Pauley, Committee Director Dr. Nicki LoCascio, Committee Member Dr. Jeffrey May, Committee Member May 2006 Keywords: Pseudacris feriarum, Natural History, Phenology, Amphibian Declines Copyright © 2006 i Abstract Natural History of the Upland Chorus Frog, Pseudacris feriarum Baird, in West Virginia by Jaime Sias Chapter 1 is a literature review of Pseudacris feriarum, largely based on published P. triseriata Complex species accounts. Chapter 2 presents the natural history of P. feriarum in West Virginia and compares some parameters with other Pseudacris species. Chapter 3 looks at the phenology of a wetland in eastern West Virginia. Chapter 4 examines the current range of P. feriarum and compares it with the historical range in the state. Finally, hypotheses are given as to why Upland Chorus Frogs have declined in West Virginia. All information obtained from this study should be used to create a management plan for the conservation of all present and future P. feriarum populations. ii Acknowledgments I first want to thank Dr. Pauley for taking me under his “wing.” When I joined his lab, the only herps I could identify were newts and box turtles. I quickly learned that he was always available and that I could go to him for anything. He always offered guidance, suggestions and opinions all the while with a smile on his face. Surveys of Madison County for choruses of the frogs located seven choruses. Choruses previously reported at Granite City and South Roxana were not relocated and are thought to be extirpated. We estimated population size to be 420 frogs in April 1994 with a juvenile survivorship of 4.5%. Mean distance for 20 recaptured frogs from point of initial capture was 0.52 km with a range of 0 to 0.9 km. Habitat preference for 48 frogs found on roads appeared to be for old field habitats in preference to areas of agriculture or lawns.

    MERCURY IN NORTHERN GREEN FROGS AND SNAPPING TURTLES FROM ONONDAGA LAKE, NEW YORK Prepared by the New York Field Office of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service December 2015 For the Onondaga Lake Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration Trustee Council i ABSTRACT This study was conducted to develop an initial understanding of the exposure of amphibians and reptiles at Onondaga Lake to mercury (Hg). Mercury in Onondaga Lake northern green frogs is within the range of Hg concentrations shown to affect metamorphosis and survival of southern leopard frog tadpoles and metamorphs, but less than concentrations associated with effects in wood frogs and American toads. Mercury in the toenails and blood of snapping turtles from Onondaga Lake was significantly higher than Hg in the toenails and blood of Hamlin Wildlife Management Area (reference area) snapping turtles. Onondaga Lake snapping turtles have more Hg in their keratinous tissue (toenails) than other snapping turtles sampled across New York State, but less Hg than found in keratinous tissues of snapping turtles from a Hg-contaminated area in Virginia. Snapping turtles appear fairly resistant to Hg, but the Hg concentrations found in Onondaga Lake snapping turtles are within the range of concentrations associated with altered thyroid function and immune suppression in other turtle species. Although the diversity of amphibians and reptiles has increased at Onondaga Lake over the past two decades, the herpetofaunal diversity and population densities remain lower than in surrounding areas. This study shows that Hg may be a factor inhibiting the reproduction and health of some amphibians and reptiles at Onondaga Lake.
