  • LTUE 27 = 2009 Program Book
Letter from the Chairs Faculty, Students, and community— Welcome everyone to another wonderful year for the Life, the Universe, & Everything Symposium. Now in our 27th year, we are excited to be around and looking forward to the future, with a great nod of thanks to our past. This year we’ve really had to look back to our roots, finding the core of what LTU&E truly stands for, and realizing the great debt that we owe to our founders—the amazing group of students and faculty who got LTU&E started. While I suspect that many of them would be surprised at how we have changed over the years—let alone lasting this long—I hope they are proud of what we are. LTU&E is still a wonderful forum of thought, a vast gathering of great ideas and interests, bringing together successful professionals and struggling beginners alike to expand their knowledge of not only the world around them, but also how it could be and how to share that idea. Through the study of science fiction and fantasy, we really do connect with life, the universe, and everything. In the annual struggle to prepare for the symposium, we ran across a great number of unexpected obstacles, driving us to great lengths and calling upon all our resources, even so far as to contact members from those early LTU&E committees for assistance. Fortunately, we’ve been blessed with an amazing committee this year as well. Each of them has put in what I would have believed to be inhumane amounts of effort to help this 2009 symposium come together.

  • Letter from the Chair
Letter from the Chair When you really consider the vast scope of what we set out to discuss here at LTU&E, the mind boggles. The purview of this symposium, now cele- brating its 29th year, encompasses every discipline to some degree. But who are we to feel that we can even begin to comprehend it all? Surely only folly or hubris would drive us to such an undertaking. Far be it, actually. When you work with science fiction and fantasy you push the limits of the imagination, you engage in thought experiments that probe the foundations of human experience, and you wrestle with life, the universe, and everything. That’s why, for nearly three decades, students and faculty have labored to bring together great minds to further serious academic discussion of specu- lative fiction—and have some fun while we’re at it, I hope. Whether you’re a professional or an amateur, a scholar or an enthusiast, a presenter or a participant, we’re glad you’re here. We can’t do this without the support of many people. Personally, I’d like to thank my fellow committee members, many of whom knew much more than I about organizing this event, and all of whom were invaluable to this effort. We’d like to thank our faculty advisor, Eric Fielding, for helping us over- come some tricky obstacles that arose while planning this year’s symposium. Thanks also to Steve Keele for a beautiful poster graphic and Jess Smart Smiley for the program book cover art. As all of our returning attendees and guests can tell, we’ve changed ven- ues this year.

  • Letter from the Chair
Letter from the Chair Welcome to the symposium. If you have been here before, welcome back. If this is your first time, then welcome for the first time. I hope you enjoy yourselves. The symposium is a great and magical thing and I hope you all appreciate that. There may be nowhere else in the world that has quite the unique blend of science fiction and fantasy, academics, and Mormonism. More amazing still is the way that the symposium brings people in and keeps them here. There are people here who have been attending Life, the Uni- verse, & Everything since its inception. There are many more who started attending during thefi th year. Or the tenth. Or twentieth. Or twenty-fith. They’re still here. I have this grand hope that someday I will meet someone at the symposium who is a time traveler from the future who decided that he had to be at all the symposia and has been jumping from year to year so that by this point, he has been at Life, the Universe, & Everything for several months straight. Admittedly, in my dream, this man has showered. By illustration, allow me to share the story of how I came to be involved in the symposium. My father is Jonathan Langford, a previous chair of this fine symposium. He and my mother met at Quark, BYU’s science fiction club. Throughout my childhood, I heard stories about the symposium. I heard about past guests. I heard about interesting speakers. I even heard about the people whom my father ran the symposium with, some of which are still helping to run the symposium.
