(the Organizer) is requesting financial support up to $550,000 to offset costs of City services associated with hosting the 107th Grey Cup and Grey Cup Festival, taking place in Calgary from November 20 to 24, 2019. The Government of Alberta has committed $1.5 million and Tourism Calgary has committed $70,000 to support the successful and safe delivery of the events. In addition, a private sector contribution of $2 million is forecasted. The projected economic outcomes for the 2019 Grey Cup (projected from 2018 Grey Cup actuals, see Attachment 1) include: overall attendance at Grey Cup events of up to 500,000 people, an estimated television audience of 9 million Canadian viewers, 1,000 volunteer opportunities, $29 million in local spending from an anticipated 30,000 out-of- region visitors, $63 million in total economic activity in Calgary, and $81 million in total economic activity in Canada. For Immediate Release Wednesday, November 13, 2019 Calgary, AB – The City of Calgary, Greater Calgary Amateur Football Association, Calgary Minor Soccer Association, Calgary Blizzard Soccer Club and the Calgary Stampeder Football Club announced today plans for the 2019 Grey Cup Legacy Project. The groups have teamed up in the pursuit of funds to provide an air-supported shelter for one of the turf fields at Shouldice Athletic Park. The seasonal shelter will provide a place to play for teams during the winter months in Calgary. “The seasonal shelter is an opportunity for The City of Calgary to utilize an existing outdoor recreation facility year-round. The shelter pilots an exciting financial framework for future facilities in line with The City’s partnership approach to service delivery. This shelter is the result of years of hard work among our partners to ensure the needs of citizens are served,” said City of Calgary Councillor Ward Sutherland The inflatable shelter will be available during the months of October to May, thereby maximizing the use of this field year-round. The shelter is projected to provide an estimated 1,850 hours of programmable time for sports groups in Calgary. Funding for the project is being raised and provided by The City of Calgary, Greater Calgary Amateur Football Association, Calgary Minor Soccer Association, Calgary Blizzard Soccer Club and the Calgary Stampeders Foundation.
