Southern Georgian Bay represents one of the most significant historical destinations in Canada. The home to First Nations dates back to more than 10,000 years. The arrival of French explorers, because of the Huron-Ouendat people, created the earliest inland settlement in North America. Their arrival can be traced to Samuel de Champlain and the French Jesuits arriving in the early 17th century. Each of the communities (Lafontaine, Midland, Penetanguishene, Port McNicoll, Victoria Harbour and Waubaushene) has its own characteristics however they all have one thing in common: the fresh water of Georgian Bay, originally named La Mer Douce by Samuel de Champlain. Trapping, trading, and hunting continued into the 1600’s as the major source of commerce between the French and First Nations. With the loss of French colonies as a result of the Seven Year War and the Louisiana Purchase, a significant English population began arriving in the Southern Georgian Bay area. The Martyrs’ Shrine is a national shrine dedicated to faithfully telling the story of and promoting devotion to Saints Jean de Brebeuf, Isaac Jogues and their Companions. It is situated in the heart of Huronia in the Archdiocese of Toronto, and is directed by The Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The Shrine is built on the sacred ground where these Martyrs lived and died, and where the first Christians of Huronia – The Wendat and the French – found a house of prayer and a home of peace. The Shrine honours and teaches how their lives of sacrifice and prayer can still be an inspiration for all pilgrims through the universal love of Jesus Christ. The Shrine has become a place where pilgrims come to pray, deepen their faith lives and be transformed. The love, peace and healing of Christ, which makes the Shrine a Home of Peace, is available for all who come, Christian or not, and for all to share this message with others when they return to their homes.
