The Grey Cup Festival was born in 1948 when Calgarians boarded a train to Toronto and injected our western hospitality into the Championship game. It forever changed the spirit of Grey Cup weekend and we look forward to paying homage to this history while taking this tradition to a whole new level! Hosted at the world-famous Stampede Park, the 2019 Grey Cup Festival runs Wednesday night through Saturday night and will be the biggest yet! The fun continues Sunday, November 24th at McMahon Stadium with tailgate parties for fans of all ages and, of course, the 107th Grey Cup presented by Shaw. We thank the Government of Alberta, the City of Calgary, Tourism Calgary and all of our partners for their invaluable support. A special tip of the hat to more than 800 volunteers for their dedication and energy in showcasing Calgary’s warm, Western hospitality. There is nothing like the Grey Cup to bring people together and create those magical moments that we cherish as fans. Energy drives Calgary in every way. Our people work and lead with energy and enthusiasm, our events are driven by energy and passion, energy inspires innovation and entrepreneurship and is why Calgary is rated in the top 5 most livable cities in the world. We invite all citizens of Calgary, guests travelling to Calgary and business partners of the CFL to come and “Experience the Energy” of Calgary and the Grey Cup. Mike Franco Chairman, 2019 Grey Cup Festival 5 heart Before the final whistle blows, discover Calgary beyond all the face paint and glitter wigs. Check us out at visitcalgary.com 1 A MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER OF ALBERTA Welcome to Alberta for the 107th Grey Cup! We are proud to host the second straight Grey Cup game, after Edmonton did a brilliant job of hosting Canadian football fans last year in a game won by the Calgary Stampeders. Alberta has always been at the heart of the Canadian Football League. Not only do we field two legendary teams, but because Alberta has welcomed hundreds of thousands of newcomers from across Canada, every CFL team has a big squad of fans at games played in Commonwealth and McMahon Stadiums. It was Albertans who turned the Cup into a week long national party at the famous 1948 game hosted by Toronto. We hope to live up to that reputation this week in Calgary. In such a big, diverse country, it is key that we have national events and symbols that bring us together. That’s why the Grey Cup is more than just a game. As we gather on another cold November day to watch great football, we show the world yet again that we are the North, and we are proud of this great tradition of sportsmanship that brings us together from coast to coast. Hon Jason Kenney PREMIER OF ALBERTA A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR NENSHI On behalf of the citizens of Calgary and my City Council colleagues, it is my pleasure to welcome you all to Calgary for the 2019 Grey Cup Championship & Festival! We are thrilled to be your hosts for the Grey Cup Championship Game and all the festivities that go along with it. It has been 10 years since our city last had the honour of welcoming athletes and fans to this incredible event. Calgarians have a strong love of sport and, of course, football. We’re honoured to once again welcome folks from across the country back to Calgary to watch the best in the CFL compete for the Grey Cup. Fans know that the Grey Cup is about more than one day - the Grey Cup Festival has you covered all week long. Starting with the Grey Cup arrival party at Olympic Plaza on November 19, through to Game Day on November 24 there is no shortage of exciting events to celebrate the 107 years of the Grey Cup, including the first ever Grey Cup Rodeo. For those of you visiting Calgary, I hope you have the opportunity to take in all that our city has to offer from incredible shopping and dining, to the community spirit Calgarians are known for. I wish the best of luck to the competing teams and, again, extend a warm welcome to our guests. Sincerely, Naheed K. Nenshi MAYOR FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE IS THE BEST OFFENSE. IT WORKS. The final approved budget for the stadium revitalization project was $563 million. The project was completed $49 million under budget primarily through savings achieved during the Phase 2 Retractable Roof project. BC Place was revitalized in two stages over a period of more than three years, involving more than 5000 skilled professionals and tradespeople. BC Place was awarded ‘Project of the Year’ at the StadiumBusiness Awards in Italy, in May 2012. Furthermore, the Rick Hansen foundation recently featured BC Place as an “Accessible Success Story” - for ‘new accessible features of a community facility’. Reopening September 30, 2011, the new BC Place became the new home to Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and home to the returning BC Lions Football Club and the BC Sports Hall of Fame.
