowed a walk with one out in the ninth on a 3-2 pitch for his only blemish. He struck out six and improved to 4-1 on the year with his second straight nine-inning, complete game effort. “I was able to hit my spots and get ahead of hitters,” stated Brach. “It feels awesome to be able to accomplish this, and get the win for the team.”

It marked the first no-hitter in the NEC since Long Island's John Dooley and freshman Ryan Ekberg combined to no-hit Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-0, on April 29, 2004. The last no-hitter by an NEC pitcher in a solo effort came on April 27, 2002 when Sacred Heart’s Dan Scott stymied Long Island, 2-0. Prior to that, one would have to go all the way back to April 13, 1996 when St. Francis (NY)’s Chris McConnell threw a perfect game against Marist.

The gem was also the first for a Monmouth pitcher since Glenn Spencer turned the trick against Mount St. Mary’s in 1990.

RPI Update The NEC, which has had one of its stronger non-league seasons in recent memory, is ranked 22nd among 30 conferences in the latest unofficial RPI rankings. The NEC is currently ahead of the Atlantic 10, America East, Ivy, Mid-Continent, Horizon, MAAC, SWAC and MEAC. Central Connecticut State is the league’s highest rated team, ranking 113th of the 293 Division I teams that sponsor the sport.

Quick Start For Mount Following a four-game sweep of Wagner over the weekend, Mount St. Mary’s moved into first place in the NEC with a 6-2 league mark. Not only is the 6-2 start the program’s best-ever in NEC play since joining the conference in 1990, but it also marked the first time the Mount has been four games over .500 within the league at any point in its history. Bobcat Blasts In the first NCAA statistics report of the spring, Quinnipiac ranked ninth in the country with 1.35 home runs per game. The Bobcats, who lead the NEC with 28 round trippers, fell slightly to 1.27 homers per game by week’s end. Quinnipiac is led by senior infielder Randy Gress (Shelton, CT/Fairfield), who stands second in the conference with eight dingers.

CCSU Leading Arms Race Central Connecticut State is off to an 14-7 start, primarily on the strength of its pitching staff, which has compiled a league-low 3.31 ERA (the next lowest ERA is Quinnipiac’s 4.32). Blue Devils hurlers - including four who rank in the NEC top-15 in ERA - have also tossed a conference-best 11 complete games and have permitted just four home runs in 21 contests. To illustrate just how impressive CCSU’s staff has performed, compare the Blue Devils’ numbers with the league average in various pitching categories:

Non-Conference Success For Hawks Monmouth played five three-game series out of conference this season, and won four of them, taking two-of-three from Central Florida, Wofford, Vermont and Liberty. The Hawks lost two-of-three at Navy, with the two losses coming by 2-1 scores.

Streak Comes To End For Wagner’s DiGeronimo Wagner senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) had his NEC-best 22 game-hitting streak snapped on April 6th in the first game of a doubleheader against Long Island. The streak spanned the final two games of 2006 and the first 20 of the current campaign. He stands first in the league with four triples, ranks second with 11 stolen bases and 37 hits, and is seventh with a .366 average.

Slaying The Giants With the 2007 season still in its early stages, league members have already racked up a number of impressive wins, the most notable being Sacred Heart’s 3-0 win over five-time defending Big East champion Notre Dame on March 10. In that contest, senior righthander Jay Monti (Marlboro, NY/Marlboro) shut down the Fighting Irish bats with a complete-game two-hit shutout. He struck out four without issuing a single free pass.

NEC teams have stopped a number of traditional Florida powers during spring trips this month with Monmouth taking two-of-three from Central Florida, 7-4 and 13- 4, to open their season. Wagner beat Florida International, 10-9, on March 4 and Quinnipiac downed South Florida, 12-9, on March 9.

Other impressive triumphs include Quinnipiac’s 12-9 victory over Michigan State (March 11), Sacred Heart’s 7-0 shutout of Pittsburgh (March 6), Wagner’s 11-7 win over Winthrop (March 17), and CCSU’s 2-0 shutout of Penn State (March 25) and 13-6 conquest of Boston College (April 10). In addition, Monmouth played to a 3-3 tie with Boston College on March 7. The NEC is also 5-4 against Atlantic 10 opponents this season.

