Malouf’s ‘Seven Last Words’ are playful variations on the short Latin poem attributed to Hadrian, ‘Animula vagula blandula,’ in which the Emperor, dying in his body, speaks to his departing soul. Malouf adopts the tender, questioning tone of the original, a poem already loved by translators, from Donne and Pope to Marguerite Yourcenar, while stretching it further, through multiple adaptations. Malouf’s second variation is the closest to the original Latin, the most faithful, you might say, in a work that is partly about the departure of a ‘lifelong companion,’ the ending of a relationship (2.2). -

He was the first general manager of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and for many years has maintained a close association with the orchestra. Prior to that he was commercial manager of the Australian Opera. More recently he was general manager of the Song Company until 2009. He originally trained as an accountant with Price Waterhouse, where he worked in Australia and overseas until his passion for music seduced him into the professional music scene. Since that time, in addition to his executive appointments, he has worked as director or consultant to many arts organisations including the Australian Ballet, Melbourne Theatre Company, Lyric Opera of Queensland, Musica Viva, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust. He has been a leader in establishing philanthropy, corporate sponsor- ship and strategic planning in the arts in Australia, publishing several books in this field, notably 101 Good Ideas for Assisting the Arts. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2008 for his services to the arts. -

Our pro- gramme contrasts works expressing darkness, grief and horror with compositions of a much lighter character. In the for- mer category, Michael Berkeley’s Coronach, evoking a High- land lament, and Lutos lawski’s Funeral Music in memory of Bart´ok; also, the opening titles from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Psycho, the music written by Bernard Herrmann. In a gen- tler vein, we present Irish composer Joan Trimble’s enchanting Suite for Strings, and Graeme Koehne’s (mostly) light–hearted Divertissement. To complete the programme, we are delighted to welcome back leading Sydney trombonist Greg van der Struik for his third appearance as soloist and composer with Bourbaki. We are sure that you will enjoy the varied moods of Greg’s recently written concerto. There will be two further Bourbaki concerts this year. The next, to be given on Sunday 5 August, will be another pro- gramme of contrasts: music by P¯eteris Vasks and Betty Beath conveying the suffering of war is juxtaposed with works by Carl St. Jacques (a member of the Bourbaki Ensemble) and Arvo P¨art praying for peace. We hope to be joined by a choir for the P¨art piece – watch this space. -

At the time of his birth, White was heir to half the family property, ‘Belltrees’, in Scone. On returning to Australia from London in 1912, White’s parents decided to move to Sydney, as Ruth disliked the social scene in the Hunter and Dick had developed interests in horse racing that required him to spend more time in the city. Despite White’s brief association with the property, ‘Belltrees’ was one of many childhood landscapes that he recreated in his writing.
