Houghton Winemaker - Troy Overstone

I grew up in the Cowaramup, Margaret River and Busselton area in Southwest WA. Although having a family background in the wine industry through Woody Nook Wines in Margaret River which my Grandparents and Uncle started. I did not become interested in wine until I spent 7 months living in the Loire region in France when I was 21. In particular an epiphany moment during a dinner in country France. It was at a good local restaurant in a little village. I think the meal was Chateaubriand and the wine Bordeaux (Paulliac) but I just remember the amazing flavours of the wine with the food and I never thought of wine in the same way.

After a few years of travelling and casual work I decided to enroll in the Bachelor of Science: Viticulture and Oenology degree at Curtin University, which I completed.

Since then I have completed vintages in Margaret River & Swan Valley in . Clare Valley in South Australia and in the Alentejo region in south-central Portugal.

I have been a winemaker at Houghton Swan Valley since 2009. Fortunately in my position at Houghton Wines, I get to see fruit from all over Western Australia, including the Swan Districts, Geographe, Margaret River, Pemberton and Great Southern regions.

In 2012 I attended the Advanced Wine Assessment Course in Adelaide. I have been a senior judge at the Wine Show of Western Australia in Mount Barker. I have been associated judge at Royal Wine Show, Royal Queensland Wine Show, Wine Show of Western Australia and Geographe Wine Show. In the past I was also on the judging panel for Scoop Magazine.

Due to my place of work I have a particular affection for premium and . I have a weakness for White Burgundy and a love of Barolo and the Piedmont region of Italy. Then of course there is and Shiraz… The diversity of wine is truly great.

Outside of work and wine I’m keen on all types of food and music and am also a passionate West Coast Eagles & Tottenham Hotspur fan.