NEC Regular Season Format With the loss of St. Francis (NY) - which discontinued its baseball program - the eight remaining teams that sponsor the sport will now play 28 league games, facing each member institution four times. Each series will feature a single nine-inning game on Friday, followed by a Saturday doubleheader (seven innings apiece) and a concluding with a nine-inning single game on Sunday. Previously, teams competed in three-game series for a total of 24 league contests. The top four teams on the basis of winning percentage qualify for the NEC Tournament.

New Britain Rock Cats Stadium To Host NEC Tournament After five years contesting the NEC Baseball Tournament at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ, the league’s postseason venue shifts north in 2007 with New Britain Stadium in New Britain, CT serving as host. Akadema (www.akademapro.com) is the presenting sponsor of the tournament.

New Britain Stadium, which opened on April 12, 1996, is the home of the New Britain Rock Cats, a class AA affiliate of the . The venue seats 6,146.

The Rock Cats, who are the Nutmeg State’s oldest continuously operating professional sports franchise, enjoy terrific fan support with an average of nearly 5,000 fans per game. Current and former Major Leaguers who have played for New Britain include Roger Clemens, , Curt Schilling, , , Torii Hunter, , A.J. Pierzynski, , Mo Vaughn and Ellis Burks.

The three-day, double-elimination event is set for May 24-26 with a rain date on May 27. The championship field will feature the NEC’s top four regular season finishers. Sacred Heart is the defending conference champion. Central Connecticut State Picked As NEC Favorite Central Connecticut State has been tabbed the preseason favorite to capture the 2007 Northeast Conference baseball championship, according to a poll of league head coaches. The Blue Devils earned six of eight first place votes in the balloting. Quinnipiac was picked second, followed by Sacred Heart, which picked up a first place vote and was tabbed third. Mount St. Mary’s, which was awarded the remaining first place vote, was chosen fourth along with Monmouth. Long Island and Wagner tied for sixth and Fairleigh Dickinson was picked eighth.

Central Connecticut State (33-18, 16-7 NEC), which claimed its third NEC regular season crown in the last four years in 2006, brings back the bulk of a lineup that led the conference in hitting (.313), runs scored (7.1 rpg) and on-base percentage (.400), as well as a trio of capable starters who combined to post a 21-9 record. This experience should make CCSU a dangerous team in 2007 under eighth year head coach Charlie Hickey, who was awarded NEC Coach of the Year honors for the third time in his career last season after returning the Blue Devils to the top of the league standings. A quartet of second team all-conference picks dot the lineup, including senior infielders Sean Salvatore (Southington, CT/Southington) and Matt Memoli (Shelton, CT/Shelton). Salvatore, a shortstop, led the Blue Devils and ranked fourth on the circuit with a .378 average a year ago, while third baseman Memoli hit .315 and finished the year second in the league in triples (five) and third in RBI (43). Senior designated hitter John Romano (Staten Island, NY/Brookdale CC) made an immediate impact last season upon his arrival in New Britain, hitting .355 and driving in 43 runs, to rank fifth and third, respectively, among NEC hitters. Sophomore outfielder Richie Tri (Everett, WA/Barnstable (MA)) (.295, 40 runs, 35 RBI) was one of the top young players in the conference in 2006, earning Akadema/NEC Rookie of the Week honors on three occasions prior to his second team all-NEC recognition at year’s end. Senior righthander Evan Scribner (Washington Depot, CT/Shepaug Valley) was one of the league’s best last year, earning first team all-star accolades after finishing 7-4 with a 3.25 earned run average (fourth in the NEC). Somewhat overlooked in CCSU’s rise to the top of the league standings a year ago was junior southpaw Matt Gianini (West Haven, CT/West Haven), who finished second in the NEC in both wins (nine) and ERA (2.75), while holding opposing hitters to a .208 average, lowest of any NEC hurler. Senior righty Adam Piechowski (Winsted, CT/Philadelphia University) (5-1, 4.16 ERA) rounds out the talented trio.
