The 48 Stars That People Like Less Than Anne Hathaway by Nate Jones
The 48 Stars That People Like Less Than Anne Hathaway By Nate Jones Spend a few minutes reading blog comments, and you might assume that Anne Hathaway’s approval rating falls somewhere between that of Boko Haram and paper cuts — but you'd actually be completely wrong. According to E-Poll likability data we factored into Vulture's Most Valuable Stars list, the braying hordes of Hathaway haters are merely a very vocal minority. The numbers say that most people actually like her. Even more shocking? Who they like her more than. In calculating their E-Score Celebrity rankings, E-Poll asked people how much they like a particular celebrity on a six-point scale, which ranged from "like a lot" to "dislike a lot." The resulting Likability percentage is the number of respondents who indicated they either "like" Anne Hathaway or "like Anne Hathaway a lot." Hathaway's 2014 Likability percentage was 67 percent — up from 66 percent in 2013 — which doesn't quite make her Will Smith (85 percent), Sandra Bullock (83 percent), Jennifer Lawrence (76 percent), or even Liam Neeson (79 percent), but it does put her well above plenty of stars whose appeal has never been so furiously impugned on Twitter. Why? Well, why not? Anne Hathaway is a talented actress and seemingly a nice person. The objections to her boiled down to two main points: She tries too hard, and she's overexposed. But she's been absent from the screen since 2012'sLes Misérables, so it's hard to call her overexposed now. And trying too hard isn't the worst thing in the world, especially when you consider the alternative. -

TV TVMovie MOVIE Beta_GoodWitchDestiny_2S.indd 1 10.09.13 17:10 There’s something definitely magical about Cassie Nightingale. But when even her loved ones start to wonder how Cassie seems to know everything and be everywhere, the good witch senses that she’s in for a rough ride... It begins with stepdaughter Lori’s writing project, the story of the Grey Lady who once lived in their house many years ago – and who shared more than the same birthday and an amazing physical likeness with Cassie. Then Drew arrives in Middleton, a boastful young man prone to investing fortunes into hopeless scams and blaming others when his projects fail. The person responsible – in his eyes – for his current fiasco and his fiancée’s break-up with him is Cassie. And the vibes he is sending out in her direction are definitely laced with danger. Lori then discovers the Grey Lady’s journal which suddenly breaks off on her birthday, which is also Cassie’s. As her family fears for her safety, Cassie resolves to clear up the hocus-pocus concerning Drew and the Grey Lady with a tried-and-true method: humor, openness and the acceptance of one’s destiny. Hate Crime in the Believer
Nihilism and Mistaken Identity: (Self)Hate Crime in The Believer By Paul J. Kaplan, PhD Program in Criminal Justice in the School of Public Affairs San Diego State University Through an analysis of the (2001) film The Believer, this paper develops a theory of (self)hate crime. In The Believer, the young protagonist Danny Balint is a Jew who hates Jews. I argue that in Danny’s mind ‘Jewishness’ stands for the indeterminacy of postmodern human social life. In my analysis, Danny’s hatred emerges out of a desperate and deeply modernist search for an essential identity, an identity not offered by the postmodern world of what Danny perceives to be ‘nothingness without end.’ This analysis deepens current theories of hate crime by proposing that the bigotry and strain that purportedly underlie white hate crime can be better understood as an existential crisis in the face of radical indeterminacy. Keywords: “The Believer,” Hate crime, Postmodernism, Indeterminacy, Existential Crisis, Cultural Criminology. Take the great Jewish minds: Marx, Freud, Einstein. What have they given us: communism, infantile sexuality and the atom bomb. In a mere three centuries since these guys emerged from the ghettos of Europe, they’ve taken us from a world built on order and reason and hurled us into a chaos of class warfare, irrational urges and relativity, a world where the very existence of matter and meaning is in doubt. Why? Because it is the deepest impulse of the Jewish soul to unravel the very fabric of life until nothing is left but thread, nothing but nothingness. Nothingness without end . -

The Believer Abstract This is a review of The Believer (2001). This film er view is available in Journal of Religion & Film: https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/jrf/vol7/iss2/9 Martin: The Believer Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, The Believer is a daring portrayal of a young Jewish man living a hopeless contradiction as a neo-Nazi. Darkly disturbing at times with its ironies, the film is ultimately an exposé into warped double mindedness and the spiritual hell reserved for its suitors. Danny Balint (boldly played by Ryan Gosling) is a twenty-two year old man with TNT in his veins who belies a youth that found him a star pupil in Jewish grade school. As a rising star in New York City's fascist circles, Danny finds purpose in attacking synagogues and spewing hateful rhetoric among a devoted band of followers. But, while directing all his reserves toward destroying impure races, Danny is wooed back to Judaism in positively schizoid ways. -
