My Father’s side of the family came to Canada from the British Isles in the 1840’s and my maternal grandmother’s family settled in the Niagara region as United Empire Loyalists. My maternal grandfather was born in London, England and came to Toronto in 1912 along with his brother, three sisters and mother. As such, I grew up in an environment of great respect and affection for The Queen of Canada as our Head of State. As an adult, my news reporting and volunteer activities at a wide variety of functions attended by successive Lieutenant Governors over the last 22 years have given me insight into the important constitutional, community, ceremonial and other public responsibilities of this office.

The European Parliament is the European Community institution that represents the 492 million citizens of the 27 Member States of the European Union (EU). The European Parliament makes decisions on new European laws, jointly with the Council of the European Union (also known as the Council of Ministers).i The Parliament is the only directly elected body of the European Union. The Parliament and the Council also share authority over the annual budget of the EU. Current Membership of the European Parliament There are currently 785 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), representing the 27 countries currently in the EU. The proportion of women in the European Parliament has risen steadily. At present about one third of MEPs are women.ii Currently the UK has 78 elected MEPs, representing 12 regions, Wales represents one of these regions and has 4 MEPs. Each MEP in a region represents everyone in the region, so for people living in any part of Wales, all four Wales region MEPs represent them and people can contact any or all of the MEPs. PRINTED IN CANADA GST No. R108161779 Recycled Paper Papier Recycl6 ABSTRACTS South Korea's Foreign Policy and Future Security: Implications of the Nuclear Standoff Me1 Gurtov South Korea's foreign policy was significantly recast under the "Northern Policy" of Roh Tae Woo and the "new diplomacy" of Kim Young Sam. Spurred by rapid economic development and progress in democratizing politics, South Korea looked to break from policies dominated by the cold war and the major powers. Its initial successes, including accords reached in 1991 with North Korea on denuclearization and reconciliation, were significantly undermined by the ensuing controversy over Pyongyang's nuclear program. This article explores the setbacks that the nuclear dispute caused to South Korea's unification policy and its relations with the major powers, especially the United States. North Korea effectively used the nuclear card to enhance its legitimacy, deflect absorption by the South and deter the U.S. nuclear option. Nevertheless, in the aftermath of the dispute, opportunities exist to build on the US.-North Korea "Agreed Framework" and strengthen the peninsula's and regional security. Working from a "common-security" framework, the article proposes a number of ways -such as changes in U.S.
