  • Hamas: Background and Issues for Congress
Hamas: Background and Issues for Congress December 2, 2010 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R41514 Hamas: Background and Issues for Congress Summary This report and its appendixes provide background information on Hamas, or the Islamic Resistance Movement, and U.S. policy towards it. It also includes information and analysis on (1) the threats Hamas currently poses to U.S. interests, (2) how Hamas compares with other Middle East terrorist groups, (3) Hamas’s ideology and policies (both generally and on discrete issues), (4) its leadership and organization, and (5) its sources of assistance. Finally, the report raises and discusses various legislative and oversight options related to foreign aid strategies, financial sanctions, and regional and international political approaches. In evaluating these options, Congress can assess how Hamas has emerged and adapted over time, and also scrutinize the track record of U.S., Israeli, and international policy to counter Hamas. Hamas is a Palestinian Islamist military and sociopolitical movement that grew out of the Muslim Brotherhood. The United States, Israel, the European Union, and Canada consider Hamas a terrorist organization because of (1) its violent resistance to what it deems Israeli occupation of historic Palestine (constituting present-day Israel, West Bank, and Gaza Strip), and (2) its rejection of the off-and-on peace process involving Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) since the early 1990s. Since Hamas’s inception in 1987, it has maintained its primary base of political support and its military command in the Gaza Strip—a territory it has controlled since June 2007—while also having a significant presence in the West Bank.

  • News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
The Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center News of Terrorism and the Israeli- Palestinian Conflict (September 1-6, 2010) Hamas spokesman Musheir al-Masri extols the terrorist shooting attack in Judea and Samaria (Al-Jazeera TV, August 31, 2010). Overview This past week events focused on the relaunching of the direct talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in Washington. According to media reports, both sides agreed their objective was to formulate a "framework agreement" within a year which would define the principles of a resolution for the conflict and the establishment of a Palestinian state. George Mitchell, the American envoy to the Middle East, said that Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas had also agreed to meet in the Middle East on September 14 and 15, and that they would continue meeting every two weeks. The opening session was accompanied by shootin g attacks carried out by Hamas and targeting Israeli vehicles in Judea and Samaria: An attack southeast of Hebron killed four Israeli civilians. In another shooting attack in eastern Samaria two Israeli civilians were wounded. A shooting attack northeast of Ramallah did not result in casualties. Responsibility for the attacks, which were intended to disrupt 248-10 the relaunching of the talks, was claimed by Hamas, which also threatened to maintain a dialogue with Israel "with guns." 2 Important Terrorist Events Shooting Attacks in Judea and Samaria On the evening of August 31 an Israeli vehicle was shot at near the Bani Naim junction southeast of Kiryat Arba in Judea. The four Israeli civilians in the car were killed.

  • Israel Has Lost Any Sense of Moralıty and Become Golıath
ısrael HAS LOST ANY SENSE OF moralıtY AND BECOME golıaTH Hassan Ghani 12 February 2011 / Scotland Hassan Ghani (1985) is Scot of Pakistani origin. He is currently a cor- respondent of PressTV news channel based in London. He was free- lanced, and supplied material to BBC Scotland and Al Jazeera in the past, and has worked in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Gaza, Egypt and across Europe. Why did you join the Gaza Freedom Flotilla? What was your mo- tivation? As a correspondent for my channel, PressTV, it’s my job to cover significant events around the world. I’d already been sent on two aid convoys to Gaza that had departed by road from London. Having already been in contact with the IHH, which had been one of the organizers of Lifeline 3 Convoy led by Viva Palestina, it made sense for me to be onboard the Mavi Marmara and cover the story. Did you expect an Israeli attack before setting off? As you know, the Israeli authorities state that they warned in advance that they would not allow the Flotilla to go through. Israel was making all sorts of noises before our departure. They had shown to Israeli press the processing centres they had setup at Ashdod for the Flotilla passengers, and had leaked information about the military unit training to intercept us. However, my feeling was that this was probably just a rouse to scare off the Flotilla – a bluff in the hope that aid workers would back down in fear. If they did intercept the ships, we thought they would disable the engines or find some way of physically blocking the Flotilla’s path.

