I trust that the following pages will provide the information you need to consider thoughtfully and prayerfully if God would have you study here. Westminster is a thriving community seeking to understand the meaning of Scripture and apply it to all areas of life. We are guided in this work by three primary beliefs: ● First, we believe that Reformed theology, as defined by the Westminster Standards, most accurately represents the teachings of Scripture. We are therefore boldly committed to confessional, Reformed Christianity. ● Second, we believe that proper interpretation of Scripture requires careful scholarship. We are therefore deeply committed to academic excellence and a Christ-centered hermeneutic shaped by the Reformation principle of Sola Scriptura that flows from a conviction that the Bible is the infallible and inerrant Word of God. ● Third, we believe that genuine and effective gospel service requires a heart of love and devotion to Christ. We are therefore passionately committed to spiritual formation. These core beliefs undergird each degree program we offer as we seek to train leaders who are specialists in the Bible and equipped to proclaim the whole counsel of God for Christ and His global church. Our graduates serve all over the world as pastors, professors, missionaries, counselors, translators, church planters, and in many other capacities. -

Keys to Understanding Swiss Reformed Christianity” – A Short Presentation by the Reverend Catherine McMillan, Ambassador for the Reformation, Zürich Annual Gathering of the Baptist World Alliance on July 2, 2018 in Zürich Sisters and Brothers in Christ, welcome to Zürich! I bring you greetings on behalf of the Reformed Church of Switzerland. I hope that all of you have had safe journeys and that God will bless your time together. My job now is to help you to understand the church setting here. The majority Protestant church in Switzerland is the Reformed Church. 25% Reformed 37% Roman Catholic 24% with no religious affiliation 6% other Christian denominations 5% Muslim 1,5% other religions 2.4 million people belong to Reformed churches in Switzerland. The majority churches are steadily losing members and the sector with no religious affiliation is growing. But the Reformed and Catholic churches are widely respected and seen as playing a crucial role in society. With the territorial parish system they cover the whole country geographically. Each canton or state has its own Reformed Church with its own synod and board of executives. Since 1920 they have been loosely connected in the Federation of the Evangelical Reformed Churches of Switzerland. “Evangelical” means “Protestant” – Evangelisch. “Evangelikal” means “evangelical” the way the word is used in English. The Federation has 26 members. One of them is the Methodist Church of Switzerland. The others are cantonal Reformed churches. (Switzerland has 26 cantons) Many but not all of the cantonal churches receive tax money to keep their programs going, for example health and charity institutions, religious education, funerals, weddings and cultural events. -

Snyder Adapted with permission from Christian History Institute, 1995 Additional material from Foxe’s Book of Martyrs Scene 1 (Scene opens to John Foxe at a desk writing. Behind him are the men of the reformation are frozen. (Narrators come on and off stage and are dressed as monks.) John Foxe I am John Foxe, historian of sorts. I am writing the “History of the Acts and Monuments of the Church.” It is a record of those who have fulfilled Revelation. Monk I “They overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb And because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even unto death.” Rev 12:11 Foxe (Picking up the Bible) In the book of Matthew we read that Simon Peter was the first person to openly acknowledge Jesus as the Son of God and that Jesus, seeing God’s hand in this acknowledgement, said to Peter “upon this Rock I will build my church.” A church which the gates of hell would not be able to defeat. Monk 2 This indicates three things: First, that Christ will have a church in this world. Monk 1 Second, that the church would be persecuted not only by the world, but by all the powers of hell. Monk 2 Third, despite its persecutions the church would survive. -

• • HUMAN NATURE IN THE VALAIS 1 35 HUMAN NATURE IN THE VALAIS BY ARNOLD LUNN (The following article is the substance of an address given by the author to the Alpine Club on May 3, I955·) NTELLECTUAL fashions are as unpredictable as fashions in dress. Morgarten was as romantic in the eyes of the eighteenth-century intellectual as Marathon. If Gibbon had been a better German scholar he would have completed his study of the rise of Switzerland rather than written of the Decline of the Roman Empire. ' There is one theme,' he wrote in 1762, ' which I should prefer to all others, the history of the liberty of the Swiss, of that independence which a brave people rescued from the House of Austria, defended against the Dauphin of France, and finally sealed ~rith the blood of Charles of Burgundy.' For Wordsworth and Shelley it was not only Switzerland but the Swiss who were romantic, but when the common people began to invade the country, the intelligentsia transferred their worship to other shrines. ' Mont Blanc at sunset,' wrote Oscar Wilde, ' flushes like a rose with shame perhaps at the prevalence of the tourists.' There are, of course, tourists who would make any self-respecting mountain blush, but it is amusing to note that people who talk like this always regard themselves as exceptions to the general rule that Switzerland has been ruined by the influx of foreigners. The verdict of the intelligentsia on Switzerland is crystallised in a remark which Graham Greene attributes to one of his characters in The Third Man. -

