We also look at improvements in our own operations, such as packaging, logistics and supply chain management. We believe that better use of information and communication technologies can contribute in a big way to 1.0 CEO’s Message 4 economic growth while offering considerable opportunities to cut greenhouse gas emissions and address global warming. That said, the full potential of mobility to help drive sustainability has yet to be realised. Last year had its challenges brought about by the global recession and changes in the mobile industry. Nokia is responding to the increasing consumer interest in features that are driven by innovations in software. As a result, we have been working hard to rebuild our R&D organization and define new ways of working. In early 2009, we announced voluntary measures aimed at reducing personnel-related costs and the need for involuntary layoffs. Thanks to cooperation with our employees, our programs were successful and of the reductions that we made in 2009, less than 25 percent were involuntary. On a more positive note, after several years favorable rating by the widely recognized Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes, this year Nokia was chosen as the “World Technology Supersector Leader.” This honor means Nokia was ranked No. 1 in sustainability across the entire global technology sector on the basis of a detailed corporate sustainability analysis. Nokia has a long track record of taking sustainability into account in the way we do business every day. For example, we regularly evaluate the use of water and materials, as well as our carbon dioxide emissions, across our supply chain. We have further broadened our environmental focus areas, with water and biodiversity issues growing in importance. In 2009, we continued to look at reducing the environmental impact of our devices and operations. For example, over the last decade, we have reduced the average no-load energy consumption of our chargers by more than 80 percent. In our best chargers, the reduction has been more than 95 percent. continued... Nokia sustainability report 1.0 Page 5 2009 CEO’s Message (continued) Navigation bar Since we created our climate strategy in 2006, we have looked at how our products, services, operations, facilities and the ways we work can contribute to a reduction in our CO2 emissions. It operated a luxury mobile phone brand called Vertu, founded by Frank Nuovo in the late 1990s, which pioneered the luxury mobile phone market by using precious materials such as diamonds, sapphires, titanium and exotic leather for phone production. The company enjoyed impressive growth in almost 70 countries and sold hundreds of thousands of phones in the eight years following its launch. On February 11, 2011, Stephen Elop, the new CEO who had been at the helm at Nokia for only five months, announced a new mobile strategy to adopt Microsoft’s new but unproven Windows Phone as its primary smartphone operating system. The market reacted poorly, and the company’s share price took a 14 per cent dive on the day of the announcement.

    Competing in Times of Convergence: The Use of Strategic Alliances by Nokia, Apple and Google By Marina Shchipanova Master of Science Strategic Market Creation 27 October 2009 Copenhagen Business School Supervisor: Sigvald Harryson Department of Innovation and Organizational Economics 1 RESUME This thesis is focused on how firms use strategic alliances when competing in converging environments. I use a case study approach, combined with the research method of abduction. The companies chosen for case studies are Nokia, Apple and Google. In the recent years they have made some strategic choices that resulted in them becoming direct competitors. The industry where they are facing each other is mobile Internet services. An important element of their related strategies has been the use of strategic alliances. My goal is to explore and understand the motives behind their alliance strategies in the context of convergence. As the theoretical base of this thesis, I utilize theories on convergence, strategic alliances, and the compound product-service offering framework. I identify main points that would help me address the research question. For the empirical base, I use information on the case companies‘ strategies related to the mobile Internet services. Through the lens of the above mentioned theories, I identify the main trends and offer explanations on the industry developments and the alliance strategies. The main findings of this thesis are: 1) The case companies are now in direct competition with each other within the mobile Internet services industry. 2) The industry is undergoing a turbulent stage, accompanied by a search for a dominant platform. 3) The case companies are actively forming alliances with companies that possess complementary competences in the context of the industry.