  • ENGAGE Briefing Note for Mps
ENGAGE Briefing note for MPs ‘The Gaza blockade, Israel and the storming of the Mavi Marmara and Gaza aid flotilla’ June 2010 For further information on this briefing note please contact ENGAGE on [email protected] This briefing document lays forth the destructive impact of the blockade on Gaza, the many recommendations of international aid agencies and the House’s select committee on Foreign Affairs on a reassessment of the UK’s Middle East policy as well as the policies of the Quartet (US, EU, UN and Russia), and in line with the EU’s European Neighbourhood Policy and the Union of the Mediterranean and the EU-Israel Association Agreement which forms the basis of developing bilateral relations between the EU and Israel. Since the raid on the Mavi Marmara on 31 st May 2010 by Israeli commandos who killed up to 19 aid activists as their vessel sailed in international waters carrying 10,000 tonnes of food and reconstruction aid to the people of Gaza, the international community and the UN have decried the ongoing blockade as ‘unsustainable’ and ‘inhumane’. As the UK government awaits the outcome of an independent inquiry into the catastrophic events of Monday 31 st May 2010, consistent with the UN’s calls for a ‘full, credible, impartial and independent investigation’, attention must duly turn to the impact the blockade has had on Gazans these past three years, and its contribution to the thwarting of long term prospects for peace in the Middle East. Background - Timeline of events: Jan 2005 Hamas wins local elections gaining 75 seats out of 118 seats against Fatah's 26 seats in 10 districts across the Palestinian territories.

  • Palestinian Resistance and International Solidarity: the BDS Campaign ABIGAIL B
SAGE Los Angeles, London, New Delhi, Singapore, Washington DC Palestinian resistance and international solidarity: the BDS campaign ABIGAIL B. BAKAN and YASMEEN ABU-LABAN Abstract: Israel’s recent war in Gaza (‘Operation Cast Lead’) has both exposed Israel’s defiance of international law and provided the occasion for increasing support for an organised transnational boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement. The BDS movement is aimed at challenging the Israeli state’s ille- gal military occupation and a host of corresponding repressive policies directed at Palestinians. However, the BDS campaign, and in particular the call for an academic boycott, has been controversial. It has generated a counter-response emphasising, variously, the goals of the movement as ineffective, counter- productive to peace and/or security, contrary to norms of academic freedom and even tied to anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism. Utilising a Gramscian approach, and drawing from Charles Mills’ concept of ‘racial contract’, we examine the history of the divestment campaign and the debates it has engendered. We argue that the effectiveness of BDS as a strategy of resistance and cross-border solidarity is intimately connected with a challenge to the hegemonic place of Zionism in western ideology. This campaign has challenged an international Abigail Bakan is Professor of Political Studies at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. • The Next Viva Palestina Convoy to Gaza Has Been Brought Forward from September to the First Week of August
The next Viva Palestina convoy to Gaza has been brought forward from September to the first week of August; the question is, what are the real aims of the convoy, that on the face of it appears as being to carry 'aid' to Gaza? we say that it is the opposite of what the public claims are. The 'convoy' aims to prop up the legitimacy of the antiworker Egyptian regime, to prop up imperialism and to demobilise the world proletariat by misleading us all into believing that the Gaza siege has been broken; further, it turns the masses eyes away from the necessity of confronting imperialism, the ones who are behind the 62+ year siege against the Palestinians, through working class methods such as general strikes, etc. Every tablet or bag of flour is handed over either under the control of the Egyptian regime or of the fascist Israeli regime; in other words world imperialism still controls the fate of the Palestinians; in the last Galloway convoy it travelled under the direct support of the regional governor of Egypt in Sinai, who even offered to cover some (or all) of the convoy costs. What has forced the partial relaxation of the siege of Gaza has been protests and actions of millions of workers around the globe, not least in the imperialist centres; what is significant was the 1-2 week blockade of Israeli goods by scandanavian transport workers; what is significant is the mass revolt in Turkey against the complicity of their regime in the massacre of 9 Turkish activists (When the Israeli troops boarded the Mavi Marmara they knew the cabin number and names of all the peole on board; information they could only have received from the Turkish government); further the 8 general strikes in Greece, the revolt and burning of parliament in Kyrgyztsan are all factors which point to a turning point in working class resistance to the current imperialist onslaught.
