A Strange Loop
A Strange Loop / Who we are Our vision We believe in theater as the most human and immediate medium to tell the stories of our time, and affirm the primacy and centrality of the playwright to the form. Our writers We support each playwright’s full creative development and nurture their unique voice, resulting in a heterogeneous mix of as many styles as there are artists. Our productions We share the stories of today by the writers of tomorrow. These intrepid, diverse artists develop plays and musicals that are relevant, intelligent, and boundary-pushing. Our plays reflect the world around us through stories that can only be told on stage. Our audience Much like our work, the 60,000 people who join us each year are curious and adventurous. Playwrights is committed to engaging and developing audiences to sustain the future of American theater. That’s why we offer affordably priced tickets to every performance to young people and others, and provide engaging content — both onsite and online — to delight and inspire new play lovers in NYC, around the country, and throughout the world. Our process We meet the individual needs of each writer in order to develop their work further. Our New Works Lab produces readings and workshops to cultivate our artists’ new projects. Through our robust commissioning program and open script submission policy, we identify and cultivate the most exciting American talent and help bring their unique vision to life. Our downtown programs …reflect and deepen our mission in numerous ways, including the innovative curriculum at our Theater School, mutually beneficial collaborations with our Resident Companies, and welcoming myriad arts and education not-for-profits that operate their programs in our studios. -
Introducing New Surflight Theatre
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Surflight Theatre Press Director Charlie Siedenburg, 551-655-0968 BROADWAY PRODUCER ROY MILLER NAMED SURFLIGHT THEATRE PRODUCER Broadway producer (and Surflight alum) joins notable New Jersey summer destination – Surflight Theatre during exciting transitional period. BEACH HAVEN, NJ, Tuesday, September 21, 2010 — Surflight Theatre Board President Gene Hammond announced today that Broadway producer (and Surflight alum) Roy Miller has been appointed to the leadership position of Producer at Surflight Theatre. A New Jersey native, Miller’s Broadway producing credits include the current revival of West Side Story (Tony nomination for Best Musical Revival and Grammy Award Winner for Best Musical Show Album), The Drowsy Chaperone (winner of five 2006 Tony Awards; Drama Desk and NY Drama Critics’ Circle Awards for Best Musical), and The Pee-wee Herman Show (opening October 26). Before crossing the river to New York, Miller was Associate Producer of the acclaimed Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ, from 1991 to 2004 where he produced over eighty musicals and plays including Animal Crackers starring Kristin Chenoweth, Follies starring Ann Miller, Gypsy starring Betty Buckley and Deborah Gibson, and Stephen Schwartz’s new musical Children of Eden . Miller may be new to the leadership of Surflight, but he is no stranger to the Beach Haven theatre's 450- seat venue. While performing in a high school production of Funny Girl in his hometown of Irvington, NJ, Miller was offered an apprenticeship at Surflight by the show’s director and Surflight founder Joseph P. Hayes. That first introduction to summer theatre at the Jersey Shore in 1975 was followed by two subsequent seasons as an apprentice and, eventually, as a member of the acting company in 1978. -

Racial Justice Through Class Solidarity Within Communities of Color
The Community-Building Project: Racial Justice Through Class Solidarity Within Communities of Color Joseph Erasto Jaramillot INTRODUCTION As people of color continue to face racial and socioeconomic subordination in this country, one wonders when, if ever, the "elusive quest for racial justice"' will end. Intellectuals dedicated to the pursuit of racial justice have focused their work on unmasking the operation of racism and white privilege and recognizing the perspectives of the oppressed. One central insight of this approach is the need to take race into account when analyzing the application of supposedly "race neutral" but so often racially discriminatory criteria. This strategy provides a theoretical basis for transforming society's view of racism and race relations. However, until the dominant culture becomes genuinely receptive to these ideas, communities of color will continue to suffer.2 Indeed, current political discourse adds fuel Copyright 0 1996 by Joseph Jaramillo. t Joseph Erasto Jaramillo received his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), and his B.A. from the University of California at Davis. He is currently a staff attorney at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) in San Francisco. He completed this Comment before he joined MALDEF. He would like to thank Professor Jerome McCristal Culp, Jr., of Duke University School of Law for his insight, former La Raza Law Journal Co- Editor-in-Chief Robert Salinas for his assistance and support, and Susana Martinez and Robby Mockler for their helpful editing and feedback. This Comment is dedicated to the committed gente of La Raza Law Students Association at Boalt Hall and all other schools, who give true meaning to the word "community." 1. -

Downloaded by [New York University] at 12:57 13 August 2016 the HOARDING IMPULSE
Downloaded by [New York University] at 12:57 13 August 2016 THE HOARDING IMPULSE There has been an increased awareness of hoarding in recent years, but clinical treatments aimed at helping people with this condition often have low success rates. In The Hoarding Impulse Renee M. Winters explores how depth psychology can enrich current conceptual models and treatment standards for compulsive hoarding. The book presents case studies of prominent sufferers including Edie and Edith Beale, the Collyer Brothers, and Andy Warhol and explores common themes of loss, shame and object clusters. Winters sets out to provide a clear understanding of a hoarder’s lived experiences and their core schemas of value, worth and personal identity, revealing a direct connection to excessive acquisition of objects. She illuminates the process of how objects can come to possess a hoarder and become not only their main source of happiness but also part of their identity and in doing so puts forward a new treatment plan based on providing a deeper understanding of and potent treatment approach to what is a core issue for hoarding individuals: the wounding of the soul. This new perspective to treating individuals who hoard helps them in the long term understand their processes, value system, and struggles with negative interpersonal relationships. Downloaded by [New York University] at 12:57 13 August 2016 Providing a fascinating insight into the psyche of people who struggle with hoarding, this book will be essential reading for depth psychologists, Jungian psychotherapists, psychiatrists, social workers, students of analytical psychology and anyone interested in understanding the dynamics of this complex condition. -

The world watches the impossible: Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat, standing together in the White House Rose Garden, signing the first ever peace agreement between Israel and the PLO. How were the negotiations kept secret? Why were they held in a castle in the middle of Norway? And who are these mysterious negotiators? A darkly comic epic, OSLO tells the true, but until now, untold story of how one young couple, Norwegian diplomat Mona Juul (to be played by Jennifer Ehle) and her husband social scientist Terje Rød-Larsen (to be played by Jefferson Mays), planned and orchestrated top-secret, high-level meetings between the State of Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization, which culminated in the signing of the historic 1993 Oslo Accords. -