To Our American Friends: Switzerland in the Second World War By Dr. Hans J. Halbheer, CBE Honorary Secretary of the American Swiss Foundation Advisory Council in Switzerland and a Visiting Scholar at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, California Dr. Halbheer wrote the following essay in 1999 to offer a Swiss perspective on some issues of the recent controversy to American friends of Switzerland. In addressing the arguments raised by U.S. critics of the role of Switzerland during the Second World War, I am motivated both by my feelings of friendship towards America and by my Swiss patriotism. For both of these reasons, I feel deeply hurt by both the charges against my country and the vehemence with which they have been expressed. During a recent period of residency at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, one of the leading U.S. think tanks, I sought to present my personal standpoint regarding the lack of understanding about Switzerland’s role during the Second World War in many discussions with Americans both young and old. On these occasions, I emphasized my awareness of the fact that the criticisms of Switzerland came only from a small number of Americans. Despite the settlement reached in August 1998 between the two major Swiss banks (Credit Suisse Group and UBS) and two Jewish organizations (the World Jewish Congress and the World Jewish Restitution Organization), the matter has still not run its course, although it has widely disappeared from the American media. Unfortunately, I must maintain that as a result of the generally negative portrayal of Switzerland over the past few years, the image of Switzerland has suffered. -

Haddington House Journal, 2005 Book Reviews Dictionary of Theological Terms: A ready reference of over 800 theological and doctrinal terms. Alan Cairns. Expanded Third Edition 2002 [Original 1982], Belfast/Greenville: Ambassador Emerald International, 2002, 538 pp., hc. ISBN 1-889893-72-2 This Dictionary of Theological Terms represents a large amount of labour on the part of the author, who is obviously a scholar of no mean ability. Rev. Cairns has pastored for over forty years in Northern Ireland and South Carolina and has lectured in systematic theology in the Theological Hall of the Free Presbyterian Church. The articles are largely, but not entirely, theological and are of unequal lengths. Cairns is thoroughly Calvinistic and gives some very fine entries on the various aspects of Reformed theology. In some ways the volume is as much a handbook on theology as a dictionary of theological terms – 125 Haddington House Journal, 2005 there is an evident intention to instruct and persuade the reader. As such it is a well conceived concept, for many who would never have the opportunity to look into volumes on church history or systematic theology might very well peruse a dictionary, yet it does not have the full scope that one might expect in a dictionary. In addition, the style is lucid and suited to the ordinary reader. Frequently in the course of a discussion one is helpfully referred to other topics for additional information. The entries generally reveal a decisive point of view, even in cases where Reformed people differ. For example, the creationist view on the origin of the soul is thoroughly rejected and the Traducionist espoused as the only tolerable one. -

The Westminster Assembly was an advisory body to England’s Long Parliament. ■ Their work was an effort to balance theology, politics and the daily realities of godly living: all in the midst of a violent Civil War. ■ It had been originally called to give advice about reforming the worship, doctrine and church government of the Church of England and to revise the Thirty-Nine Articles which set out what the Church of England believed. ■ The main work of the Assembly was done in producing a number of very important documents ■ A form of church government ■ 1645: A Directory for the Worship of God replaced the Book of Common Prayer ■ 1646: A Confession of Faith ■ 1647: The Larger and Smaller Catechism for teaching Biblical truths + History and Significance ■ The Westminster Standards are considered the most influential theological documents in the history of the Presbyterian Church ■ The Confession and Catechisms have played a foundational role in defining the English-speaking stream of the Reformed theological tradition. ■ In 1729 the Confession and Catechisms became the formal confession of faith of American Presbyterians when they were adopted by the Synod of Philadelphia. ■ Despite the complex history of Presbyterian splits and reunions, they remained the doctrinal standard of the major Presbyterian denominations in America until the UPCUSA (or “northern Presbyterian Church”) embraced a new understanding of the role of confessions with the adoption of a Book of Confessions in 1967. -
