  • A Note on Flint-Locks, and the Flintlock
ASAC_Vol105_05-Gooding_110015.qxp 10/5/12 2:23 PM Page 29 A Note on Flint-locks, and the Flintlock By S. James Gooding* In this publication, “flintlock” or “French lock” will be used to identify the flint mechanism with a joined hammer and pan cover (frizzen), an internal mainspring, and a vertical act- ing sear working on a notched tumbler. This is based upon Urquhardt’s translation from the Swedish of Torsten Lenk’s Flintlaset, All other flint-using locks will be recognized as flint- locks, with a modifier if more precise identification is required. In the study of firearms history, early arms terminology has been accurately adopted by some historians, but just as frequently it has been changed by some writers to suit the occasion. When starting to pull this ‘talk’ together I dug out some previously unpublished notes dated as early as 1982 on the same theme with the title “A Snaphance by any other name would still be a Flint Lock.”One of them had a subtitle based on an old expression often used by my mother “Fools rush in, where angels fear to tread.” Perhaps it is a fool’s errand to attempt to make changes to more than 300 years of language evolution but I believe it is worth a try. Early gun locks can readily be placed in the order of evolution based upon the four major sources for ignition; express the differences between ‘flint lock,’ ‘flint-lock’ and ‘flintlock’? 1. Match, 2. Pyrites, 3. Flint, 4. Fulminate This paper will look at the English language and how it The matchlock with its smoldering match, the wheel- has adapted some foreign vocabulary to put names to the lock with its pyrites and wheel, and the many forms of per- flint-using ignitions.

It fossilizes as subsequent researchers use it to interpret their data and as it develops into part of the foundation of knowledge used to build the history of the subject under study. This "house of cards" appears stable to the builders, since their preconceptions color their interpretations of the documentary sources and any aberrations are rationalized. For these researchers, it no longer seems necessary to re- examine the primary evidence for flaws because everything seems to fit. Such is the case in the history and development of early seventeenth-century English firearms. The few extant examples attributed to pre-1650 are used repeatedly in the literature as typological benchmarks against which newly- constructionally-related flint-and-steel ignition systems. discovered weapons or excavated gunlock parts are These gunlock types are defined as evolutionary measured. I. Documentary Evidence from Medieval Welsh Poetry1 By Ifor Edwards DESPITE certain variations from early times, the continuation of the traditional form of patronage of the Welsh poets into medieval times ensured a continuity of poetry which varied mainly in its subject matter and form of poetic conceit only. The pattern of Welsh life—of uchelwyr (noblemen) and beirdd teulu (family poets)—was a development over the centuries from the days of the Welsh princes through the period of the Norman Conquest, when the poets were absorbed into the changing fabric of the new society almost unaltered. Patronage by the uchelzvyr existed before 1282—a memorable year for Welsh history in the reign of Edward I—but was overshadowed by that of the princes. After that date the uchelwyr were not bound by law to support the poets, and hence the poets had no legal status.

  • The Report of the Council
The Report of the Council October 17, 1984 JL/uRiNG THE PAST Several years the Council has been dcware that the complexity and pace of activities at the Society have been rising at such a rate that the members of our out- standing staff, as well as our finances, could not long maintain them without more help. The 1983-84 fiscal year appears to have marked the watershed in that process. If any single event signaled the fact, it was the retirement of Frederick E. Bauer from the post of associate librarian. He came to the Society from Mount Hermon School where he taught, administered, and served as librarian from 1947 until 1970. He was trained in economic history, political science, and library science at Prince- ton and Columbia universities and is the author of two text- books published by D. C. Heath Co., Liberty and Power in the Making of the Constitution ( 1963) and Democracy in the Age of Jackson ( 1965). In 1970 Bauer served as a State Department consultant on secondary education in Ghana and in Morocco. A member of the Massachusetts Historical Society and sometime president of the Holden Historical Society, he has long been active in local historical groups. In 1977, Bauer received an award of merit from the American Association for State and Local History for the Bicentennial program 'Get Smart About Holden.' At AAS, Fred Bauer attended to myriad duties ranging from cataloguing by computer to helping watch over the boilers. Preservation of research materials is a particular interest of his. He played a leading part in the planning and execution of such activities here at AAS and served for several years on the advi- sory board at the Northeast Document Conservation Center.

  • The Morion: an Introduction to Its Development, Form, & Function
ASAC_Vol105_03-Tavares_120008.qxd 9/29/12 4:32 PM Page 2 The Morion: An Introduction to its Development, Form, & Function By Jonathan Tavares The helmet type known as a morion has become an iconic symbol of the Renaissance soldier. It is defined in its classic combed form by a distinct symmetry and balance between a crescent-shaped comb rising from a rounded bowl and a swept brim drawn up to points at the front and back (Figure 1). For many it evokes the swashbuckling Spanish conquistador, an image reinforced by Hollywood films such as The Captain from Castile (1947), and echoed in objects like the stream-lined hood ornament on the 1951 De Soto (Figure 2). Although the morion has become an essential prop in period dramas, neither its design—an ingenious interplay between form and function—nor its cul- tural resonance are fully understood or appreciated. As a light and serviceable head piece, the morion was so successful that it can be considered the first international helmet form, adopted by sixteenth-century men-at-arms, merchants, and colonists from Sweden to Italy and from Portugal to Eastern Austria. Excavated remains of late six- teenth-early seventeenth century morions have been found Figure 1.
