  • Chiappino Vitelli and Federico Zuccari at the Court of Queen Elizabeth I
4 / 2020 The Journal for Renaissance and Early Modern Diplomatic Studies Francesca Mavilla h ttps://orcid.org/0000-0003-2037-8329 PROMOTING AN ARTIST AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF DIPLOMATIC NETWORKING: CHIAPPINO VITELLI AND FEDERICO ZUCCARI AT THE COURT OF QUEEN ELIZABETH I Abstract In the fi eld of study on relations between Italy and Flanders in the second half of the sixteenth century, the military leader Gian Luigi, better known as Chiappino, Vitelli (1520–75) deserves special attention. Trusted man of Cosimo I de’ Medici and maestro di campo generale of the Spanish armies in Flanders since 1567, he was among the protagonists of the fi rst ten years of the Dutch Revolt. Based on the identifi cation of new archival documents, this essay aims both to broaden the sphere of investigation and deepen the understanding of the role of Chiappino in cultural exchanges between Florence, the Habsburg’s and Elizabeth I’s courts. At the same time, it is aimed to draw attention to the political and cultural dynamics in which Chiappino Vitelli’s action towards the English Queen is embedded. From the documents, it clearly emerges how Vitelli took advantage of his role to earn the favour of the sovereign and, in addition to his loyalty, he did not hesitate to off er her the most varied of gifts, such as animals, weapons and artists, such as the painter Federico Zuccari, who reached Flanders in 1574. Zuccari’s sending to the English court should be interpreted as an attempt by the military leader to gain the favour of Elizabeth I when the support of the courts of Florence and Madrid seemed to be lacking, especially after the death of Cosimo de’ Medici and the replacement of the Duke of Alba as governor of Flanders.

  • Bibliography on the History of the Society of Jesus 20191
Archivum Historicum Societatis Iesu vol. lxxxviii, fasc. 176 (2019-II) Bibliography on the History of the Society of Jesus 20191 Wenceslao Soto Artuñedo SJ A collaboration between Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu, Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies (Boston College) and Jesuitica Project (KU Leuven) The “Bibliography on the History of the Society of Jesus” was first produced for AHSI by László Polgár SJ, spanning fifty issues of the journal, between 1952 and 2001. The Bibliography was resumed in 2006 by Paul Begheyn SJ, who was its author until 2018. With appreciation and esteem for Fr Begheyn’s significant contribution to this enterprise, the collaborators on the “Bibliography on the History of the Society of Jesus 2019” enter a new phase of the Bibliography’s production, incorporating for the first time three distinct and interconnected outlets for exploring the bibliographical riches of Jesuit history: -Bibliography on the History of the Society of Jesus, by Wenceslao Soto Artuñedo SJ, in print and online annually, Archivum Historicum Societatis Iesu: http://www.sjweb.info/arsi/en/publications/ahsi/ bibliography/ -Jesuit Online Bibliography, a free, searchable collection of Jesuit Studies Scholarship through the Portal to Jesuit Studies: https:// jesuitonlinebibliography.bc.edu/ -Jesuitica, a collaborative initiative from KU Leuven and the Jesuit Region ELC to facilitate academic research on the Maurits Sabbe Library’s Jesuitica book collections: https://www.jesuitica.be/ The 2019 Bibliography introduces some changes to the bibliographical styling and criteria for inclusion of works. As in previous years, in order to provide continuity with Fr Polgár’s work, it incorporates titles dated from 2000.

  • Holland As a Political Model in Italy in the Seventeenth Century*
Holland as a Political Model In Italy In the Seventeenth Century* SALva MASTELLONE The political institutions of one country can become a political model for other countries. England became a political model in Europe during the eighteenth cen tury: Voltaire and Montesquieu presented the monarchy of England as the con stitutional example to be followed in order to avoid despotism. Scholars believe that Venice was regarded in the seventeenth century as an example of the mixed form of government so highly praised by the classical authors: Venice became a model because monarchy, aristocracy and democracy were happily mixed. Many studies have been published on the significance of Venice in the age of the Counter-Reformation. Recently Eco O.G. Haitsma Mulier has published an ex cellent book on The Myth of Venice and Dutch Republican Thought in the Seventeenth Centur/; but during the seventeenth century the Dutch Republic was also considered a new form of government, and became a political model in Europe. In my Jdeological History ofEurope a chapter is dedicated to the Dutch modd. Althusius in his Politica methodice digesta had in mind the government of the Netheriands; the preface of the third edition, of 1614, is addressed to the 'ordines Frisiae': the allied provinces went to war against the King of Spain in order to liberate themselves from foreign domination, and in these provinces 'jura per tinere ad consociatam moltitudinem et populum singularum provinciarum'; Althusius admits that in his book the 'exempla quoque desumpta a vobis, ad ur bibus, constitutionibus, moribus, rebus gestis vestris et confoederatarum aliarum provinciarum Belgarum'.

  • Calendar of Seventeenth- and Eighteenth- Century Documents at the Archives of the Irish College, Rome2 (With Index)
Vera Orschel with John J. Hanly1 Calendar of seventeenth- and eighteenth- century documents at the archives of the Irish College, Rome2 (with index) General introduction This is a calendar of documents concerning the seventeenth- and eighteenth- century administrations of the Irish College in Rome, contained in a series of 27 bound and unbound volumes, and in some folders with loose material at the College archives. Of the original 28 volumes, 26 remain there, one is lost, and another was only recently located at the Archives of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples (hereafter Propaganda Fide). This introduction is followed by a list of the volumes, a calendar of the volumes and loose leaves and two appendices, the fi rst containing material already printed in Spicilegium Ossoriense and the second containing docu- ments with complementary content at the archives of Propaganda Fide. The documents under examination date more precisely to the period 1628–1798, that is the period from the foundation of the College until its closure by the French Republic of Rome.3 Although they are sometimes referred to as ‘the Jesuit documents’, the Jesuit administration of the Irish College does not fully coincide with these years: Luke Wadding, head of the Irish Franciscan community in Rome (founded 1625) and co-founder of this (diocesan) College, remained its administrator until College man- agement passed to the Society of Jesus, in execution of a clause in the will of the College’s other founder and fi nancial patron, Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi, who died in 1632.4 His will was contested by the Franciscans but in 1635 the court of the Sacra Rota found in favour of the Jesuits, who then managed College affairs until 1772.

  • La Guerra En El Noreste . Alexander Farnese and Francisco Verdugo
TIEMPOS MODERNOS 35 (2017/2) ISSN:1699-7778 Alexander Farnese and Francisco Verdugo… Raymond Fagel Alejandro Farnesio y Francisco Verdugo: la Guerra en el Noreste. Alexander Farnese and Francisco Verdugo: the War in the North East. Abstract: The comments of Spanish colonel Francisco Verdugo reflect his difficult position as governor of the royal possessions in the North East of the Low Countries between 1581 and 1594. The colonel was held responsible for the loss of most of his territory in the war against prince Maurits of Nassau, and the Comments constitute the defence of his actions. Here we encounter not the dominant history of Alexander Farnese and his victories in Brabant and Flanders, but the failure of Farnese to support his governor in the North East of the Low Countries. Keywords: The Dutch Revolt, Francisco Verdugo, Alexander Farnese, Military History, 16th century, Ego Document Artículo recibido el 20 de febrero de 2017.
